Practice Notes 57 | How to Sound Like Bach
In honor of Bach's 333rd birthday, here is "Happy Birthday" in the style of J.S. Bach, as well as a few pointers on how to sound like him (at least, on the surface). Of course, to really get in depth with his music would take 100 lifetimes -- but here is something playful to celebrate with. The piece starts at 1:55.

I'm proud!!
Happy Birthday to you 😎😎😎
JS Bach why do you have multiple you tube accounts? 😆
did you accept her friend request?
You have a supplanter upstairs.
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
Your ability to improvise in Bach's style blows my mind. The analysis you do of his "tricks" is impressive enough, but you integrate with grace some of his most subtle counterpoint idiosyncrasies. Your analysis and creative skills are very inspiring because they display a level of understanding of the material that is rarely found in interpreters coming out of today's music schools, myself included. Thanks for teaching and playing for us, and please keep doing it!
Thank you so much!! This happy birthday piece is CERTAINLY not improvised haha. You can tell the difference in complexity between something like this, and where I actually improvise, like in the Mary Had A Little Lamb video I did :) Thank you for the comment though!!
Yes please! This is amazing and I'm inspired to pick up piano again. Haven't played in a few years
@@NahreSol So one of the steps have been "spend a few hours working out the counterpoint," no? Very well done, but I can't believe you didn't even mention the word during this video.
@@NahreSol neither did I improvise the "Bach-style Fugato"! czcams.com/video/HqUmPKSy0sM/video.html
If Nahre Sol wants to interpret it in her favorite style, I will be happy to give her the musical score. :-)
That's not improvisation, but composition
Awesome, you could have told me Bach himself composed that and I would have believed it!
Thank you so much!!
@Sarin - one thing gave it away. Bach wouldn't write something that began in one key (in this case E major) and end on a chord other than E major or (in certain exceptional cases) the dominant, B major. Nahre's little piece ends on a C# major chord. That simply would not have fit in Herr Bach's ear.
@@dabeamer42 yeah, i don't think they were allowed to do that *bach* then
@@alexandrusimo899 lol
Fantastic!! Beautiful video and music Nahre!
Didn't know Beato would be here! :D
Rick Beato you really enjoy this channel (with just justification) and that speaks well not only about the art value of this channel but the educational abilty of this girl in particular. I think you should incorporate some of this in your own videos, making art with the purpose of condense information that takes too long (vide play time for the user) only to talk about and that sometimes we as novice musicians cant make use of such excellent information that you provides.
@@DonutDeflector Beato is ubiquitous!!!
Hey Rick here... i hope you're doing.... oh wrong Rick
You play a great piano Mr beato
I could listen to you do that for an hour. The Solberg Variations.
As a huge Bach fan, I am amazed by your ability to understand his music so well. How many thumbs up is the maximum one can give in youtube ? One is not enough.
That's better wıth Harpsıchord
My thought exactly: you can't really sound like Bach on piano.
@@Leery_Bard that is completely untrue lol
@@espressonoob What are you talking about?
@@Leery_Bard your comment?
@@espressonoob I've checked twice: I don't believe I've commented. Also, If I had, the comment would be right and true.
I'm sure Bach has already accepted your friend request. Brilliant!
he would be jealous tho...
@@kryogenicmx591 Over exaggerating
Bach's compositions are so rich ! I've been fighting with the same Bach prelude & fugue (n°2) for more than a year ... and still appreciate to hear it, with the same delight, each time.
Thank you Nahre for those brilliant pieces of advice and your everlasting optimism that shines through these lessons :)
I'd love to find a teacher like you, here in Belgium.
Jaw dropped
🙈 thank you 🙏
More like this! Do chopin and rachmaninoff too !!
Thank you!! :)) Yes yess
Someone else did a pretty ripping Chopin-ized Happy Birthday. There's no explanation of the theory though. But it sure sounds like Chopin, and is pretty insanely virtuosic as well. czcams.com/video/fihmHmMSgak/video.html (EDIT: now I'm not completely sure if this is the one I remember watching, but still worth a look)
Too late...
Rachmaninoff would be awesome and Mozart too.
Loved your vídeos :)
She did it :)
I tend to avoid your channel, because every time I visit it, i tend to neglect my practice and watch your entire CZcams output. Lol. Love your Musical Universe, keep them coming!
😂😂😂 thank you
Make it about 5 minutes long, score it for the organ, and I'll buy it and play it in church.
Aren't good short pieces long enough, also for church use. Pointing at Franck, Boëllmann, or Bach himself.
