Toymaker can discard and cheat a vehicle online, Icatian Crier can make crewmates, while it's not a spellshaper Cryptbreaker discards cards, makes bodies, and draws cards later. Also, Zombie Infestation, crazy good in the deck. 2/2 body and dump a vehicle in the yard.

    btw, to combo with Tatsunari/Kermit, you can use Broken Fall/molting skin + 2 enchantment discount effects, and then phyrexian altar. It seems janky, until you consider that cost reducers are generally useful, broken fall/molting skin are protection pieces that bounce themselves for free, and can draw you through your deck for 1 mana (once you get the engine going) until you hit your altar, and then you can combo out of nowhere! I use a similar thing in Sythis, and it's bonkers how easily it just combos off.

    I also just had my first game with the gruul precon commander, though I chose Kaima, who I also feel is overlooked. I got to do some pretty sweet things and even ended up winning the game.
    An opponent was playing Akroma, angel of fury as their commander, and managed to turbo them out turn 3 with the help of sol ring and treasonous ogre. I got a vow on it and avoided ever taking damage from it, then got to try out a card I've always wanted to play, elemental resonance, and began gaining 8 mana a turn from Akroma. I then managed to pull out my commander and get a big smoke spirit's blessing off goading everyone's boards and growing Kaima. It was about as powerful of a start as I think he deck could have gotten. By the time I started playing my licid cards, they were already pretty irrelevant, but I did manage to swing with them as inefficient bears and close out the game, so yeah, go licids!

Seth playing 2c and not having any on the filed was ridiculous for me but maybe I have been Burt out by back to basics and blood moon too many times. Ruination is also a situational card so I definitely is not as strong as Armageddon. With just one mono opponent it becomes very risky. Great game. Glad to see Tomer finally win a game.

    I'm happy to see ruination showing up. I don't think it's comparable to armageddon at all. The real conversation you all should have is the actual value of excessive nonbasics vs basic lands. I'm showing my age here but the original design of mtg intended for nonbasic lands to always have a drawback. Reading the textbox on the original duals even reiterates that. The first third of magic's lifespan has had cards dedicated to specific land hate and against nonbasics. I know mostly casual players complaining has mad that trend fade out, but it's good to remind people that running mass non-basics absolutely can have a drawback.

    • @jlbrooks74
      @jlbrooks74 Před 2 lety +1

      MLD in all forms is just poor play imo. Land destruction for greedy lands that do a ton for the deck (e.g. gaea's cradle, cabal coffers, etc.)? Sure. Blow it up.
      Playing multiple colors will always have the inherent drawback of having to balance the lands you tap for the spells you cast to make sure you can still afford to do the next thing you plan for. A lot tougher than a single color (or dual color) deck will have to. Running lands that tap for more than one color give you a shot at actually casting the spells in your hand and running more than two colors is already a dance in that regard.
      The first third of magic's existence did have tons of land hate and specific color hate, but the first third of magic's existence did not include commander. Wizards has printed a LOT less color hate in recent years and has scaled back the MLD considerably as well. Why? In multi player formats (which have grown in popularity), it is generally agreed that color specific hate and mass land removal just kinda sucks and isn't that fun to play against.
      The format ruination was made for was not commander. Ruination and armageddon effects were around long before commander was and it was aimed at competitive formats. Ruination in a two player format doesn't do a whole lot. Ruination in a 2020+ era commander game might as well be an armageddon and that is often a game stall of the worst kind.
      People talk very differently about the things they see others do (as long as it's not against them) and also cheer on things they claim they would or actually do themselves. Want to play MLD? Go for it. The first game you cast it will be logged in the memory of those you snuck it out on and the fallout as a result will be yours to repair.

