Best bit of painting advice for starting out; two thin coats. Water down your paint on a palette until you get a smooth consistency and paint the first coat, let it dry and paint the second coat.

The painting is really good to my eyes. You learned some lessons from it too now you know to paint the more finer details last. From what i know from watching star wars legion videos years ago is that you always start with a base layer of the most common colour on the character.
Some years ago i was really REALLY close to getting into star wars legion wich is the star wars equivalent of warhammer. I ultimately never did as I had already had a large lego star wars collection it would make more sense to build an army in that. So i did just that.
Seeing this video though i might reconsider getting into legion or warhammer it looks really fun and seeing you talk about it so fondly is really encouraging. Ill be following your warhammer yourney with great interest.

    • @EzrasJunkyard
      @EzrasJunkyard  Před měsícem +1

Benjaman! What an inspiring comment, this made me so happy, thank you so much buddy, or should I say… Lego Lord.
Thank you for the pro tip with the base layer being the most common colour of the figure, now I think about it, that’s really obvious and I don’t know why I didn’t do that! Me and Eve got enthusiastic in the shop and got some spray paint we wanted to use 😂
I get what you mean about already having a collection and that’s deffo put me off starting something new in the past. But in the end I just had to make the time, you never know what life is going to throw at you, so I wanted to honour the craving I was getting to collect them again.
You’ll have to let me know if you ever make the leap and start collecting something new! I’d love to keep posted on that.

woo hoo! welcome back to the hobby!
generally it's easier to work inside out - start with the skin and work outwards through the layers.
Orruk warclans are actually two separate armies in one book. Kruleboys are the muddy swamp boyz, they get some decent ranged troops and a few swamp monsters. Ironjaws are bigger, more armoured and have the big pigs etc.
either way have fun, just around the corner near Woking

  • @blakearius
    @blakearius Před měsícem +1

Welcome, I started about 6 months ago but was doing alot of art stuff before that. Things I've learnt...
The warhammer store is so nice because it is literally an advertisement for warhammer, they will rip you off though with their subpar paints and tools, still useful for contrast paint, primer and playing games.
If your going Orks, keep all your sprews as its very useful for making ork themed terrain. Also just noticed.. you left obvious mould lines on the orcs face.. always spend the extra time using the back of a hobby knife to remove these as they really ruin the model. Noticable gaps in skin/armour are worth filling in and sanding it is also worth the time. Either by making sprew goo from a mix of cut sprew bits and acetone/hobby cement, using green stuff(from the warhammer shop) or miliput with iso alcohol.
Practice thinning your paints with water on some primed plastic, citadel paints are quite thick, basecoat/ layering /glazing and washing all have different consistencies of water added and all have a useful purpose. In terms of applying washes.. yours is sadly a mess.. the general idea is to wash into the recesses and then paint over top to bring back most of the model - That is technically GW's system of painting.. but tbh it's bad.. it wont teach you how to paint, and it actually can take more time than just painting well having to fix up the 'mess' that washes leave. Rogue hobbies just put out a great video painting 2 orks comparing the GW system and her own and I highly recommend watching it.
My other recommendations go out and get all the paints you need for the project your working on. Either use the Citadel Colour system where you get base colors and layer highlight colours(Dont buy Citadel.. Game color, model color, and AK 3rd gen are all solid paint choices, '2 Thin Coats' will have better quality matching colors) Scale75 also have the best metallic paints IMO. Down the track you can try a single pigment primary colour set and learn to mix your paints to get the desired tone(I recommend Golden soflat or Kimera.
Consider buying a wet pallet, Redgrass is great but there are cheaper ones avaliable, or there is a homemade recipe which can work. It will thin your paints though.. for instance AK is pretty much usable as base-coat straight from wet pallet with no added thinning. It will save you time on your workflow and save you wasted paint. It's invaluable.
You will need some more synthetic brushes, just don't waste your money on GW overpriced crap. And consider investing in at least a single size 1 Sable Kolinsky brush because it'll be the only brush that wont hook its tip after a few uses, will last you much longer and make painting easier. As long as you save it for layering/highlights, keep it rinsed often and cleaned with brush soap between uses. Don't get the smallest brush size 0/3 like I did as it dries to quick to be useful... a bigger brush with a point is still as useful anyway. Also never use washes, contrast or metallics with a sable brush if you want them to last.
Learn some basing techniques.. its 1 third of the model and it requires little skill to make. You can go cheap and build it with trigs and dirt from outside with PVA, throw on some flock, bushes and pigment powder, or you can buy pre-designed bases to paint(and also do all those things mentioned too). The key technique to know is drybrushing white and grey over black to make rocks. Also if you want to implement speedy high quality Dry brushing for models and try contrast techniques check out Artis Opus for the best resource on that, his techniques are simply the best way for amateurs to create amazing looking models.
Also get feedback from reddit, very passionate communities there for minipainting. or feel free to ask me anything.
Anyway that's all I got.. Good luck on your journey.

