Hot Fudge Sauce - Sanders Detroit Style

- When I was growing up, there were Sanders stores all over the Detroit area. These wonderful stores were filled with candies, cakes, ice cream and treats of all kinds. There was also a counter where you could enjoy a sandwich or sundae. My favorite was the Hot Fudge Cream Puff, where a big scoop of vanilla ice cream was in the middle of a light cream puff and covered in this delicious hot fudge sauce. My friend Kurt found a recipe for the hot fudge sauce and talked me through recreating this Detroit classic!
Here's a link to my video for the CREAM PUFFS if you want to make a Hot Fudge Cream Puff treat:
• Making Cream Puffs.wmv
Recipe for Hot Fudge Sauce:
12 ounce bag milk chocolate chips (I used Nestle)
2 sticks butter
14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1 3/4 cup light corn syrup
Use a double boiler for this recipe. If you don't have one you can make one by placing a metal or glass bowl over a simmering pot of water (see video).
In the top of a double boiler, melt the butter and chocolate chips together, stirring often. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk and corn syrup. Stir ingredients together over heat for about 8 minutes.
Reduce heat to medium-low and cook uncovered, without stirring, for 30 minutes.
Remove sauce from heat and let cool 15-20 minutes. Working in small batches (1 cup or so) place sauce in blender and blend on highest speed for one minute. Transfer sauce to another bowl after it's blended. Place fudge in sealed jars. Fudge sauce will keep in freezer for up to a year.

Hot Fudge Ice cream Puff is still my favorite dessert! Miss Sanders. Miss Detroit of my youth!
Thanks, Mary!
Here's to food, family, friends and fudge!
LOL! In that order! Thanks, Albert!
Oh my, blast from the past
Hi Lisa - glad it took you back in time! Thanks!
Shout out to Mary Ann for loving ginger ale. Folks like us gotta stick together. You remind me of the hot fudge sauce of my own youth. It was called Johnston's and it came in a foil packet which you heated by steeping in a saucepan of simmering water. Never found a recipe though.
Hi James - Marianne loves her ginger ale! We didn't have pop in the house often growing up, but when we did it usually meant company was coming over and there was always a bottle of Vernor's! I never saw Johnston's hot fudge but the idea of warming up a pouch in hot water is a great one! Thanks!
You know it’s gonna be a good day when you wake up & find a new Cavalcade episode! I didn’t grow up with a Sanders, but I do remember sitting at the Woolworth’s counter as a kid, enjoying a fountain drink!
Hi Jenni - Oh, how I miss the old stores and their soda fountains and lunch counters! Thanks!
I am so excited to make this. Sanders Hot Fudge was always my favorite and I was sad when it disappeared. I have so many Sanders memories. We could walk to one from my high school. I often took my son to the Sanders at 7 & Mack for the lunch special: tuna sandwich, Vernors (in the chrome cup holder with paper cone cup) and a hot fudge sundae.
Hi Peggy! Oh, I remember those paper cones in the heavy metal holders they would give you for water - and the water was SO cold! I really miss those days! I'll bet your son loved having lunch with you at the counter! Some of my fondest mom memories involve sitting next to her at a counter somewhere eating something good! Thanks!!
It's not just the yummy food that evokes childhood memories that I like about this - it's the camaraderie. Thanks, Kevin. Always a joy.
You're welcome, Cynthia! Getting together with friends in the kitchen one of life's pleasures.
Great job you should have guest sharing they're recipes with the fellow foodies
Hi Earl - I agree! It's fun having guest on - I'm going to try and do it more often. Thanks!
So much fun guys, THANK YOU ☺️🎉
You're welcome - thanks for watching!
My arteries are clogging from just watching but go ahead and pass me a spoon. I want chopped pecans or chopped walnuts in mine.
Hi lynnallen! It's not health food, but once in a while it is a real treat! Chopped nuts would put it over the top! Thanks!
LOL, I'm not knocking it. I put white Karo on my grocery list so I can try it!
Thank you Kevin, Ralph and Kurt....looks delicious!
You're welcome, Valli! This is a yummy one!
What a great episode-such fun! The original Sanders went out of business when I was young, but I do remember going with my mother to some of their stores-Arborland, Westland Mall and Briarwood Mall.