Hahahahahhahahahahhdhjhdgwuhhhfjjdjh
This is one of the most autstanding music dissections I've ever seen. Really really good!
Thank you !! 🙏
You are amazing. Keep it up!!
Jonny May You here? :D
As a huge fan of Bach, I thought no one would ever somewhat mildly capture his essence. However, you have managed to surprise me. Respect to you.
Trying to read all the pop-up words during the piece is like polyphony for the eyes 😍
Thank you so much for this fun and instructive video!
Bach is so powerful, always when I listen I feel like its empowering and strong. Knowing why it is like that is very precious. Thank you Nahre!
This is miraculous. They way you present this information is so clear and concise. I like how you used examples of correct and incorrect ways of sounding like Bach, that was very helpful! I have never subscribed so quickly to a channel.
WOW! It`s amazing, thanks for your videos! Please make more like this!
Love from Russia
Thank you!! 😊🙏
this video perfectly demonstrate how little i have of musical talent
Bjørn B THAT'S WHY YOU SHOULD STOP WATCHING CZcams !
GO PRACTICE AND BECOME LING LING !
If you know how little musical talent you have, that also implies you know what musical talent is…which is more than I can say for most people.
This is awesome! You're so great!
😍 thank you!!!
You're truly the best Nahre Sol. You're so humble and informative. Keep up the brilliant work.
That was absolutely unbelievable. As someone who reached the height of Bach's compositions by playing 2 part Inventions many decades ago, I am in awe. Thank you!
Exceptionally well done, Nancy. I thoroughly enjoyed that - and I love Bach’s solo keyboard works.
Nahre: “Avoid parallel fifths and octaves”
Bach’s 1st Keyboard Concerto: -_-
Bach occasionally uses them, but imperfect consonance was used more frequently, so yes you got the point!
On top of those impressive composition skills you put a lovely tone and a natural musical expression in your playing. That's real music and you're a great musician. Congratulations!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it... 🙏
Dang, girl! I loved that whole video so much! Great ideas, clearly shown, wonderfully edited and impeccably put together. Oh, and the playing and piece are lovely!
Thank you so much!! 🙏🙏🙏
Amazing! Hope it becomes a series.
Thank you!! :D
@@NahreSol can you do one of Mozart pleasee
This is such an amazing rendition of Bach's style. It sounded just like a piece written by Bach himself to me! Great analysis and applications!
As every Bach piece, there's so much going on!!! I love it! Do this kind of video on other composers' birthdays too!!!
Brilliant!! Interestingly enough, your video helped condense what is genuinely complex structure into something consumable and clear. I think I learned more in the few minutes here than in a few semesters of music theory. Lol
This is fantastic. Very well done.
That little "I'm shook" at the end was great. You PRESSED him!
Absolutely genius. i wish you make a four part harmony series with audio examples across history of music. there is no sources for learning harmony and counter point as music ,not as riddles. I love the video / thank u very much. have u tried harmonizing a Bach fuge subject with Wagner harmonizations?
Incredible! You must have a lot of experience playing his music... that's some pretty great counterpoint! Would you say this exercise (in no way do I mean to diminish the music!) was constructed more from your intuitions and experience as a pianist who has played a lot of Bach or more from a technical understanding of his music and counterpoint in general? I really like that ii-V-I (vi) cadence you use too ;)
You are blessed to be able to compose like Bach !
I am glad I discovered this stunning piece on my birthday !
You nailed Bach's idiom - indeed the idiom of the Baroque era - mind-blowingly complex as it is. There is something about that era, as exemplified by Bach and Handel in particular, which simultaneously nourishes one's brain as well as emotions. It is beauty.
How to sound like J. S Bach
Step one: Be J. S Bach
I am honored that you uploaded this on my birthday :)
Thank you! And happy birthday!!!!!!
Ah! I'm so happy to find you and your Chanel, girl! Finally a Pro with a clear open mind
WOW, this is really great, this music sounds like from Bach! Thanks for sharing your talent.
Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing your musical ideas, they are like a warm and tasty green tea cup.
Danilo Ivan Mondaca Rivera Thank you!!! 😊
The little fragment you chose that ends in the c# to g# feels sooooo good I can't explain it wow
I love the crunch!
I just found you yesterday while I was looking for info on Impressionism, checked out your web page, & am working on planning time in my life to take advantage of your trainings. You blow me away!
Best morning videos for breakfast are Nahre's, always filling us with motivation. Thank you.
😍 thank you 😍
That's incredibly wonderful. Bach is smiling.
