According to the creators of the Addams family, Thing is a part of a eldritch horror, so horrific that no one could look at it longer than 2 seconds, Thing was the only part of it that you could look at
Actually thing is the hand of a main character in another show that the creators of Wednesday made. The hand is stitched up because the main character who had the hand got it hurt a lot. The hand is somehow moving without any magic. Or anyone controlling it.

Yeah I heard that the hand has a demon in it and keeps moving on its own even if it's still attached to the owners arm that's why the owner of the hand decided to cut it off hoping that it will stop moving but it didn't instead it wonder around and met Wednesday
The real backstory of Thing:
So, the producer of the original Addams Family movie had another movie they directed. One of the characters, a man, lost his hand in that movie. My guess is that one of the Addams’ found the hand somewhere and decided to put it back together and make it alive, creating the first moments of Thing.
The addams family think he's a long lost ancestors hand but doesn't know where he originated
Idk someone else in the comments said thing came from the butler but the Netflix changed that presumably because it was a more child friendly remake

The Addams family doesn't even know who's hand thing was xd. It's been mentioned a few times. But this was cute.
I know thing doesn't have a cannon age but he's gotta be way older than Wednesday as in the original Addams Family, she was 4 or maybe 8 at the time and Thing was still around. Thing is basically a childhood friend and all that.