Hi LRF - Sanders had stores in many of the malls. I remember the one in Westland. Thanks!
I'm from Detroit and my mother used to take me to Sanders for lunch and we always had a cream puff. I used to be able to get the Sander fudge from Amazon, but not lately. I'm go glad I found your video. I'm going to make cream puffs and your fudge sauce for her birthday. I know she's going to love it. Thank you
Hi Lorraine! This will be a real treat for your mom!! Enjoy!
@@cavalcadeoffood The hot fudge sauce turned out amazing. We all loved it. I will definitely be making this again.
Cheers to you all!! Love your channel ❤ thank you Kurt!
Thanks so much, Paul!!
I just discovered your program last night and couldn't believe you were showing how to make Sanders Hot Fudge sauce! I also grew up in Dearborn and frequented the Sanders on Michigan Ave near Schaffer. I'm so glad I've found you. Been watching you make cabbage rolls and many things I remember having growing up in Michigan. And love hearing you talk with your "Detroit accent". I'm almost 80 and moved out of MI in 1975 to San Diego. I miss ALL the great food and am so glad you're on CZcams!!!
Thank you so much, Judith! Wonderful to hear from a "Dearbornite!" and I'm glad you enjoyed the Sanders hot fudge recipe! A little taste of home!! Thanks for watching!
Unsalted or salted butter? I am going to remember this recipe for gifting at Christmas.
Hi Jane - unsalted butter would be best. This would make a wonderful Christmas gift! Thanks!
Always a fun time watching your videos. Thank you.
You're welcome, Gary!
oh Kevin...this looks amazing! just in time for our church's ice cream social! Thank you for sharing and for your friend being on the show!
You are very welcome and I hope your ice cream social is a great success! Thank you!
Thanks for the recipe! Recently, Sanders brought back Hot Fudge Topping BUT the reviews say that it's NOT even close to the original. This realization brought me here to learn to make it myself. Can't wait to try it!
Hi HensHobbies - friends who have tried the new hot fudge from Sanders say it's not the same recipe and does not taste anything like the original. I find this recipe to come very close the taste I remember. Thanks!
I love my Wonder Cup. I received this as a gift from my sister years ago and I use it regularly!
They are handy, Marty - glad you have one!
Kurt is a man after my own heart. I always order Hot Fudge Sundae's with chocolate ice cream. It's the best. I'm going to have to try this recipe.
Chocolate on chocolate! It's hard to argue with that! Hope you try the recipe!
And Thank you for sharing this recipe😋
You're welcome!
This looks amazing. Yes, it's sad when you can't find good food that was so good. Here in Ny, Grandma Brown's Baked Beans were made in Mexico, NY and available until covid came. The factory never reopened. They were the best baked beans...so different from any others.
Hi Gary - I never had Grandma Brown's Baked Beans - don't know if they sold them here in Michigan but I love baked beans, so I'm sorry I won't have a chance to try them. Always disappointing when they stop making something that's really good. Thanks!
Thank You!!! I love you!!!
You're welcome, stadeler! Thanks for the love!!
Oh my gosh, this episode made me laugh out loud! (The vodka lemonade I was drinking while watching made me get loud.) I'm going to try this topping the next time the grandkids come over. Thanks!😊
Thanks, MSB! The grandkids will love this topping!
I just found your channel and I grew up on Sanders! I have great memories of my Grandmother taking me to the Sanders soda fountain when I would visit. I loved all of the flavors, especially the dark Swiss and butterscotch. Can't wait for my next visit for a cream puff hot fudge and a Coney dog!
Hi kellys! So glad you found the channel! Thanks for sharing your Sanders memories!
Lived in southwest Detroit in late 80's/ early 90's, I remember Telway, but sure don't recall a Sanders anywhere!
I think by the late 80's there were just a few neighborhood Sanders stores still around. I'm sure there was one in southwest Detroit somewhere, but it was probably already closed by the 80's. Thanks!
