Julius Erving also known as Dr. J is a retired Professional Basketball player who is best known for winning the first ever ABA Slam Dunk Contest in 1976. He is one of the most decorated NBA players of all time, winning almost every possible accolade, he’s won the NBA championship, ABA Championship, MVP, All star game MVP, All NBA First team, all ABA First team just to name a few, the list goes on. I've seen Doc ( and I don't mean Rivers) play approx 150 times in person beginning with his first team The Virginia Squires, then The Nets, and finally with the 76ers and I can only tell you that Julius was head and shoulders above all other in game dunkers not to mention one of the top ten greatest all around players who ever laced them up!! Many of his greatest dunks are not available to be seen on videos due to the fact that many tapes were stored in warehouses and, due to space limitations, were then taped over to save space and never transferred to video. I will personally attest to the fact that I've witnessed Doc take off from 17 feet out in his ABA days and slam it down - a good 2 feet behind the free throw line!! There were a fair amount of others that standout in my mind but this particular dunk came to my mind first. Naturally a number of his best dunks you've seen if you thoroughly searched on you tube but remember some of his very beat were not!!
Thanks for the info and recollection! 2 ft behind FT... WOW!
I call BS
Dr. J's 1976 dunk is the most impressive. He had to overcome the air resistance from that massive fro!
lol
No
@@richardmanuel9812 yes
It was kinda fun to watch his big fro blow backwards in the wind as he fly down the court.
Naaa Jordan is much better
His Royal Airness. The dribble, the take off, the clutch, the glide, and the OG 2's.
Dr. J did the dunk in 1984 at 34 years of age. That's super impressive.
MJ was 10 years younger when he did his dunk in 1987.
Yea but J didn’t come from free throw he was I. Front of it Jordan was on line but it was super impressive
@@southpaww1check out Dr j’s 1976 foul line dunk much more impressive
Michael Jordan for the double clutch
He stole that move from Doctor J.
@@legendaryTMNICO Dr. J didn't even dribble nor double clutched in the air while Jordan did. Which made Jordan's even more impressive.
No one ever mentions that mj dribbled....
Yeah, Dr. J's done that dunk in a game.
inquizative44 true
And ? Stop worshiping MJ
No one ever mentions that mj take a shit
People literally mention that every time the topic comes up and make it way more important than it is. Have you noticed that defenders don't catch up to faster offensive players just because the offensive player is dribbling? Maybe if you learned how to dribble you wouldn't find it as impressive.
Dr J for being the first ever and for giving the advice MJ to do it
Jordan had about 10 years to improve on Dr. J's, my vote goes to the Doctor.
But Jordan NEVER did improve on Julius cause no one could or ever will!!
MJ did say one time, he tried to be like Dr J when it came to dunking. The doctor is the pioneer who ushered a new ear for basketball flare and style.
Iij!bgguy up
Michael crosses his legs and move his arm down and up and down instead of the stick Dr J did.
I don't know if it's better but definitely more graceful.
Dr j travelled tho
I say both. Doc was the original no doubt that. Jordan took it to a whole another level.
Dr. J dunked straight, MJ spiced up by clutching mid-Air. Air Jordan was born….
Everyone is forgetting that the Dr. basically invented modern day dunking ... no MJ without Dr. J.
EXACTLY
BS. The way MJ did it was legal. Not so with whoever that other guy was. (;
Also street hoopers been slammin' since there was a ball needin' a net!
Who caree someone would’ve eventually. I don’t understand when yall say shi like that as if it wouldve never happened
Jordan by a landslide!! The dribbling alone makes it more impressive! He didn't just run at full speed, he ran to gain while dribbling makes it way more impressive. Add on that he started his leap probably a good 6 inches earlier than Dr. J, and add the tongue for good measure, and it's a no brainer for me
Running full speed when you dribble isn't that hard. Notice when LeBron dribbles coast to coast there aren't a bunch of guys catching up to him.
D Stark yes because of soft rules and players nowadays are not as competetive as before
Dribbling the ball made more impressive? GTFOH.. If Jordan was all that he should of came up with his own dunk but he used Docs to win or he lose. Doc by far for originality. Whether he dribbled on hisself or ran he used Docs dunk he wasnt original
And he jordan was so original right he couldnt come up with his own dunk to win he had to use Docs dunk to win
@@dstark3371 you haven’t watched many dunk contests
No, Julius Erving did this back in 1976, in the 1st ABA Slam Dunk Contest. That's the one you compare MJ to. Michael clearly is a better jumper, but in 1987 he was 24, Dr. J in 1985 was 34 years old, jumping on some old, worn out legs. If ESPN had televised Julius Erving's peak years in basketball, with Erving being the Inventor of the Slam Dunk contest, MJ would not have near the following that he has.
+Chris Gabler Dr. J's 1984 free throw line dunk was actually more impressive than the 1976 dunk. Which is pretty impressive for a 34 year old.
