I have a 2022 SE, but I didn't hear anything about transmission issues. My 9-speed is absolutely terrible. You never know what each gear shift is going to do. Sometimes it is buttery smooth, then the next one will be like a hard sport shift. When coming to a stop, the downshifts feel like someone is hitting the brakes multiple times as it downshifts to each lower gear. And once you are moving, the throttle response is like an on/off switch and goes from 0 to 15% so there is absolutely no way to press on the gas without feeling the car move forward. My wife yells at me that I'm making her sick when I'm trying to maintain 40 MPH because every time the throttle is pushed or released you can feel it in the car. I have driven nothing but Hondas since 1997, but I think I just bought my last one.
I do appreciate the video though, because now I know what to look out for.

Hey man, thank you very much for the advice. You're the only person on CZcams discussing this transmission jittering issue with Honda pilots. About 2 months ago, I was on the market for 2017-2020 Honda pilots, 6-speed ones. I test-drove about 6 cars, and 4 of them had some sort of transmission jittering issue. One of them was so bad that I had to stop driving because the salesperson thought something was wrong with the car. Only 2 were without problems and they were both at the Honda Dealership where I'm assuming they have changed the fluid because those cars had to be certified. I bought one from Rick Case Hyundai/ Genesis/ Kia/Audi dealership in Duluth, Georgia, and it had the same issue. I felt the jittering at low-speed gear shifting but I still ended up buying the car because they gave me 10 years 100k, engine, transmission, and drive-axle warranty and it had a very clean interior. After driving for a few hundred miles, the jittering issue started irritating me. So I followed your advice to drain-fill it three times (I wanted to do three but I only had 8 bottles of DW-1, Honda Genuine trans fluid, so I've only done two times), and man, I'm telling you, the transmission felt so much better right away. I say, 90% of the jittering was gone. It had 65K miles at the time, and I'm guessing the previous owner never changed the trans fluid because the fluid was soo dark and the magnetic drain plug had so much black thick tar-like stuff on it. I've driven about 8K miles after those flushes and now I want to do another flush. Hope it fixes the very little jittering that's left in it. I've changed the oil once already and going to do one very soon. I'm a bit worried that the previous owner might not have taken care of it well because I do not see much carfax service/oil change history on it. It had a clogged windshield wiper fluid reservoir filter because the blue wiper fluid it had in the reservoir broke down and created a thick blue slushy. The fluid pump came out of the reservoir socket, I'm guessing because the water could not pass through the filter. I took it to my local Honda dealership and they said the whole reservoir and the pump need to be replaced and it's $490 total. I thought that was excessive, so I decided to buy an aftermarket reservoir and motor for $50 and change it myself. When I took the wheel cover off to inspect, I found out that the fluid pump is running but it popped out of the socket. I was not able to take the whole reservoir off because it would require me to take the front bumper off, and I felt it was not worth it. Kinda frustrating that Honda put the reservoir bolts in out-of-view places. I was able to clean the filter and everything, and ran water through the reservoir and the fluid pump several times; man there was soo much of that thick blue slushy. On second thought, I'm thinking somebody might've put 100% thick anti-freeze coolant in it because they put water in it before and it froze and when the ice expanded, the pump got pushed out and I'm guessing they put pure anti-freeze hoping to melt the water. I'm glad to say, it is fully working now after I've cleaned it and put it back in place. One problem I have now is that I hear the wheel-bearing type of noise. Took it to the dealer and they said they were not able to diagnose it as bad wheel bearings. I very much hear the noise when I'm turning or just driving on a nice curvy road. Would you be able to think of any other issues that could cause that noise? I have KUMO tires on and they seem to be in a good condition. The front brake pads are still good and I have not checked the rear brake pads yet. I once had a wheel bearing problem on my 2012 Honda accord and a local mechanic shop changed the wrong wheel bearing. They thought it was the front left but it ended up being the front right wheel. He made me buy the whole wheel hub assembly because it was cheaper to buy that and install it than to change just the bearing. I was disappointed that they've done this so I rented a wheel bearing tool from Orileys and changed just the other bearing myself. After these incidents, I find it hard to believe a mechanic if he just wants to replace parts without doing much diagnostics. Again, thanks for your videos. Now I know what to look for if these common issues occur to me; and thank you very much for reading my rant. Hope you continue making videos on Hondas.

Hey man thanks for your much in depth comment.
Yes do the trans service 1-2 more times and then every 15k going forward. This should help tremendously.
Unfortunately when buying used cars shitty previous owner maintenance is always a concern but do what you can now going forward.
As far as the noise I would take a very close look at the tires for culling (highs and lows on tires specifically on the inner part of the tire), very common on those and the only solution I have been able to reduce that is rotate tires very frequently.
Let me know how it goes and thanks again.