I live in northeastern Michigan and have happily bought Sanders fudge sauce from our grocery stores for years . Haven’t looked for any recently though. Good to know I can use this recipe to make my own if I can’t find in the stores. 💗💗💗💗
Hi Kathleen - if any of your grocers still have some buy it! They are no longer making it, so it would be good to have a jar or two. Thanks!
This is a great idea for the grandkids they love projects like this
Hi Pam - this would be a fun family project! Thanks!
Such a nice video! It was a trip down memory lane! We grew up with the " bumpy" cake and a trip for ice cream at Sanders. Some stores still have their products. An all time favorite !! So much fun!
Hi Terry Sue! Glad it brought back memories! Bumpy cake was my dad's favorite and we often had it for his birthday or Father's Day. Thanks!
Please forgive the comparison, but this was like watching comedy and voiceover greats Mel Blanc and Jim Backus make hot fudge sauce. I laughed all through it. And that Vernor's Ginger Ale ice cream sounds like heaven. We never had Sanders in the South, just the Guilford Dairy Bar, Mayberry Ice Cream Shop or the Tastee-Freez. Back when local dairies had ice cream parlors and the milkman came door to door.
Hi Jonathan - I had forgotten about that Vernor's ice cream until Marianne mentioned it. They sold it at Sanders - imagine a ginger ale flavored ice cream - it was heaven! Sounds like you had a lot of great options for goodies, too!
The hot fudge sauce is so impressive & what a joy to be able to recreate a childhood favorite! Kurt was starting to act like Ralph 6:26 (who likely encouraged him to do so -- beforehand), 😁 but you soon put him in his place, Kevin. So funny! 😂🤣
Hi curlyqstooge! Going in, I didn't know who was going to cause the trouble: Kurt or Ralph, so I tried to nip it in the bud! LOL! Thanks so much!
That looked so delicious! So rich and buttery.
Hi Tucker -that butter flavor was the key to this hot fudge being so delicious. Thanks!
We must not have lived far from each other. When I was a young boy in the 50's my Mother used to take me to the Sander's on Michigan near Schaefer. We would sometimes have lunch there, or a cream puff covered with Saunders chocolate syrup. We lived in Dearborn near Ford Rd and Schaefer Rd. Great memories. Thanks for this guy's!
Hi Cudaus! I remember that Sander's on the east side of Dearborn. We grew up around Telegraph and Cherry Hill so we went to the one on the west side of town! Those were the days! Thanks!
@@cavalcadeoffood Oh, you were west enders. Wasn't there one on like Michigan and Monroe?
Yum-O this looks good!
It was! Thanks, EE!
Great video as always. After watching, I went back in time and watched your cream puff video. Since the fudge sauce makes so much, great Christmas giving gift. Thank you. Be well to all! 😁🥰
Thank you, Sharon! Great idea for Christmas giving!
I didn't grow up in Detroit and so have never experienced Sanders. I bet I don't know what I've missed. The sauce looks delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
You're welcome, Nancy! It was fun to re-live a memory of this great treat!
Good show . Made hungry.
Thanks, Charles!
Thanks for sharing this great recipe. I had the recipe a long time ago and it disappeared. Yep, milk chocolate chips is a must.
You're welcome, lynn!
This will go good on our homemade ice cream!!!
Will it ever! A perfect match - enjoy!
I wonder if you can use an immersion blender in the bowl to make it easier. The eagle brand milk reminds me of my aunt's caramel pie recipe from o'charleys restaurant
Hi jlight - an immersion blender might work for this - I'll have to try it and see if it's able to put as much air into the mixture as a standard blender. Thanks!
Thank you for showing how you use your glass bowl over the pot of water. I don’t own a double boiler, but I have that exact bowl.
Hi Anna - if you have that bowl you see how easy it is to use it as a double boiler - works great! Thanks!
We used olto go to the store in the Oakland Mall, though we went to others on occasion.
I didn't know there was a Sanders in Oakland Mall! Thanks!
@cavalcadeoffood Sadly, this would have been pre-1985 or so. I believe next to the Coney Island... But yeah, I lived in Ferndale for many years, then Avon, then Troy. Long, long ago. (Well, to me. 😊) But that's before Vernor's changed/was bought by Pepsico, or Stroh's was still made Downtown.
Faygo still rocks!
