- On our way from Iowa to Maryland, about 400 miles from the border... we got stopped by the police. 26,000 lbs, 70 feet long, 12.5 feet tall, and 11.5 feet wide. They got us. I have brought back to northern Ohio, boats from Maryland and Iowa. Iowa was a big boy like yours, but, I just spend a few hundred dollars with a permitting service and they took care of it. As someone else commented, they don’t like wide loads at night. I was waiting for the hills when you hit W.V. It seemed like I crawled up those things for EVER!
All of my boating boondoggles were well worth the adventure. Remember you’ll forget about the boat, but you’ll never forget the trip.
That boat is super heavy, surprised you attempted it with just a 2500, but maybe for a one time trip only. Glad to see your Dad doing projects with you. That support is probably why a young man like you has the confidence to do the projects you do. No permits is a newbee mistake, but you don't try to hide your embarrassment or disappointment. That's some nice honesty.
Boat weighs about 14,000 lbs. The truck is set up for it with air bags, tune, cooling, braking, goose neck etc. Only wish I could’ve used the dually the rest of the way with the 4.10 rear axle. That makes a huge difference.
You’re spot on! Wouldn’t be doing this stuff if it weren’t for my dad and grandpa. Love it even when I hate it. I try to shoot things straight on the channel but hey everyone has their opinion. We’re just having some fun and documenting my projects for many years to come!

Welcome to my world. The CDL world. Been a trucker fur over 20 years. And FYI, Ohio hates truckers sense many moons ago an Ohio governor or senators child was killed in an accident involving a semi.
So that state sense doesn't mess around and will stop anything at any time to check that you are in compliance. It's the toughest state in regards to violations.

Yall are so lucky to get rain. In texas were in a crazy drought. Like 2-3 months w/o rain. Also 110 degree heat. It’s insane
that odyssey takes guts to even consider. People that have never towed anything heavy or massive won't get it until they do it themselves. I used to tow a massive trailer with huge whitewater rafts stacked to the moon on a daily basis in Moab. The tow vehicle was an antique school bus with dozens of people on board and no trailer brakes. The stopping distance was measured in miles not feet.
No kidding that’s wild. It takes guts like you said. End of the day, safety trumps all. I would do it again but on my terms and taking my time.
11' beam is pretty cheeky. Seems like you can get away with a lot when it comes to length but... anyone with eyes can tell when you've only got 6" on either side of 12' wide interstate lane.
Dude, I crap my pants towing a 20’ pontoon a few miles. I have so much respect for you towing that boat as far as you did. I’m just wondering if it would have been better to pay a service to tow and avoid the wear and tear on your truck plus the time and hassle with getting permits.

That is the funniest looking aluminum trailer I have ever seen, looks galvanized.
Goose neck portion is galvanized steel. So are the axles. The rest is aluminum I beam.

Usually forgiveness over permission has always worked for me although tough to recommend ha. Sucks man sorry bout that. Here in the south it’s a little more lax
Also pulled that Cabelas exit hill many times in a tour bus and heavy trailer very slowly

Check engine light on,12mpg I got 14 on my Ram With my Banks Setup towing 11,500 in LA traffic to central California..
Any load over 8'6" is an oversized load. The permits would have been cheaper to pull the boat to Maryland. Daylight hours only. Driving at night is what got you shut down. It is mainly for the safety of the motoring public. Pulling a boat like that in Missouri just for maintenance requires a permit.
Ohio is ruff.
I was thinking about towing a 15K lb Scarab for 2000 miles to my home turf. 9.5' beam, so also oversized. My wife talked me out of it. The permits are a royal PIA. You also have to know your rig very well for a tow like that. I'm glad you made it.
Did you stop at all the weigh stations or just pass them by?
You’d be able to get by with 9.5’. A lot of manufacturers hit that width for trailerable boats. I know technically it’s over width but most people just go with it without having any trouble legally.
I passed them all because they were all closed! Haha

Absolute banger. Hey Ben, I am planning on towing a sea Ray pachanga 22 from Indy to Austin. What rental company do you recommend using? Any direction is greatly appreciated.
We used Enterprise but got super lucky! I was on a list to reserved a 3500 for months. I got the last one. Worst part is that you HAVE to return it to the same location you rented it from. All and all not too expensive. The idea was to keep the miles off my truck but I ended up having to use mine anyway. Oh well

What kind of trailer is that? I have a 2002 360 Dancer that I would like to pull at the beginning of the boating season and end of it to store in my pole barn.
It is a 45’ aluminum gooseneck boat trailer. Weighs less than 3000 lbs and has hydraulic electric brakes. It pulls like a dream.