Good to know. In addition if you have an AWD with the ZF 9 speed the ONLY way to put it in neutral manually is to have a tool that turns a little shaft on top of the trans and holds in the neutral position. Its spring loaded so the tool has to stay in place should your car ever have to be winched up onto the tow truck. Honda sells their own tool ($$) or if your like me I made my own. It consists of a handle that stays on the shaft and a pin that is dropped into the end of the handle to hold it in place. I also have a $12 circuit that disables the auto stop/start feature..:)

Had the snap crackle pop issue for 2 years in a 2019 Passport before the dealer finally fixed it. So many issues with the Passport, rough shifting / stiff suspension / car wont go forward when the door is opened (got stuck at a gas station because I couldn't close the door next to the pump as the door was opened and slightly passed the U shaped barrier, had to push R and D literally a hundred times back and forth as sometimes if you were fast enough it would go forward for a sec, but you had to give it gas too at the exact right time in drive for that second, tricky and over-engineered unnecessary nanny safety.) Then it's got the VCM. The dreaded VCM. Now I have the Pilot 2022 and got the SVCM installed in case I decide to keep it, but the ZF9 while ultra smooth is concerning, a real PITA for drain and fill and I highly doubt any tech will follow the steps to do it the way Honda stated, most don't even know to go into VSA mode when I asked two dealerships locally on how they do it. BS they couldn't design the ZF9 with an external filter, let alone a magnetized plug that could be used to collect metal fragments and replaced, and why Honda, why, didn't you allow it with a dipstick like the FCA model. If this turns out to be crap, I'm all in Toyota/Lexus next time.
Also had the rotor issue you mentioned too! Great video, thanks!
    Quick questions:
    1. if I keep this car, how long does it take for a timing belt / pump / tensioner / serpentine belt to do, a day at the dealership?
    2. If you do less the 4K a year, when would you recommend a drain/fill for the ZF9 in the Pilot? Any tips/tricks you've learned to make sure the fill is correct other than what Honda states as the procedure?
    Thanks again!
Edit (Again) I really like your content and passion on working on these Hondas, more importantly, I like that your showing the work, most dealerships hide it, I've always been inquisitive and want to learn even though I may not have the time / tools and equipment to do so. Side note: I've had really bad experiences with Honda dealerships in the past, hence my comment above on the ATF drain and fill, as it's got me nervous when the time comes and the power train warranty expires and if they don't do it right....; is there anyway in the future to get you for work on them when the time comes and live in the area, I'm sure it's just not me who would be interested!

      @BCautosolutions  Před rokem +1

Thanks for you well thought out and processed comment. These engineers over simplify some of the most basic things that turn into headaches in a real world situation. To anwser your questions:
Timing belt package takes about 2-3 hours on that car done by someone who has done it plenty of times.
If your driving that little I would do it every 30k, trans fluid won’t break down of pick up moisture which lowers it boiling point like brake fluid.
If you were to do it at home it’s real simple. If your just going to drain and fill it simply drain it into a 5qt measuring bucket and put back exactly what came out.
If you or anyone need my local services I can be contacted via Instagram (Hondamobilemechanic) or email: bcautosolutions20@gmail.com

@@BCautosolutions Thanks for your quick and thorough reply, greatly appreciated! I think I'm going to buy out my lease and get HondaCare 8 years. I love the way the Pilot handles and knowing the VCM is disabled, so all 6 run all the time, no uneven wear, I'm no longer concerned with stop/go traffic and longevity of the engine, premature failure of the $1K motor mounts/fouled spark plugs/oil in the cat convertor/numerous other issues noted on accord/piloteers/mdx/tlx forums and noted in the original class action lawsuit against Honda for the VCM and I do notice when I need power, it's there, no hesitation, it's almost as fun to drive as the 2016 V6 touring I had, loved driving it, too bad you can't get that anymore, you now have to get the TLX Type S for the V6 in a sedan, the Accord V6 2016 Touring was the best value/performance car ever, would've kept it, but was concerned about the VCM/engine and related parts longevity, esp. since I wasn't aware of being able to disable it, if I knew, would have bought it and kept it.
Great to know about the timing belt timing (when the time comes, it's awhile away, in 7 years) and about the drain / fill for the ZF9. When it comes time to service the Pilot, first oil change (still in break-in oil,) differential fluid, brakes/new tires, etc...I'll contact you, esp. for the timing belt kit in 7 years (and of course, hopefully not, any warranty work if you accept warranty work.) The timing belt is my main concern as I know it's a PITA to do so and get it right watching a lot of videos on that, e.g. ericthecarguy And you nailed it, that's the KEY! You said "by someone who has done it plenty of times' that's what I want, what I think we'd all want, is that experience that most dealerships/independents don't get, as they probably get the typical lubrication / tires / brake pads, etc work done, not the more complicated jobs like the timing belt.
Thanks again and keep up the great work, I'm sure a lot of people appreciate it aside from myself!