My mom and grandma took us kids to the Oakland Mall Sanders in Troy Michigan too! She let me get the hot fudge cream puff even though I was a kid she knew it wouldn't be wasted 🤣 great memories.
I'm not sure if anybody remembers Morley's Candy in Macomb Township. when I was younger, I remember they had all the school fundraisers every year. A few years back, they bought all the recipies and name rights when Sander's went bankrupt. When they started releasing new Sander's products, it got so popular they changed the name of the company to Sander's Fine Chocolates, operate in a large factory in Clinton Township, MI. You can find their stuff in stores all over the place, and they give free tours of the factory.
Hi - I remember Morley's Candy and have been to the factory on Hall Road. I've heard they are going to start making the hot fudge sauce again, but have yet to see it in the stores. thanks!
It really works
Thanks, Earl!
@@cavalcadeoffood My pleasure
I need a Wondercup in my kitchen!
Hi CC - they are so handy! I use mine all the time!
Have you guys been to the old Morley Candy store/factory on Hall Rd. in Clinton TWP? Sanders bought the building a few years ago, so when you're not in the mood to make the sauce, you can buy some from them.
I searched this recipe because it's 10:43pm on a Tuesday night, the roads are icy, and there's no way I'm going out to get some. Thank you for sharing this recipe! (Also, hello from Clinton TWP/Macomb!)
Furthermore, for those who aren't aware, Vernors cures everything from the common cold to an upset stomach. It probably cures warts and broken bones, too.😂
Hi lizjoe! Yes, we've been to the Morley Candy store on Hall Road. I believe that Morley actually bought the Sanders name. Glad to know they have some. They weren't making it for a while because of some issue with the equipment used in the manufacturing. I agree about Vernors being a cure-all...and it tastes great!
Ralph!! We've missed you! The hot fudge looks fantastic. The owner of a company I used to work for was from Detroit and while I don't remember her talking about Sanders she did talk often about Vernors ginger ale and always had us on the hunt for it even here in Portland, OR.
Thanks, Harley! Vernors is another great old Detroit product! Was it hard to find in Portland? At one time, it was only available in the Midwest. Thanks!
@@cavalcadeoffood We finally did find Vernors here in Portland but we did have to hunt for it!
Now you have to keep some of this sauce for the home made ice cream video that you will do next week. OBTW, you clearly have more fun when you're cooking with someone.
Hi Scooter! Yes - I'm planning on an ice cream episode! It's always more fun to cook with friends in the kitchen! Thanks!
Thank you, Kurt, Kevin, Ralph, and Mary Ann. I’m intrigued by the ginger ale ice cream. I wonder how that is made. 😊
Hi Anna - I don't know how they made it, but it sure was good! Seems like it would be a popular flavor still today - wish someone would make it. Thanks!
Bless my diabetic heart!!😊
I'm not from the Detroit area, so I never heard of Sanders, but it sounds like a wonderful place!!
This looks delicious... would be an excellent and decadent treat!
I have a version of your Wonder Cup that was sold through Pampered Chef here in Minnesota years ago.
It is a wonderfully handy kitchen tool. 😊😊😊
I sure do miss having music featured on your channel... must be for copyright reasons? Oh well...
Hi Greg! Sander's was a special place because going there always meant you were going to get something good! It was a joy to re-live a childhood treat once again! Those Wonder-Cup type measuring cups are the best...I use mine constantly! Yes, can't use any licensed copyrighted music. Thanks!
A stick blender would be a lot less messy but with fewer items to lick when you are finished.
Hi bearmaine! You're right about using a stick blender, but I got to enjoy all that was stuck to the inside of the blender when we were done! Thanks!
Hilarious all 3 x
Did she say Vernors ice cream? Where's that been my whole life? I LOVE Vernors. I lived in Texas for a few years, and one store would carry it special for me and a few other Detroiters in the neighborhood down there. I shared it with everyone, got a lot of people hooked on it!
Hi micamp! She did say Vernor's ice cream and it was incredibly good! It came on a brown sugar cone and had that wonderful ginger zip that was Vernor's - so good! Glad you shared your Vernor's down in TX! I'll bet people loved it!