And Julias started closer, from the other free throw line rather than the other side of the court.
Chris Gabler Jordan was dribbling, jumped from about 8 inches further away, and dunked from the free throw line in 1997 for a TV commercial
Just watched Dr. J's 1976 dunk. He had a running start on that dunk too with no dribbling! It was the exact same dunk.
Jordan's dunk was a double clutch and required more skill. Putting that aside Jordan was a lot more than a dunker. Dr. J was nowhere near as good as Jordan. Something tells me having 6 championships and finals MVP'S negates your statement.
Jordan had the finesse to his leaping ability and he just seemed to hang. Out of this world, that guy.
You sayin doc had no hang time
Jordan perfected nothing he a copycat he couldnt come up with anything to beat dominique so he copied Doc no originality
You must be on drugs they always slow the camera down when Michael Jordan leaps making it seems like he's staying up in the air can't you people see this .... Smh
In Dr J's prime Michael Jordan couldn't even scratch the surface of the talent in Dunking ability that Dr Jay had ...
@@sactownsteelers6748 ok bronsexual
I have to give my vote to MJ on this one.
+Pro Hoops Daily It wasn't the '76 dr j dunk though...you're comparing a 20 something year old jordan to a 34 yr old dr j...
The 1984 Dr. J free throw dunk was actually more impressive than the 1976 Dr. J Dunk, Which is a credit to the Dr.
Yep
why dr J was way before his time and also did it first dr J the best ever
MJ dribbled to it, therefore making it more impressive and harder to do. Correct me if im wrong, but i didn't see Julius do the double pump while MJ did.
Doc is the greatest in game dunker that ever lived period - no one begins to compare!!
They say wilt was able to dunk his free throws also and thats why they changed the rules, and there is a video where the flash captures his hand above the backboard by a few inches IN GAME, so if the 60's had the same buzz around dunks, I have no doubt in saying Wilt would have destroyed the league even more with his dunks, and 12 foot rims might have been added to the NBA like his coaches did in college.
what about vince carter dr j was a spectacular and amazing dunker/playet along with mj but carter is just dunking
@@gadaboss I'm from Wilts era and have seen him perform many times in person and, to me, he was easily the best all around player who ever lived! I've seen Wilt, on several occasions, rise and reach his fingers a good 2 inches above the top of the backboard as you have stated in your post! Also, if you have read my other posts here, I have seen Julius play countless times in person and I know Doc was definitely one of the top ten greatest all around players in history!! I played a little myself and coached in High School and was All State 3rd team and All State 2nd team in consecutive years but that was in the 60's. Stay Well all!
i give my vote to MICHAEL JORDAN
Me too! Fir sure...
Yup MJ no doubt
You can never be better than the best Dr j is the man who created spectacular basketball ...
Great video! Quick question, what's the name of the instrumental beat from the Dr. J clip??
The first player's time (if i am correct) from the line till the basket was 2 seconds.
MJ's almost 3. But Jordan's foot is exactly at the line, dr J's few centimetres after.
M Jordan has different style too, more beautiful... It is like he's walking on the air...
P.S. English not my mother-language, my apologies for my poor english.
Great video
Greatness. God bless.
what tleakboro said!!! Docs hops was a bit stronger!!!
+Etrigan Seven Stronger than MJ??? Not sure about that.
@@ProHoopsDaily true Dr.J was the man. Jordan great but overhyped
He ran for momentum lol.
Both are legends.
done watching the full video my friend
Jordan because he dribbled instead of traveling but still Julius erving inspired mike
Jordan, the agility and control.
Michael crosses his legs and move his arm down and up and down instead of the stick Dr J did.
I don't know if it's better but definitely more graceful.
Doc was my favorite player growing up. Everybody wanted to play like the Doc.
Me and Jordan are the same age.
The Doctor, as always.
DR J 🇺🇸 IS THE ONE OF THE GREATEST BASKETBALL 🏀 PLAYER IN HIS DAY'S
I didn't expect to hear Dancehall instrumentals on a basketball video. Big up yourself.
They both flyyyyyyyy! Both great! Always !
mj was dribbling, dr j had more speed...
I meant to say very best not very beat in my previous post. Sorry.
Jordan did it with a cooler looking style. Jordan 🐐
Dr. J was gliding
Dr. J is the Origin Of FT Dunk
a҉ h҉ h҉ S҉ a҉ r҉ a҉ d҉ o҉ ?҉ yeah but mj actually dunked from the line,dr j jumped a good 6 inches in front of it
Dr.J.
He did that dunk when he was over 30 years old...
Hands down Dr.J
its almost effortless for MJ 😁
Dr J all the way
Dr J for sure!
Although MJ crossed his foot over the freethrow line MJ did get more vertical height and slammed it harder 😱
Do you even have to ask... it's like the guy invented dunking, and HE DEFINITELY INVENTED GLIDING & HANGTIME... his air-ness with the win! 🏆
You're talking about Dr. J, right?