I have a 2019 Passport Elite and to get it to move with the door open and engine running you need to be in the drivers seat and have the seatbelt on. I learned this parking in my garage, as soon as you take off the seat belt with the door open it will go into park. leave the belt on, open the door and the car will move if you need to adjust your parking space.

@@shipdog44 Thanks! I gave mine up on the lease end in Nov 22, I really preferred the Passport design, but everything felt like it was a beta SUV, it's probably significantly improved now, but I got the 2022 Pilot Touring and love it, except for the outside design. On close examination, it does have some minor paint issues and fitment issues with the outside plastic trim. I hope yours was better built than mine. I'm getting use to the ZF9 and like it, just need be aware of the two dog clutchs and when and when not to push it hard and when switching from R to D / D to R, have to wait for the dogs to sync, give it a few seconds before you hit the gas.

@@See6H12O6 Hope you enjoy your new Honda. I've been driving Hondas and Acuras (3) since 2005 and have had no issues. Had the timing belt replaced on the '05 Pilot at 100K miles. It is an expensive service ($1,250), but it is very common on many cars these days. Most reputable shops have experience doing it. I use a local NAPA AutoCare shop for everything. They are independent but meet NAPA requirements. I feel like they have higher quality parts and technicians too, but not as expensive as a dealership. My Passport just turned 50K miles and will be 4 years old in May. I've had no issues at all. I'm looking at the new 2023 Pilot Trailsport. I lease new every four years now. I'll have oil changed but no tires, Brakes, timing belts or repairs in that time as that has been the case with my last two. That is my plan going forward. I'll keep buying Hondas.

I’ve got Honda care warranty eight years/120 thousand miles . I was wondering if I could have you work on it, are you at a Honda dealership?
Intermittently car runs rough throws itself into neutral, and finally stalls, it would start right back up but lately it’s been doing it more often at least twice a day and all it does is just cranks at least four or five cycles before it decides to start again
Edit: Honda got involved and it ended up being an EGR valve. Odd thing is it never set off a code or a check engine light. Fingers crossed the repair sticks.

Transmission fluid drain and fills are such a rip-off, way worse than an oil change. Changing ATF is easier than changing oil. Your fluid is $50-$80 depending on where you live. Pop the drain plug, drain, replace crush washer, refill through the dipstick holder with a little funnel and a longer one. You don’t have to change the filter. Save yourself $100-150 if you have a 3/8 ratchet, ramps and a little kitchen funnel.

Hey Brian, quick question whenever you have a moment, can you possible do this test on a 3rd gen Pilot if you get one. When the Pilot is off:
    1. Use the remote start to start it.
    2. Hold Break / Push the Start button and put it in Park for about a minute.
    3. While in Park, hold the break (important, do not hit the gas at anytime in Park or Reverse) and put the Pilot in Reverse and keep it like this for at least 15 seconds while holding the break.
Do you get: "Stop Driving When Safe. Transmission Problem. See Manual." and then the Pilot shifts to Neutral?
I think Honda did this either on purpose or the software just defaulted with that message on a remote start for holding in R in that case, not that they specifically did that, but a default to put in N after holding in R without ever moving it in R after a certain amount of time. I don't think there's a real issue, no weird sounds / shifts fine if you know it's syncing dog clutch characteristics. I posted this on Piloteers and user mentioned a post on the Ridgeline forum that it's happened to them too. This only happens on Remote Start, not a regular start.

@@BCautosolutions it surprised me as well. I bought it brand new and when I took it to the dealer for its 2 year inspection they noticed an oil leak. First they thought it was an engine leak, then a transmission leak. After a tear down of the transmission, it was determined to be the head gasket. After waiting 3 months for the part to come in because it back ordered, I was told it couldn't be installed because there were pits and scratches in the engine cylinder. WTH?? My service advisor kept telling me I was getting a whole new engine (under warranty) but after I showed a few people the notes on my receipt they said it was just an overhaul. I am very disappointed by this. And I know it wasn't the dealers fault but I'm pissed that no one could offer me any explanation as to why this happened on a NEW car.