    • @scaredycat3146
      @scaredycat3146 Před 2 lety

      @@jlbrooks74 "Playing multiple colors will always have the inherent drawback of having to balance the lands you tap"
      I believe that's the point, excuse the joke but, literally being Magic as Richard Garfield intended.
      Finding a balance between speed (tapped, etc), versatility (colours), and cost (life/mana in-game, $$ outside) is an important part of deck building/choice.
      While not everyone agrees, deck building is part of the game, and the designers have said this in the past.
      Having every deck be 4-5 colours just so they can play the best cards in each colour isn't good, or fun for all players.
      The designers don't want "Playing more colours is strictly better" to be true regardless of the theme.
      An example of designing for this recently was a land Seth played right at the end, War Room, as well as Commander's Plate, which each reward you for playing less colours.
      Consider watching Gavin Verhey's videos, a while back he did a video on design mistakes where he mentioned Najeela, the Blade-Blossom was a mistake.
      They can't print a better Warrior commander easily, because she has high speed, and versatility (all warriors ever printed, or to be printed are options), as well as a low cost.
      There's also the fact that she is both an engine and payoff wrapped into one, but that's a different conversation.

    • @jlbrooks74
      @jlbrooks74 Před 2 lety

      @@jetshark8308 I didn't read a joke there but ok.
      "Having every deck be 4-5 colours just so they can play the best cards in each colour isn't good, or fun for all players." The problem isn't the access to all the best cards in each color because you still need to have the right mana to cast said cards. Dropping a tropical island on the field doesn't help a player cast argueably the best removal in the format, swords to plowshares or path to exile. Nor does that tropical island let you cast the best tutors in vampiric or demonic.
      My argument is not against nor for playing 4-5 color decks (although I do agree that the commander should have all the colors in its identity in it's casting cost when it comes to 4+ colors and no more of this generic 5c good stuff like golos, najeela, codie). My argument is against applauding mass land destruction even those like the Ruination specifically used in this game and saying that it's "ok" because it punishes non basic land players for "greedy" mana bases. The term greedy mana base is a laugh in itself unless it is considered greedy to want to have the colors needed to cast spells in hand and actually participate in the game.
      If we're talking competitive..sure, MLD and your opponents will likely counter it if they can or just continue to play the best they can because cedh is no holds barred, go for the win. If we're talking casual, why in the world do you want to make it so your opponents who are on multi color decks can't do anything other than sit there and hope the basic they need turns up on the top of their deck? I suspect that most people enjoy the games where each player gets to interact, cast stuff and do stuff. I don't know about you, but I don't really care for games where one person has to sit there and constantly pass because they aren't drawing a land (or in this case the correct colored land) so they can engage in the game.
      Deck construction IS part of the game and there is no way you are going to play a 5 color deck and run mostly basics unless you just plan to sit there and hope you get lucky enough to draw the mana ramp spells you need to fetch up the basic you need for your upcoming spells...AND have the basic land to cast that ramp spell already available. Oh wait, mana rocks right? You bet, draw the rock and keep your fingers crossed that it's the right talisman/signet for the hand you have now.
      Again, people love to come here and cheer on MLD plays because it sounds good in theory. Those same people will mutter under their breath if they were to be playing in a pod and some MLD play nukes their entire land base (or close to it) and the entire table has the joy of starting their already long ass game all over again with one land drop at a time when they are fortunate enough to top deck one.

    • @DominoAmor
      @DominoAmor Před 2 lety

      @@jlbrooks74 being that I've played with my main commander pod for around a decade and also at my local shop for 8 years till covid, and I'm absolutely not the only person that runs mld, it's difficult to understand your threat of "oh I'll remember this." A commander pod or group tends to evolve with each player adapting to what the others are bringing to the table. It's not instantaneous, but it always happens, otherwise that one person doing that one unchecked thing always wins. When a player who has 3+ color deck built around mass basics that might randomly resolve a ruination or back-to- basics at an opportune time and steals the game, is that not the same as some other strategy being abused? If your friends all keep bringing out graveyard decks, do you just ignore graveyard interaction and hope for the best?

Meanwhile Richard and Phil are durdling and holding back cards. I also know Phil decks just take over games if he's allowed to cast his giant spells. If Seth and I go after each other then we'll just kill ourselves and hand the game to Richard / Phil. By attacking Phil and Richard we're forcing them to stop durdling and start spending their resources responding instead, which is exactly what happens. You even see that Phil is 1 life away from being able to cast Omniscience at the end there, which in most cases is just GG.

