Thanks Chris, and also Josh; always a pleasure to learn from experienced, respectful and informative folks.
Mr Chickadee is both a real artist with the saw, and a very good teacher. Thanks.
As a teenager, I had a saw sharpening business in NW Arkansas. I don't remember ever sharpening a crosscut saw but did lots of handsaws and circular saws on a Foley handsaw machine and a Belsaw circular saw grinder. Having used a crosscut since then, I can appreciate the skill level and knowledge required for a smooth, quick cutting saw.
Cant beat those Quality 100 year old Saws👍 no Gas/ no fumes / light weight! Great Video 🇺🇸
Best explanation of the sharpening process on the internet. And we get to hear Mr Chickadee for the very first time!
I enjoyed this very much. It has been 25+ years since I last stood in front of a saw vise, not to mention running a misery whip. It brought back a lot of memories. It seems I have forgot as much as I thought. FYI...Back in the day saw blanks were rolled out( as opposed to modern blanks being stamped out) so the spines could be a thinner gauge than the teeth and rakers. The thinner spines aided in less binding. A well oiled wooden scabbard to cover the teeth and rakers will help prevent damage (leave enough play so as not to remove the "set"), We always used old small fire hose slit open with several ties to cover the teeth and rakers. One last tip from an old wilderness tech, Always carry your tools on the down hill side of the trail. Happy chopping.
Thank for the guidance. I just bought my first, and now have realized,(as with axes), there’s more to it than just having one. Mr. Chickadee you are a national treasure! Thanks for putting this together. Liked and subscribed.!
Great video. The sawyers manual that was referred to was a godsend and enabled me to learn the process. Swayging the rakers was probably the scariest, but once you figure it out, there is a rythem to it. Since I learned, I have found several very in-depth videos that have confirmed my ability.
We are glad that you two are working together. 👍
I have one very similar that has been waiting for my attention for a couple of years, this video may give me motivation. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve watched josh stuff on utube he’s amazing it wonderful to see someone with old time skills and knowledge it makes you stand back and really appreciate how tough those men out of the past were
Great job guys and thank you for the lesson on tuning and sharpening a saw. I had never seen this and Enjoyed the video.
AWESOME video! I have one of them setting tools, & an old crosscut saw. I had often wondered what that funny looking tool was that they threw in when I bought said saw was for! Now I know not only what it's for, but also how to use er.
Now that's good information, thanks for sharing.
Everything that was demonstrated here also applies to smaller hand saws. Very nice presentation!
It is nice to watch and listen inteligent people 🙂
Good stuff! Great info, thanks!
I found an old saw like this at a garage sale for 20 bucks. It didn't have a handle with it and I don't have the skill to make one, but you showed me how to get the rust off and sharpen it, so thanks for that, much appreciated.
Great memories of cutting logs at my grandpa's house with a two man saw...man we used to get that saw to sing.
It was great to hear Mt chickadee talking! Great to hear that heavy pitting isn't a major problem as I picked one up that has pitting. Subscribed to you both!
