I Broke My Computer Over Calculus

  • EDIT: Idk why I have to say this every time I have something that even remotely resembles an opinion, but yes I know this isn't the best way to study calculus - I had 3 months and 4 other placement tests to study for, though, so what else was I supposed to do? I'm not going to fight Newton or Leibnitz or Fubini bc of my placement test disaster, so pleeeeeeease stop defending the honor of Calculus in the comments.

I mean at least you didn't get hit by a truck. Or lose a 20,000 dollar scholarship because of mishandled medical records and anti vaxxers.
I had to redo my entire freshman year (and fail it again) after I lost a month's worth of memory and woke up paralyzed the day before finals. The neurologist said that nothing was wrong (oh yeah, then tell me why I can't fucking move!). This was after going through the IB program, graduating a year early, and getting my credits refused. I had to go back home and recover, build myself a robotic exoskeleton with one hand just to go to physiotherapy, and then I took that semester again only to get hit by a truck on the way to finals. Then I had to recover again!
At this point I literally go into severe depression and spend the next 18 months in intense physiotherapy only to find out that the uni wouldn't accept me because I had gotten a semester of Fs (due to getting hit by a truck) and so I went to a polytech once I had something that could handle a pencil that wasn't my teeth. I graduated the polytech and I try to go for my degree again.
But lo and behold the Japanese Death God struck again. And then halfway through the year I have to go home and recover AGAIN. At least this time I was so filled with rage like some intelligence based barbarian that I wrote all my finals despite suffering from extreme vertigo while the letters were swirling. This time though I missed out on 1 lab, and so I didn't make the qualification for lab hours. And then 2020 happened.
I can handle redoing courses. But having to redo them 5 times is a bit much.

Math Prof here who teaches calculus....first this sucks! I'm really hoping you were able to contact the school and explain what happens and get some leniency. Anyways, what should we do with the notation problem? For myself, I always try to focus on the big picture, the geometric intuition and foundational concepts in my videos. That's what is important, and what I hope my students will take away. I'd be pretty bummed if someone went through my course and their main complaints focused on things like the notational confusion and technical distinctions like connected vs simply-connected. It's true, they are a sort of silly thing that is part of the math canon like how 'they're', and 'their', and 'there' are part of the English language and this annoying thing everyone has to memorize, but I never want it to be close to the main point. And one of the challenges is a lot of things are the way they are because......that is the way they are historically done, and then for me as a prof even if I wanted to try and come up with better notation, I'd then be frustrating my students as I'd be using different notation from their textbooks! No winning this battle, sadly:D

Funnily enough I’m going back through everything right now to get a more complete understanding and it’s really interesting. @Swaroop Handral I felt the same with physics. The exam blue balled me and didn't let me submit (didn't even give me a popup saying it TRIED to submit)
The questions I got were easy, since I had just finished studying for the exam. I carried every lab, I had the highest test scores (multiple choice and free response)
And then I go for the make up, and then I get questions about springs and oscillation (which by the way I had to self study for because COVID nuked us right at the start of the unit, and the entire district was in anarchy trying to figure out how distance learning worked... I didn't have access to the textbook because my school doesn't actually have any to give either)
And I ended up getting a 3. for the class I was most confident in.

I heavily disagree with the point made about mathematicians, variables, and definitions. First off there is no reason to be upset about a lack of diversity in symbols because 1. There are a lot more ideas than letters 2. There is a lot of diversity in math symbols the higher you go (like you have your letters but then you have 3 different fonts (blackboard for important sets, caligra for sets of sets or just a set of abstract things, frak for anything lie algebra related, and scr if you're feeling fancy)as well as greek letters (upper and lowercase) but you also have 15 symbols for certain types of relations most of the time math is done with words and logic and calculations or only put in when necessary. 3. As long as symbols that have different meanings are used in different contexts you should be fine. And again with the thing about how many types of "domains" you have is really just slight alterations and additions to a standard definition of a domain. Open domain is still a domain just with the added stipulation it is an open set. A lot of these terms like open, closed, bounded, smooth, ect... appear in higher math so perhaps they're just trying to get you to get used to the idea that a blob in space can be interesting and can represent a lot of different ideas. While I do agree that most of this isn't necessary for an intro multivariable calculus course for people who probably aren't interested in doing theorhetical math, I do see what the book is trying to do (you were probably using stewarts calculus which is standard for both math and non math majors).

Precal is so just advanced algebra you already know most of the concepts like a function and the different equation types. Calc is not only difficult to do but it’s also hard to understand what you are doing. Basically calculus is a way to take an equation and find an equation that maps the slope at any point along a curved line as slope on non straight lines is ever changing. Then you have to learn how to undo that and then you have to learn how do and undo it in 3 demotions.

Your problems with the actual administration of the test aside, if you're struggling to take a placement test then you probably do actually need to retake the classes. This sounds more like an ego problem than anything else. If you're in a major that requires multivariable calculus (i.e. anything that needs community college calculus 3 or 4 level for transfer students) then you're going into a science major and actually need to know how to do that material, not just pass a single AP exam and call it good. A placement test isn't going to kick you out of the school or anything. It just determines what your skill level is and what class you should be taking when you go into college. If you want to study the material on your own and test out of it, that's your own business, not a fault of the school's system. In fact, seeing that you took the AP and passed and yet still struggled with the placement test, this is probably a really good argument in favor of the placement test if anything.

This actually happened to me as well. I didn't get 12 5s, but my program forces everyone to start at the beginning. So I have to take calculus again along with all the classes I got dual enrollment credits for. Free As but learning calculus again is so mind-numbing.

Oh and my laptop's hard drive developed bad sectors a few days ago, so... yeah... Hopefully I'm not watching my future.

I might find myself in a similar situation to yours in a couple of weeks. I'm trying to transfer to a uni in London after a doing my first year of maths and I'm afraid the online assessments I did might not be taken as seriously as if the summer exams that were cancelled. Gonna start reviewing the material tomorrow 😬

welcome to the rest of life man. you sound just like me and my slow descent into becoming extremely jaded at the entire structure of education. it only gets worse in college, as real pressures mount and the realities of debt sink in to a smart mind. i really really wish you luck, i dropped out after 2 years and sinking 60k into uc santa cruz. i escape the hellhole of the state i grew up in, only to find myself in insurmountable debt. and finding out how little any of my hard work really mattered in the grand scheme of things