    Not going to lie, usually way less invested in any of the 'most recent set' episodes, but new Kamigawa is amazing. They managed to have both flavour and Commanders that are of an interesting power level.
    I will say, Richard seems to run less 'overwhelming value engine' cards and more 'good over time' cards, if Arena is any kind of guide.
    7th ed art is really hit or miss, with many shots being taken while facing in the opposite direction of the target, creating the least loved art style magic ever had. I bought a 7th ed Starter with a bunch of 'okay at the time' cards, which are mostly unplayable, with most of the played cards from it being Forests. Anyways, I despise my two Llanowar Elves from it, and there was much worse art. At least Portal had great art, even if most of the cards are pure derp (I wasn't sure if I'd use them or not, so I bought some sorcery speed Edicts from Portal, which I sure enough never used iirc), 7th ed has a mix of terrible cards, the derpiest art on average and it's white border to boot, so you either love it or you hate it.
    I use Parhelion II as a finisher in my Tobias Andrion deck, where it is probably the most on theme card in the deck, a clunky AF card that works with the Commander to make tokens. There aren't that many great vehicles with Crew 3 or 4, but there might be something in Kamigawa, who knows? Right now it's Parhelion, Conquerer's Galleon and Sky Sovereign, all of which feel pretty good to surprise people by actually casting Tobias and using him to crew, I can only hope I have a Stubborn Denial to stop the inevitable answer.
    Black has a ton of 'everyone discards a card on ____ phase' enchantments and some creatures you could run Seth, they also annoy the crap out of your opponents. Necrogen Mists is probably about the best way to have a guaranteed discard outlet each upkeep that also *might* hurt your opponents.
    "I have a combo, but it's a bit janky." "What's in it?" "Well, Omniscience, Phyrexian Altar, Whip Silk, my Commander, and Rancor." Good gravy, if you assemble just the first half of that you'd better win or you're going to get targeted. I feel like this might be easier to assemble than it looks, Sultai is really good at tutoring for things, and can even Transmute to find stuff. Transmute isn't a top tier ability, but it plays well if some lunatic is running Rule of Law.
    Rakdos is pretty good at answering a board full of creatures, there are a ton of good, playable wipes in these colours. I'm trying out Phyrexian Tribute atm, looks neat if not crazy very often without serious life loss.

    I do really like a couple of the Neon Dynasty alt art lands (plains 293 & mountain 299) but recently it does seem like the artwork on many lands is becoming very far removed from the land that the artwork is supposed to represent. Neon Dynasty plains 294 and mountain 300 seem more like towns than land - seems like they should be utility lands, maybe more like Mishra’s Factory than a basic land (same with swamp 298); the lands from New Capenna are all buildings. The artwork is all really nice, but some just don’t seem to represent their function.

    It's kinda hilarious that the crew is afraid of Phil going infinite with Tatsunari, except the only ways to go infinite with it require like 4 or 5 other combo pieces, AND something else to actually win the game once you go infinite. I feel bad for Phil sometimes because he clearly isn't used to having to defend his plays lol

      Yeah his decks normally pop off so crazy so now the crew has a healthy/unhealthy fear and respect for his decks/play style. He's kind of the new Tomer at times just ruthlessly getting murdered lol.

    Loved this game. Nice work. It bothered me a lot that Richard kept saying Rakdos doesn’t have answers when it is actually HIS deck the one that doesn’t. RB is great at killing creatures, artifacts and has mass removal for both. Enchantments? Well if they are auras like in this game and they don’t have creatures… in this case I think it is a flaw on deckbuilding and not on the color combination. But the Boompile movement was really cool so all is well 😂

    Chishiro is way better with auras because of aura ramp. I was impressed that is a strong commander.

    Ruination if your mana base is build right, probably only cuts half your lands off and also is being played with a boardstate that can kill people. Cant really call that a bad card to play in the moment, diversify your mana base just like you diversify your board state/ramp.

    Major props to Tomer for playing Ruination to punish the greedy mana bases. If the playgroup thinks Ruination is a little too mean, you could try playing 'From the Ashes' and 'Wave of Vitriol' as less brutal versions of the effect.