Ive recently started warhammer myself and I went through a very similar process. I also have a 'obsessive' personality so I definitely relate to that feeling of butterflies when starting a new hobby. Orruks are a great choice. If you are looking for your next box you could see if there are still any dominion boxes available. Those are the previous edition's launch box featuring stormcast vs orruks and got discounted massively. Stormbringer magazine could also be a fun way to collect orruks. Have fun and I'll look forward to your warthammer content!

@@EzrasJunkyard I started with collecting slaves to darkness, but I have bad impulse control and tend to start new projects before I finish current ones so Ive already got some stuff for other factions and even a few 40k units 😅. Currently I am working on the skaven from the skaventide box, which are really cool looking models. One of my goals is to get good enough at painting to paint Archaon (the ridiculously big centerpiece model for slaves to darkness) which my partner gifted me for my birthday.

Do people sell half of boxes with the army you want in it? Rather than a full box where you’d be left with figures you weren’t that keen on painting / collecting?

Awesome! Welcome to the hobby! I myself got back into it two years ago and your explaining of things really took me back!
A few things (and some low-hanging fruit):
-Yes, technicallly some models dont strictly need glue to be assembled, this is called easy-to-build. It is still a good idea to use plastic glue for these, cut off the stubs with a hobby knife and use glue und the edges of the parts. That way your models will fit together much more nicely and you wont have as many big gaps between parts
-You really need, yes, need, to clean of the mould lines on the models. Scraping them away with a hobby knife or filing them off is a quick method. Do this before you assemble the model. It will look much more professionally build and also the wash will not pool next to the mould line, making it even more obvious
-After the wash step, try to paint over the more raised sections again with the basecolor while leaving the wash in the recesses, this is called layering and it will brighten up the figure and make it pop!
-a quick dry brush (pretty easy and beginner-friendly technique) will provide a nice yet simple to achieve highlight effect!
-never buy directly at the Warhammer store. Worst prices ever! Instead, go online and find stores that sell gw products, i dont know which are the best in the UK though as i am on mainland europe. You can also consider looking for second-hand deals on ebay, i personally mostly buy second hand and i have gotten alot of amazing deals over the years
-Citadel paints are NOT the best paints for warhammer, far from it actually. There are a lot of way better paint lines out there today, i personally would suggest lookign at Duncan Rhodes Two Thin Coats, silky smooth and great great great coverage and pigmentation. Getting good paints and tools, especially if you havnt bought alot of Citadel yet, is SO worth it and will make hobbying faster, easier and more fun!!!
-consider getting a wet palette. GW doenst offer one, so you will either have to buy online or even make your own, there are tutorials out there. Quick to do and makes working with correctly thinned paint alot easier as the palette will keep your paint from drying while painting
I could go on and on and on but i think this is enough for now, hope this will help!!

