Mount Zalogo, at the height of 786m, is located east of the village of Kamarina of the municipality of Preveza, two kilometres away.
On the 15th of December 1803, Souliotes were defeated by Ali Pasha and forced to leave their homeland. They started separated into three groups. The group (A) made up of 800 Souliotes, headed for Parga, stood in the Zalongo to rest in 16 December 1803.
In 18 December 1803, a group under Kitsos Botsaris, father of Marcus Botsaris, managed to break the siren and escape with 147 men to Parga. Those who remained were captured, while a group of women and children fled to the edge of the steep cliff. In order not to fall into the hands of the Turks, 57-63 women (different information as to the number- a monograph of a Zalongo Monk writes 300 Souliotes) with their children fell off the cliff and killed themselves.
The Zalog Memorial was designed by the sculptor George Zogolopoulos. The opening took place in the 11th of June 1961, in the presence of King Paul, Queen Frederica, the citizens of the whole metropolitan area of the continent and other officials. The steps up to the monument are 410 and they need twenty minutes up and ten-15 minutes down.
