    I’m an air traffic controller in Atlanta. Not in the tower, though - I’m a radar controller in a different place. It is the best job I’ve ever had. I have my days like everyone else. Shift work certainly isn’t fun and I’ve certainly missed my fair share of Saturday nights & holidays over the years. But it is meaningful work that also ends at the end of your shift and that is one of the best parts. I’m not taking a bag home full of work and I’m not answering my phone unless I want to. I do my job, I get in my car, and I watch work get smaller in my rear view mirror.

    Just had a connecting flight from Jacksonville (FL) to Denver (CO),(May 29). Had about 40 minutes to get off in Terminal A and get on next plane in Terminal T. We Took the train. It ran very smoothy. They had already started the boarding process. We made the flight and our bags were tagged with a Rapid Transfer tag attached to the flight # tag. Everything worked very well and I have to say after watching this video on Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport I am very impressed. They may be the World's Busiest Airport, but every time I have flown thru the airport I have never lost a bag or that it did not make its connection. Great Work by all the men and women who work there to make sure we all get where we are going safely. I for one am a very happy and satisfied customer.
    I love Delta and wish that Denver Intl Airport was a hub for them. We prefer them over any other domestic carrier. Keep up the great work. The behind the scenes video was just fascinating to see how they are able to keep everything on schedule is just amazing.

    I’ve been through Atlanta airport many many times without incident. It’s a very well-designed airport with five runways as opposed to JFK with only two, it’s terminals are connected via subway and walkway, I have no issues whatsoever with Atlanta airport. The only issue is Delta may put me on an arriving gate B1 and a connecting gate on E 17 with a short connect connection time but that’s the only issue I see. I used to fly from San Diego to Baltimore via Atlanta monthly and never had an issue issue.

    I question the strategy of sending so many connecting passengers and flights through one airport when Delta has other major hub airports (Minneapolis, Detroit, Salt Lake City, etc.) that can handle large numbers of passengers and flights. Many people who have connected in Atlanta tell me that it’s too overcrowded even with the large number of terminal concourses and runways. I much prefer Detroit or Minneapolis - less crowded at both! (I’ve flown through them.)

    • @NGAvgeek

      Atlanta is a much better candidate for a hub for both of those airports especially in the winter when it gets cold up north. Plus without delta Atlanta wouldn’t be anything so they get multiple benefits at the airport other airlines wouldn’t have.

    • @ssmt2
      @ssmt2 Před 23 dny

      I work on the conveyor systems for one of the major airlines so if this ends up being a bit long winded, I apologize.
      The luggage tags that you put on your bag get laser scanned and entered into the baggage control computer. That happens when you initially check your bags. Once it is placed on the conveyor it will go through the x-ray systems and then to a bag tag reader (that is a laser scanner that reads your tag again). From there on out the computer knows where the bag is on the conveyor system by using a combination of photo eyes and tachometer encoders. Each individual section of the conveyor will have a photo eye, and a reflector, mounted on it , as well as a tach encoder. The tach encoders are mounted on a belt roller shaft. They tell the computer how fast the belt is running in feet per minute (Meters per minute in metric countries). The photo eye and reflector are mounted opposite each other on the outside of the side panels of each conveyor section.
      There are holes in the left and right hand side panels about an inch up from the conveyor belt. One of the holes will have the photo eye mounted such that it will shoot a beam of light across the conveyor belt to a reflector plate that is mounted over the opposite hole. When the bag interrupts the light beam it sends a signal to the computer letting it know that a bag just went by. That starts a timer. Because the computer knows how fast the belt is traveling it will also know when the bag is supposed to go by the next photo eye and reflector. It does this for every section of the conveyor belt.
      The short belts will only have a single photo eye setup. The long belts will have multiple photo eyes. If the next photo eye does not sense a bag going by it within the prescribed time limits, or if a photo eye has a bag blocking the light beam for too long, it will shut down the affected area of the conveyor system. That’ is when mechanic has to go clear the jam and restart the belt line. There are other things that will cause the conveyor system to shut down but what i wrote is the basic gist of how the system works.
      When the bag has gone past the requisite number of photo eyes it will be diverted onto either a luggage pier or carousel. That is where the ramp workers will load the bags on to the baggage trailers to take them to the planes. The ramp workers will again scan the tags to let the computer know that the bag has made to them. Scanning the tag also ensures that the bag is going to the correct flight.
      That tag with the bar code is what keeps track of your bag. When the tag is printed out there are two small peel and stick bar codes on the tag. Make sure that you peel them off of the tag and adhere them to your luggage in an area where they will not peel off very easily. Also put your name, phone number, and address on a piece of paper INSIDE your luggage on the off chance that the bag tag gets torn off of your bag. The airlines don’t want your luggage and they make every effort to get it back to you if it comes up missing. An Air Tag inside your bag is also a great idea.
      I hope that this answered your question. 😀

    It’s actually a good video, but I agree, the thumbnail is trash, pure and simple!

      It's not original material and has been on CZcams before.

    It’s not pronounced Atlanta, it’s At-Lana. Just like it’s not Toronto, it’s Torono.

    There are ZERO buildings at the ATL Airport over a mile long. I worked there for 5 years. Delta Tech Ops is approx 1500 feet long so this video is VERY inaccurate, obviously paid for by Delta. :-(