I dunno even know dawg frt. MJ is obviously iconic but everything Dr. J did looked so freaking nice.
MJ hands down. The dribble up. The toe just barely on the line (Dr J was further past the line). The DOUBLE PUMP MID AIR HANGTIME!. Just clearly its the jump-man winning this one.
They were both same distance past the free throw line watch again. You can’t just say the copy looks better than the original.
They were both actually very good dunks
he will be remembered
This comparison is a no-brainer: Jordan's is better because of the dribble, The farther leap (even if it is just by inches), the double pump, and more flair with the dunk. Having said that, Dr. J started it and the Doctor still has the greatest dunk of all time (Rock The Baby).
dr j was the first one to dunk from the free throw line mic copy doc
Jumping high vs flying !
MJ the goat .
The Doctor created that in 1976, and was still doing that in 1984, when he was 34. MJ, here in his prime, was surely a bit more athletic, still we should remember that he did that dunk also as a homage to the player who inspired him.
Who got the footage from Doc's 76 dunk?
'76 dunk was not as good as '84 even though he was much younger. czcams.com/video/9YQlcsjrItc/video.html
With all the PEDs in today's sports we may see some leave the 3 point line
Lol never will happen, maybe in the far future, but ill never see it in my lifetime.
Jordan actually jumped further behind the line if you look closely. Erving was in front of it.
Dr J 100% he was original.. MJ got the idea to do it when he looked over and saw DR J in the stands so he imitated..he imitated all Dr J’s moves
MJ look like he was flying
Doc did this in like 76 and then in the 80's lol
MJ CAUSE THE TOUNGE
Mjs one is more iconic and dr js one was impressive
0:40 it remembers me something on my shoes ..;
The doctor is in the house.
drj aba was crazy
Dr j makes it look easy but people forget they are the same height
My vote goes to Dr.J without any doubt. He was older than MJ when he did this, and ran a shorter distance than MJ. Dr.J was also original.
G-Track Productions age ain’t nothing but a number
I WAS VERY IMPRESS WITH DR J HE DID THIS IN HIS LATE 80"S MUCH OLDER THAN JORDON HE IS THE ORIGINATOR FROM BACK IN THE 70'S IN THE FIRST DUNK CONTEST WHEN HE FLEW FROM THE LINE DR.J ALL THE WAY!
Michael Jordan sin duda alguna :)
De acuerdo
dr.j
Zach Lavine, Serge Ibaka, MJ, Dr J. My vote would have to be Zach Lavine
mj gets bonus points for dribbling
What's that song beat at the end
+JAY KING YT Its the Instrumental from Hold Yuh by Gyptian
Dr
Dr. J didnt have to dribble because of his big hands. Also Doc did it from foul line to foul line he didnt have to go all the back to the inbound line.
Doc all the way.
Give this one to MJ cause he dribbled
I will give my vote to dr. J because I think he did it when he was 35 years old
+Touy The one posted in this video was from '84, but he did it again in '85 when he was 35, not as good, but still pretty impressive for an old guy.
thanks for the info man
He is the man
they were both well over the line
Doc all day, Doc got footage of him Dunkin’ on dudes from dam near the foul line in games, never saw mike do that & NOBODY GOT MORE POSTERS ON CENTERS THAN DOC, NOBODY!
MJ has it. He has style and goes smooth. Dr. J's I honestly thought would look better than it did. MJ is the GREATEST EVER!!!
MJ obviously.. he didn't even have to travel.
your arguement doesnt make sense
He didn't travel. How doesn't that make sense?
He bounced the ball buddy...
You're talking to the other guy right?
yeah
Mj for style
Double pump by Jordan.. Wow. Goat
What is double clutch?
DR J ALL DAY
Still, He travelled. Fail.
serege ibaka actualy jumped from the free throw line like ACTUALLY
Dr. J's best years were in The ABA.
Jordan
DR J ALL THE WAY
dr j did it in a pair of converse
Jordan Did It In His Air Jordan Sneakers
How does Michael stay in the air like that ?
jordan by a few inches
Gotta go to Dr J be hind the line, but gotta love michael
+Michael Padilla I thought Michaels was from further back, Dr. J's foot was in front of the line.
Both sweet, but you know who was first! check out 1984 Dr.J and I believe the angles bad but I think he's got him!
Dr. J by a mile
Mj dribbles the ball. That’s impressive
Jordan was pretty with it but the Doc man.
I love mj
Clearly MJ...
So dr j did it first😏 dr j will always be one of the best to play the game
Props to MJ. Even though Dr.J did it first MJ actually dribbled the ball where as Dr.J ran with the ball full steam. The nod goes to MJ for that.
ur rite mj dribbled if u ever played ball to run fast enuff to make that jump and maintain that dribble isent easy
Bheezy999 Doc was doin these dunks in game you don't have to dribble in a contest
