There was never a greater genius in Carnatic music in the last century than Dr MBK. Lot of people criticized him saying he wasn't traditional. This episode shows how authentic he was. Brilliant diction, mellifluous singing and could relate to the layman. 🙏🙏🙏

Thanks he was not traditional. Dr BMK's concerts in the late 90's when we listen it now in CZcams we music students and musicians in this era get a lot of ideas for manodharmam in many ragams.

Narrative is like watching a thriller movie. Childishly wishing that you shouldn't say 'On that note' so soon knowing fully the video is approaching the end.
    Balanced view of the legend.
The authority to innovate comes from the mastery of tradition.

Sanjay, You nailed it. I have been following BMK from the early sixties. Your anecdote on the interval happened many years ago in Shanmukhananda Hall for the first time. MSG/TVG were accompanying and when TVG started playing the Thani a similar thing happened . TVG himself stopped playing and started looking at the people who were going out and said "porava ellarumm pottum. Yarodum mudugukku vashikarthu iillai". BMK announced " an intermission for 10 minutes" and requested MSG /TVG to go off the stage to the green room. The traditionalists of the Sabhha could not swallow it and they went back stage and asked BMK why did he give an intermission. His reply was funny to me. He said just like you guys need a break we also need one to have our "vetthilai pakku". After 15 minutes the crowd was back and TVG finished his Thani that brought the roof down. One "On that note " is not enough to speak about BMK. I have been a witness to many incidents of BMK thanks to TVG. The three giants of the Indian music world. Thanks Sanjay for speaking about BMK.

No one can sing badrachala ramadasa krithis like vidwan balamuralikrishna. So soulful and sung with such bhavam.
And since I am a kannadiga, I feel that after MLV amma and MS amma, vidwan balamuralikrishna's purandaradasa krithis are very very soulful and filled with bhavam. After MLVamma and MS amma, I feel that vidwan Balamuralikrishna was one of the few carnatic artists who actually understood the beautiful kannada sahithyam and so he could render purandaradasa krithis with bhavam.. 🙏🙏🙏

LP record reminds me of how I myself fell in love with BMK's singing. It was 'Nanubrova mani cheppave' in his LP on Bhadrachalam Ramadass keerthanams. And I remember in Bombay in early 70s, while on my recorder BMK was singing Vathapi Ganapathim, the milk man who came listened to it for a minute and said, I don't know what music this is, but the voice, rhythm and emotion are superb, you are blessed to be listening to this.
BMK had that in him. To attract every one who listened to him, for one minute, or one hour or one life time.
Thanks for reminding us of that.

BMK was a serious muscian yet made it easy for many to follow. The Begada composition Saamiki sari was my favourite, glad you mentioned it. The Nagaswarali Sreepathe nee pada was also very nice. Nanu kanna thalli was different and I have read that you (Sanjay) and S. Rajam investigated to find that BMK version was most authentic. Yet when he was on viola for Semmangudi, he played the way SSI sang of course with a smile. In his interview BMK mentioned from his father's Guru (true Thyagaraja shishya parampara) gave him a note book of the Saint's composition with notation. Hence he mentioned that as he sings as in it - his music was classical. BMK is like Deepawali among festivals - There is celebrations and at the same time a mythological and spiritual aspect in it too. Many make a mistake of seeing his wants while they miss a MOUNTAIN OF ACHIEVEMENTS. Thanks Sanjay for a heartfelt praise on BMK.

I have heard about Balamuralikrishna Sir a lot. His recording of Devadi Deva in Sunadavinodini Ragam is stupendous and his voice was very fascinating to me. I used to wonder how he could reach 3 octaves without any strain. And I have also heard that Balamuralikrishna Sir if he feels like having an icecream or something cold, he would have it and nothing would happen to his usual voice. And his poruttam swarams are superb in kirthanam's like Bhajana Seyave where Sir sings Swarams like SD Bhajana Seyave where you do not realise that they are Swarams but become part of the composition.

On that Note of hard-core traditionalist in musical values is going to be revelation to many rasikas. I am aware that BMK Sir had in his prized possession received from his Guru Parupalli Ramakrishna Pantulu garu manuscript of Thyagaraja compositions with notations of Manambuchavadi Venkata Subbiah garu, direct disciple of Thyagaraja.
While telling about learning his compositions, Sanjay Sir disappointed me. BMK Sir is a composer of the stature of Trinity and as a lyricist-Kavi, superior to them in poetic and grammar. Greatest Telugu poets hailed him for this. BMK Sir enlightened me how some of his compositions are in line with Trinity compositional values and also many of his compositions were not composed by Trinity.
Popular sharing is only about greatest maestro's tillanas.
It's a tragedy that both his contemporaries and Gen Next musicians don't sing his great compositions other than tillanas. On That Note I am looking forward a change.

As ever, engrossing episode. We tend to think of Dr. BMK as a iconoclast but it was revealing to learn about his other side - his strict adherence to tradition in certain instances. It is indeed remarkable that the two facets could coexist in the same artist. I wonder if Sanjayji remembers any interaction with Dr. Balamuralikrishna during the recording of "Dharanu Nee Sari" in Varali - the only song Sri Sanjay has sung in the Divyanama Kirtana series produced by AIR and directed by BMK!!

I was lucky to have a good and sustained association with Guruji for over 15 years. You were sitting in the first row in Cleveland Aradhana where Guruji was accompanied by Thiruchi Sankaran Mama where Gamanashrama Pallavi was the highlight. I was always afraid of talking music as a topic with him. It was always cricket, politics from my side and he would gravitate to music and those were the special enjoyable cherished moments for me. He made a special mention of you and said very few who do Vishayam therinju padardhu. I am also a big fan of you. Take care, Sanjay. (A professional brother too 😂).

  • @summushieremiasclarkson4700

What opened my eyes to his celestial genius and knowledge was his comment on the nature of Vakulabharanam. I suddenly understood, with a great pang of sadness, what he implied by the narrowing scope and low standards we impose upon modern carnatic music, it takes more than just repeating the lesson that we are taught as musicians. A great deal of analysis, understanding and minutiae is required to present a true front for the great traditions in the compositions and manodharma that define its history.

We heard that once at Vijayawada though the sabha got huge collection for his concert he did not accept the additional amount . in spite of their repeated request. He asked them to use for the Sabha. . Another incident that in abroad he had advised the organisers to take care of the accompanying artists in the same manner as they did to him. Vidwans also recall his good human nature..
