So a little background about the Benzino beef. It goes all the way back to about 2000, 2001 - I apologize, this is going to turn into a long post. But you seem legit interested, so it's worth typing up. You look like a younger guy, so this might have been a little before your time - so my apologies if you already know some of this. Back when Em was coming up and prior to that, there was a huge rap magazine called The Source, and back then, it was basically considered the gospel for hip-hop. What basically every unsigned, underground artist wanted, was to make The Source's "Unsigned Hype" page. That solidified you as a legit player in the game, and I believe most people that made that page, ended up getting signed because everyone who was a "somebody" paid attention to it. And when they rated albums, that was considered gospel too. If they said something was 5 stars, you knew it was unquestionably a great record. Anyway, Em made the Unsigned Hype page, then a couple years later ended up signing with Dre. When Em's first album came out, The Source gave it a low rating - despite it being considered one of the best rap records of all time. They did the same with his next album. Now, to give you some context of just how big Em was at the time, I don't think younger cats really appreciate it... Kendrick Lamar's last record sold 285,000 "album equivalents" in the first week, and only 35,000 of those were actual hard copy sales. Em's 2nd album (Marshal Mathers LP) sold 1,780,000 in the first week - this was before streaming was a thing, those were all hard copy sales. So for people to be buying a record like that, and this "credible" magazine to be giving it weak reviews, Em took offense. And I think he dropped Benzino's name or some subliminal disses in a couple songs. After that, Benzino released a couple diss tracks, used The Source to try and attack and discredit Eminem, and actually released an issue with old audio recordings of Em, when Em was a teenager, using the N-word in a freestyle after a bad breakup with a black chick (yeah, hard 'R'). Practically every black artist who was important defended Eminem. It was so bad, that Benzino was eventually released from The Source and his career (if you can say he ever had one) withered and died. This record was released in the middle of all that. Oh, and Eminem actually released a song on his Encore album, talking about that audio and apologizing. it was called "Yellow Brick Road," and is a DOPE song in its own right. It gives a little background on what was going on when he said it, etc.