Absolutely incredible, it moved really fast so I only caught some of what was going on but these are great concepts and really helpful.
a gem, this channel is.
As cool as i could hope it to be... i am grateful for having discovered this channel. Thank you.
I really find it helpful that you point out all the music theory aspects either in illustration or when it occurs.
this is next level wtf seriously, how can you do this and for so many composers. and above all the music is so beautiful and also so characteristic. wow
Mind..... blown. Literally. WOW.
Wow. I feel so humble and grateful... thank you for this...
Puppy sighting at 0:55! Serious, this is excellent! Happy Birthday, J.S. Bach!
Thank you so much!! And yes, my dog bobby
WOW. This was written and played extremely well! If I didn't know I would guess that JSB wrote it.
Happy Birthday Nahre Sol
Simply a masterpiece.
Just found your channel , as a fellow Composer & Conducter : your videos are exceptionally unqiue & great to watch
I am going to subscribe & 0:53 your dog made a great tricky intro 😂👍🏼🌸
Thank you!! Welcome 🐶😊 !!
Though I'm not an extremely big fan of his music, I certainly cannot say that he wasn't a genius, and that's because he was, indeed a genius
Your observations here in regard to what I would call Bach's "invention style" are simply brilliant. They bring a level of intelligibility to these works that I did not have before. For which, thanks. But to go further, your insights make me appreciate even more when Bach steps around or beyond these to aspire higher than intellectual sublimity, to the soul being with God.
Absolutely astonishing! Awesome
As a huge Bach fan and an amateur pianist, this is perhaps my favourite video of yours - thank you!
This play makes me birthday feel so much better! love from Holland
Just as good as the Satie one I watched before this. If all your videos are like this, consider me entertained. Thanks for making these.
For me, who am a lifetime music enthusiast and a wannabe musician, this is utterly impressive and excellent.
this is outstanding Nahre, never saw Bach explained so perfectly in 3 minutes...
Not so many people on this planet can do that, you can count them on your fingers. I am a fan of Bach since a long time :
This is an impressive lesson. You are very good.
Vous devez avoir des gènes du grand Bach pour arriver à faire ça, chapeau! c'est très beau ce que vous faites.
This completely blew my mind.
I love this!!! So obsessed!!!
love bach, love nahre sol
you're one of the greatest Canadian musicians in my humble opinion ! bravo!
Thank you!! I'm actually not Canadian though haha :D
@@NahreSol The guy must have seen some Tim Horton's or The Source in one of your videos.
Very nice video! I really enjoy how in-depth this example was.
You break down the musical concepts beautifully. I play guitar and it's so refreshing to see the structure of music explicated so clearly. Your videos are so well produced and fun to watch, and you are exceptionally talented. Look forward to more.
This is absolutely my favorite! Thank you🤣🤣
As usual, an exceptional and thought provoking breakdown. Your writing is always very inspiring.
You’re amazing. Why do you not have more subscribers!!!
Best Bach-ian version of Happy Birthday I have seen anywhere!
I did enjoy that. I love the visual of your fingers floating across the keyboard so effortlessly as well. Brilliant! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of the best videos I've ever seen
STUNNING!!!
This left me no choice. Now I must binge watch all of your videos. Your creativity is so inspiring, thank you!
Hats off to you! Brilliant work and teach, Nahre. This would be the piece Bach'd have done on his birthday.
Alright, brilliance and creativity aside, I never, EVER enjoyed the sound of a bell accompanying a checkmark quite so much. So satisfying.
That was brilliant! You described all the essential elements of J.S. Bach's music.
Amazing. Such a lesson!
Beautiful ! thanks a lot Nahre !
so awesome Nahre!!!
Big chunk missing - at least in the description, although it got better as it went on - exploring through the keys. Not just one to another and back, but sliding through several in succession.
very educational, and you packed so much info in. thanks
Phenomenal! You made me tear up from joy!
Brava! Amazing work and sounds!
Whoa! This is awesome! Excellent, bite-sized breakdown of Bach's style! Very good playing too!
Ummm, wow! The execution, explanation, and quality of this video is fantastic. What a wonderful homage to Bach! It's tailor-made for music majors, but has broad appeal with its accessibility and humor. Thank you.
Fantastic! I love your video. All your videos. I love J.S.Bach´s music, and you just make my jaw drop with admiration for your talent. I learn a lot from watching your videos, thank you so much for posting them.
Nahre I love you!!!!...your music is beautiful!!! Greetings from Chile
