    Definition of Sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others. Cheerleading involves "physical exertion" and Cheerleaders compete...therefore Cheerleading is a sport.

    In my high school we had a disabled (since birth) cheerleader that could shout cheers with such energy and enthusiasm. At the tryouts many girls performed minimal athleticism to enhance their performance. When the wheelchair auditionee took the stage, she belted out those cheers with such force that the judges selected her to be on the squad. Its sad that if she were to audition today, she would not make the squad. Its not a required element to do acrobatics in order to be a true CHEERLEADER.

    Agreed. You also need the proper equipment, coaches and physical strength/flexibility. Cheerleading has come a long way since waving around pom-poms and merely looking pretty. Soon (if not already) there will be elements of martial arts while stunting. Its amazing what has been accomplished so far.

    Cheerleading is definitely a sport. These girls are being thrown into the air, above people's heads. If one person was a tiny bit off, that flyer could die. Cheer is not a joke about a slutty group of girls, squealing for football players. It was voted the most dangerous contact sport in the world, thank you very much. Cheer is hardcore work. If you don't think it's a sport, try flying for a day and see if you survive the sweat and the workout.

    Semi Correct. It is Stunts & Tumbling. The new college organization is NCATA (National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Assoc. Yes they are striving to have full acceptance as an NCAA womans sport . Will take a while but it will happen. Have been in contact with NCATA since the beginning two years ago to begin to bring their system further down into the youth organizations because they are using a more sportive, better developmentaly designed format for athlete progress.

    Aug: 2012 "The appeals court agreed with U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill, ...who found in 2010 that competitive cheerleading did not have the organization, post-season structure or standardized rules required to be considered a sport." ...."The activity also must have competition as its primary goal - not merely the support of other athletic teams."

  • @coachgeo
    @coachgeo Před 12 lety

    Agreed, Ya'll work hard and deserve respect. Just like Acrobats, & dancers etc. deserve way more respect than they get. You don't need to be part of a "sport" to get respect though. That being said.... as a trained professional in acrobatic sports... you'll get tons more respect when cheer follows the logical training/competition path of every other acrobatic sport in the world. (Diving, Martial Arts, All 7 of the gymnastic sports, Ice dancing and so on) Your the only one who does not.

  • @coachgeo
    @coachgeo Před 12 lety

    They go to "events" that are masked as "competition" but they are not. They are BIG BUSINESS to make big profits. The rules ensure that rarely anyone leaves with much less than third place cause that is bad for business. This is NOT sportive in nature. This is huge reason why a federal judge ruled it not a sport.

    Understand ones desire to hold to an opinion. Remember an opinion is only as worthy as the information its derived from. If ones opinion is based on info. derived from a con man; then that opinion has no validity. If an opinion is based on science, historical facts, analytical analysis.. that is a different matter.

  • @Amy107127
    @Amy107127 Před 12 lety

    Even if cheerleading isn't an official sport, it's definitely just as difficult as most "official" sports! Sure it's not entirely as hard as gymnastics but it's at the same intensity level as a lot of official sports. It's really a lot harder than you would think. Cheerleaders respect athletes that compete in different sports, and it should be vice versa.

    “Like the district court, we acknowledge record evidence showing that competitive cheerleading can be physically challenging, requiring competitors to possess ‘strength, agility, and grace,’ the court wrote. “Similarly, we do not foreclose the possibility that the activity, with better organization and defined rules, might someday warrant recognition as a ...sport. But, like the district court, we conclude that the record evidence shows that ‘that time has not yet arrived.’”

    @SilfraGirl Před 12 lety

    Cheer is a sport.
    Whoever disagrees, will be pepper sprayed.
    I do cheer, and its a tough sport!
    We have to stunt, and stay tight, while being flexible! And tumbling, and a whole lot of trust.
    Even ppl who have done it for years, still can't do a backhand spring! Its hard,
    And i love every second of it.
    Half the ppl who say it isnt a sport,
    Cant even do a cartwheel.
    So try it yourself, because you wont make it through a single practice.

  • @coachgeo
    @coachgeo Před 12 lety

    No argument here, 100% agree. You deserve more credit. Dancers deserve more credit. IMHO ball sport athletes get too MUCH CREDIT. You will get more credit than you have now if the cheer organizations followed logical training/competitive formats (compulsory/ & Optional levels ) like every other acrobaticy sport in THE WORLD uses. (Martial Arts, All 7 of the Gymnastic sports, Diving, Ice Dancing ...). Cheer will get more credit, will be WAY safer, Skill level will rise.

    Most cheerleading (that people see) is in high school- when they do no cool tricks, they just shout out cheers for the football team from the sidelines in skimpy clothing with fake smile. That doesn't deserve my respect.

    Cheerleading is a sport. No one argues that gymnastics, figure skating, diving, etc. are not sports; but like cheerleading, the scores are decided by judges who base their decisions on a point system. Yes, the average high school sideline team sucks. But when I watch my brother's middle school basketball team, I don't think to myself, "wow, this isn't a sport!" simply because his team sucks. There's just an understanding that basketball is a hard sport, and that most people aren't good at it.

  • @abiedwards1
    @abiedwards1 Před 12 lety

    fair point, but cheerleading has quite clearly evolved from that. You can't deny that cheerleaders put in a lot of training and practice into each routine and training for the tricks, as do any other athletes like gymnasts and footballers. So to not class it as a sport even though the same amount of commitment and effort goes into it like training hours etc.. wouldn't be fair.

    Cheer? its a sport.
    We jump, we run, we fall, we LIFT people, and we run some more.
    We get less water breaks than any other sport.
    we are more than likely to get a broken neck from falling out of someones arms, like that.
    we spend hours dedicated to something we love.
    You don't spend a few hours everyday trying to get as flexible as Gabi Butler.
    You don't lift girls up in the air. YOU dont get pulled because you can't do a back handspring.