I loved that boat too. I sold it to buy the Sea Ray Project. Speed boats are a blast but I love the space of the sea ray
Anything over 102 inches wide (8ft 6in) wide needs wide load permitting

The moment I saw the weight and size of that boat, trailer and tow vehicle it was obvious that was a hazard to everyone on the road. And I did not need a police officer to tell me.

I’m a freight broker and I’m glad you’re educating folks about permits and proper insurance.
I’m of the opinion that it’s not worth risking the fines or worse yet the insurance debacle as typical insurance won’t cover an oversized load if you were to get in a wreck.
Swift trucks are always slow.
Has a truck driver I did over everything and yes you need a permit sorry but have fun.
Take it to court, city police do not have jurisdiction on interstates.

This is not the case. State Highway Patrol, County Sheriffs, and City Police all have jurisdiction on interstate highways in Ohio.
I’m from Ohio. Ohio Stateys and generally most police departments in Ohio are known to be TERRIBLE to truckers. You may have been in violation, but it should be one of those things they let slide. Total cash grab on their part. I have NO RESPECT for Ohio State Troopers specifically. Met a couple in my life (not by being pulled over) and they are total tool bags. Shame on my home state of Ohio, I’m so annoyed by this.
So let me get this straight. You are calling the State Police POS for doing their job and enforcing the law instead of 'letting it slide'? It seems you're the one with the problem. The law is the law, everybody needs to follow it, including you. If you don't, then I'm glad the cops get you, that's what my tax dollars are paying for. I also tow a big ass boat around. Instead of being a POS and trying to cheat the law, I got the permit and I properly placard the tow vehicle which is legally sized for the load I'm pulling. In this video, if the gross weight of the boat and trailer is 26,000#, pretty sure he's overweight as well. It's not about the ability for the truck to pull the weight, it's about the truck's ability to STOP the weight.
Great job officers, ppl are selling crack and shooting it out like the wild wild west but do not tow a big boat!! Thats where the long arm of the law draws the line, gangbanging ok, boating not ok. When i had my own construction company the dot officers and state troopers absolutely tortured anyone with a commercial vehicle and just wrote as many tickets for as much $$ as they could every day. Sorry it was such a big setback for you but its a learning experience and hopefully this sheds light on good ppl being harassed by the law for $$$ while crime is completely out of control. I wish you filmed the entire situation being pulled over and harassed, it would have gotten a whole lot of views.

Here's an idea, how about complying with the law instead of complaining about the police doing their jobs? Guess what? I also pull a giant ass boat 3 times every year and, I know it's hard to believe, I've never been stopped a single time because unlike this guy, I got the proper permits, have the correct signs and flags, I'm not overweight, and I don't move it during times that are prohibited... IE I follow the law! Amazing how that works, don't flagrantly violate the law and the police don't bother you. Seems to work better than ignoring the law then bitching about it when you get caught....
It's not worth the overweight fees either.
You might have gotten away with it if you would have put the signs and flags on it, though driving at night with an oversize is a no-no.. You sound like you're mad that you got caught, knowing full well you needed permits...
Edit this video ASAP. When you are talking about your truck and how you have A D and A T and A and your gas mileage you're gonna get yourself in more trouble. The afterburger stuff you did
It’s a 2013 and grandfathered in. No worries.
Actually a 18 wheeler trailer is 102 inches.. not 8.5 feet, I drive one all over the country.. and that tractor is a swift, second worst company on the highway, but they're so slow because they're hauling 40k pound loads. Look at what your truck is doing on a hill with light weight