Love this recipe! So glad you took out the extra fat calories & added vitamins. I don't completely understand why you use a blender at the end. Was it, as Ralph surmized, to incorporate air thus preventing separation? Had a lot fun watching. Hello to Maryann & Kirk. Ralph thank you for doing the camera work. Always nice to have everyone together. God bless.
Thanks so much, Sallie! Yes, turns out the blending aerates the mixture and helps keep it from separating. Thanks!
I know that there were supply chain issues this past winter, but I just bought a 42 oz can of Sanders hot fudge at a local Kroger store. And it looks like you can also find it at -- oddly enough -- The Vernors Store in Madison Heights 😀
Hi Duane - glad you found some! According to the Sanders website "...we have stopped selling Sanders toppings on line and in grocery stores." I haven't seen it around for months, but it sounds like they are having issues with the production of it, so hopefully that works out and it becomes more available in the future. Thanks!
Love all the Detroit recipes! Love all the appliance videos you guys do a great job. One question where do you get all the great old appliances? I would love a vintage stove , refrigerator etc. You guys have a lot of them do you sell them? If not where could I buy them?
Thanks, Pierre! Glad you enjoy the videos! No, I don't sell anything - just a collector. They are easy to find - estate sales, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist. Look around online and hopefully you'll find some vintage appliances you that are right for you!
Looks interesting I am curious to try that with See’s Candies Chocolate Chips
Hi RugbyFootballer - I'll bet it would be great made with See's chocolate chips!
A sweet & saucy video! 😝 I would be licking that bowl clean-I’m a chocolate nut 🌰
LOL! Thanks, CC! We got every drop out of that bowl!
I wanted to send away for some of this, but it seems to have disappeared. I was trying to re-create Peabody's of Birmingham's Hot Fudge Sunday. They used this, plus French Vanilla Ice Cream, and topped with their Maurice Salad's Candied Chopped Pecans. I have their cookbook somewhere, and I will post how to make them(Candied Pecans). You have not lived until you eat them.
Hi ssmith! I remember Peabody's very well and ate there many times! I didn't know they put out a cookbook. Thanks!
Asked the Rochester Sanders store about the hot fudge and also the caramel sauce shortage. They told me the company purchased another site to produce the sauces. Working out the equipment and process to resume full production levels. The fudge sauce is available , caramel sauce will be back to regular😂 levels soon. It’s not disappearing, all good. Sounds like a glitch in the transfer of production or supply chain problems relating to machinery or ingredients. FYI
Hi Janice - thanks for the information. Sounds like once they get all the equipment moved in and installed in the new building they can get back to making enough of it to cover the shelves at all the stores. That's great news because it's much easier to buy it than make it - but it was a fun effort! Thanks for letting me know!
Thanks for sharing. Is that butter salted or unsalted? Thanks again!
Hi Steve - I used unsalted butter. Thanks!
Whoa …Do people really not know what a double boiler is? wow I’ve been around too too long! 😂😂😂….yup I’m thinking the ladle would have been best..so which one of you 3 won the contest of being the biggest smartaxxx?😂😂😂 Thanks for the recipe!
Hi Ladythyme! Some people who don't have a lot of kitchen experience don't know about certain tools, like a double boiler, so I try to explain these in the videos. It was a toss up between Ralph and Kurt winning the prize! LOL!
I used to have one of those measuring cups I think you get it from pampered chef
Hi Tracy - yes, they sold them!
Amazon sells it!!!!
Great to know - thanks, Ann!
@@cavalcadeoffood Although making me yourself is so much more fun! Enjoy your program especially since both my parents were Detroiters!!! Vernors is the bomb!!!!
Kevin, I'm double dipping for my roommate who is a tremendous cook. She suggested a little instant coffee to intensify the chocolate flavor. Would it work for this recipe? And as a side note, I need to correct my spelling of your friend's name, Kurt. My phone fought my edit on previous comment.
Hi Sallie! A little coffee would boost the chocolate flavor a bit, but in this case it wouldn't have that Sander's taste. I might also use dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips rather than milk if I was going to add in some coffee. It would be fun to try!
Dippity Doo. Ha Ralph!
Isn't Ralph a cut-up? Thanks!