Hello lad, great first video on AOS and welcome to the hobby!
Couple things that might help you improve:
    - Typically it's best to paint from inside out, so exactly as you say, skin first, then cloth, then armour, getting more refined as you go
    - The old saying is "layer, wash, highlight" it's a really easy method to get you going and there are a bunch of videos online about it
    - You'd be amazed how much a good base can really elevate a figure, might be worth investing in some grass tufts (gamer grass have great products) and trying out different texture paints (stirland mud is my go to)
There are a lot of great channels to refer to, but warhipster and duncan rhodes have a bunch of really accessible tutorials, also worth watching guys like Marco Frisoni or Trovarion for some inspiration from golden demon winners.
Overall, great return to the hobby - I collect Kruleboyz myself and they are super fun to paint - can't wait to see the next update!

I also really appreciate the channel referrals because I’m so new, I’m just not aware of any creators so this is a massive help.
I think I can do way better on the bases too you’re so right, I’m going to invest in some grass tufts and perhaps I could go a little heavier on the mud and perhaps colour the base rim brown or something! Lots to think about.

Or have you watched videos to help? Some advice I’ve been given is amazing, but others I’ve not even really known what they are talking about yet. I’m so new! Hope that’s normal haha.

@@EzrasJunkyard The seaside life, cant beat it! And thankyou its a 30 man tournament so will be super cool to meet tonnes of fellow nerdy LOTR gamers!
Okay good, hard to tell when someone types something sometimes haha And yeah I was going to go with the Seraphon army if I did go Sigmar but yeah! I think honestly the complexity put me off a bit. Wanted to jump back in instead of having to learn a whole new world. If I am playing vs Gandalf I can guess what he can do ect.
Yeah maybe its from the weathertop set I think Hes got his arm outstretched with sword in one hand and torch in the other! I have a lot of random units to be honest. Will definitely end up selling a few to fund the main armies im building.
Well so far I have only painted dead of dunharrow (Which if you google they are just ghostly boys). So it wasn't too complex. The Army im going with now I used the CitidelColour app on my phone which is cool as you search up the unit your trying to paint and GW will tell you the colours and the order to paint it!! But yeah a mix of what people say, youtube videos ect. I have learnt "dry brushing" which is a cool technique for bringing out detail. But there is other paint techniques that people talk about which is a foreign language to me like "slap chop" which I am going to learn about next!
If you want I can give you my discord, will be easier to chat.

Hell yes to meeting more nerdy LOTR gamers. I saw a really cool lord of the rings cap in a shop on holiday, I thought it was an original from back in the day, just a black cap with the gold logo on - EPIC but… just a crappy bad quality remake. Surprised it didn’t say Lord of the Rigs on it.
Seraphom would have been really cool. But honestly it sounds like LOTR is the way forward for you and you’re already so familiar, no need to stress about learning loads of new things.
At the moment for me, I just plan on painting and collecting a cool looking army, but im sure one day I will learn how to play and actually want to use the army I’ve created! Because I’ve not played ever, I imagine what ever game I play first, I will just really enjoy because it’s new!
Anyway, I’m taking up far too much of your time sorry! Discord would be awesome. There is a link in the description or over on my CZcams page and I can be found there! We have a warhammer section now and feel free to message me privately whenever you want 😃👍🏼

    • @reno239
      @reno239 Před měsícem +1

@@EzrasJunkyard the old world is a successor to the old warhammer fantasy world, which was killed in 2014-2015 by GW due to bad business practices making the game stagnant (it was then replaced by AOS which was riddled with problems and people angry at it for destroying a game they spent 20+ years playing)
In lore it takes place before the original fantasy, and that’s about it, but gameplay wise it’s a bit more complex that AOS, requiring more strategic placing of your troops and learning how to flank enemies. Your own troops rank up on square bases and March as so.
It’s (in my opinion) better than AOS cuz I don’t like the look of new models and prefer the old hand sculpted ones the old world uses, and I also dislike how…easy aos is to play, it’s much more of a kids game in the simplicity of rules compared to aos.

In the old days you could use models for decades but GW has a new business model that involves changing their models and rules every few years. Some models become unusable depending on rules changes. If you're just collecting to paint then it doesn't matter, if you're collecting to play I would recommend looking at other companies who support their customers.
