    Exercising should be a key component to keeping a sharp mind. If we eat, then we should exercise. I, like many, have a morning routine. A slight foot rotation, one way then the other and then pull each leg up to chest, straighten up then rotate out to side and back in, all before I get out of bed. Make a pot of Joe, feed cats, then out on the back deck to do many articulating movements, each limb, joint. I follow a Tia Chi method, then Tia Chi flow routine. Into the home gym, hand by hand with body weight 30 sec., then bands. Morning walk, 4-6 miles, back into gym for 4 sets of 6-8 weight stations, 5 min of rowing on concept 2, 7 min on the elliptical then out for a 25 mile gravel bike ride. I am going on 69. Truly must keep ourselves as fit should we be able to when those years start creeping up on us. Like anything else, we must prioritize the time, no one else will do it for you. One thing I have as a mantra is. If I am not healthy then I can not be the foundation for my family, community, etc..

    Lots of advice for workouts. I like the " climb the mountain, don't fall down it". I workout weekly to stay fit and keep weight down. Thanks!

    I'm the same age as Paul. What I hate about exercising at this age is that it's all about stopping muscle degradation. If I worked out this hard in my 30s, I'd be looking like a bodybuilder. 😀
    For me, one thing that is key is daily stretching and balance exercises. That balance thing kinda came outa nowhere, so now I commit to working on it daily. Otherwise in the shop gym It's the Muay Thai bag, speed bag, and good old "Bob" for the hard punches, and I have a 150 yard circular drive with an uphill next to the shop, so I break up the boxing sets with 150 yard sprints. Then I do a TRX workout to finish. I don't do a ton with free weights, since I live on a farm, so am doing farmer's carry every day whether I want to or not. I also hit the exercise bike and the same C2 rower as Paul. The latter two are in the house in the mancave, and they get used a lot more in the Winter when I don't feel like working out in the shop when it's 15deg outside. I also run a weekly 100-7 drill on my home range.
    Also, hat tip to Paul from a previous video, where he recommended horse mats for the gym. I had been using those stupid square gym mats that you can buy at Walmart or wherever, and they just fall apart. I went to the farm store a couple of weeks ago and got those horse mats, and they are the bomb as a gym floor.

    Nice work! As an official old man, I prefer the whole body, functional workouts now. Kind of like PE class everyday when I grew up. Kettlebells and Battleropes are incredible. Squats everyday keep me moving. Thanks for showing us your routine.

    I love lifting high reps with dumbbells and plates 3 days a week, and 200 reps each muscle I target, which takes me a hour fourty five to 2 hours. 20 mins on my elliptical, 40 mins on a stationary bike, I jump rope for 15 mins a day, kick, punch, elbow my punching bag practicing muay thai, followed by shadow boxing for 15 mins and practice escrima 12 strikes for another 15 mins is my routine. Not as fancy as Paul's workout. I'm saving up for a rowing machine, and a Roman chair.

    Great video. Ran into gym squatters this week.

    • @locophoto6881
      @locophoto6881 Před měsícem +1

      I’ve run into gym squatters many times over the years and almost always they’ll let you work in or just go squat somewhere else if you’re just nice and ask with respect not judgement, and if they’re a dufus then I’d just wait til they’re done with whatever set they’re doing and just tell them don’t ask ok good set now my turn to get in a quick set and I break eye contact so it’s not a challenge …if they want to escalate it then the comment just depends on bigger picture …sometimes better to give them space for this day but make it clear not going to be ok with it next time we need the same machine and you’re just doing no work workouts in a membership club where we’re all members. Never had an issue, especially if they see you see work hard and respect your physique or intensity or person or background. Talking accomplishes many things when done with Grace and sharing respect but with a backbone and a joke.

    Like everything you teach. Effective, simple, and robust. I got kicked out a Plant Fitness for wearing a CSAT shirt ("The I Don't judge" one). Question to Paul. What do you think of bench, deadlifts, and squats?

    • @BillHesse
      @BillHesse Před měsícem +1

      No Paul of course, but I am a physical therapist who works with tactical athletes and high school athletes at my own practice. General rule of thumb is there aren’t good or bad movements as long as you respect gradual loading over time and if your body has particular limitations due to injury etc. while one person might be capable of deficit deadlifts, another may need to lift the bar with some plates to remain pain free. If you do find yourself in pain then a competent PT who works in the area of sport performance is a good place to start.
      If benching, squats and deadlifts didn’t work they wouldn’t be used at the elite level. Just tailor the load, volume and range of motion to your individual needs. That can be an 80 year old woman doing sit to stands for fall prevention or someone in combat arms doing a 5x5 in the squat rack for injury prevention and enhanced rucking performance.

    • @paulhowe5863
      @paulhowe5863 Před měsícem +4

      Thanks for both replies. I have a system I have been using for 40 + years to keep strong and avoid injury. I treat upper body and lower body with the same frequency of exercise. As for squats, I know there is a safe way to probably do them, but I have run into too many soldiers that blew out knees from the HS Gym coach. They had to take a handful of Motrin to do a 5-mile run. In short, I have avoided squats and the free weight bench. I prefer rucking for my leg strength and the bench press machines for my upper body. Now I just do push-ups. I will be doing a string of videos shortly ranging from programs or schedules to intensity, upper body/lower body frequency, target weights, sequencing exercises, stretching, etc. I will let everyone know when it drops. Again, this is what works for me. I am also a firm believer in seeking out Physical Trainers/Therapists when starting out or when repairing injuries. Some people make their money first in life and then try and salvage their bodies after the fact. It is never too late to get on a solid program. Also, learn to love the ruck...

      @@BillHesse thank you for sharing your expertise and experience. It's refreshing to make a comment on CZcams and come back to find others have taken the time to share high value information. You advice aligns with my experience in seeking out competent trainers and PT. Switching to RDLs, for example, has with my build and injury set given me most of the deadlift reward with minimal risk.

    • @locophoto6881
      @locophoto6881 Před měsícem

      Physical therapists are not who to listen to regarding lifting movements they don’t do…I’ve trained with world class (2nd in the world) power lifters and state champion bodybuilders and the bottom line is truly …everything brings results of one form or another if done with proper form and intensity and frequency with good good and good sleep …,but …it absolute fact that deadlifts produce great gains and great injuries in unpredictable ratios …I personally don’t do them and know many who have wrecked their back doing them. You’re not an elite level athlete looking to be sharper than the sharpest edge …so just find the progress you want toward fitness , strength, and aesthetics from experimenting with safe movements but put your heart into the intensity of fighting the weight in those last reps without sacrificing too much form …and results will come. You get out what you put in.

      @@locophoto6881 bro, not every PT is like every doctor. I have my people work hard and your comment some how comes off as if my many years of practice working with athletes somehow means less than a personal trainer. If I’m incorrect my apologies but it seems like you’ve not hay the right person in your corner. I absolutely have my patients deadlift and do other things specific to their goal. Recommending people see unlicensed professionals is about as good having an infantry guy teach CQB over a tier 1 guy like Paul. Sometimes you’ll win and some times you lose but I’ll hand my hat on the highest level of training and experience.
