@@mistermozartx9414 I don't think people clapped because they couldn't hold it anymore. I think it was because many of them didn't know the piece and thought that it was the ending. And it is totally acceptable, many of them might not have heard the piece, because you had to go to concerts to listen to music at that time. We are so lucky to be able to listen to the music we want.

This is the best performance of this piece ever. It is so natural. It is just astonishing that Zimerman was only 18 at the time. His fluent ease and relaxation at the piano, his ability to sense just how long to let notes resonate, and his elastic and seemingly limitless virtuosity, are enthralling. If it was possible to have a competition between all the winners of the Chopin competition as they were at the time of their victories, Zimerman would win - easily (and that includes Pollini, Argerich, Ohlsson etc)

I like this rendition, you know why? Because Zimmerman is one of those rare pianists (along with Sviatoslav Richter) who could seemingly connect whole heartedly with the music they were playing.
Meaning, their ego or other intrusive thoughts didn’t get in the way of expressing the music.
It’s like playing without thinking about the audience is there. Just you and the music.

As a pianist myself, the only two pianists I listen to when I want inspiration for playing Chopin are Horowitz and Zimerman. Rubinstein, the obvious choice, feels extremely generic to me. The others just rush through everything as if they have a train to catch. Their respective performances of the 4th ballade provide complete commitment to the two ways of approaching the piece, one so creatively thoughtful as to create another world you feel like you're visiting, the other organic and spontaneous and unbelievably cruel. Only Horowitz can play the coda the way it was meant to be played. Zimerman comes close but owns the rest of the piece. If you've heard Zimerman live he makes you see and hear things in pieces you never knew were there to point where you nod your head as if to say "now I understand". He impresses because he continued to evolve. Here he is all talent and exciting showman and already displaying his greatness, but not yet the artist he would become. If you've ever seen Horowitz live, well, nothing can describe. Sorry for posting about VH here. I just can never post one without the other when discussing Chopin. The two sides of a musical personality. I love this video and I can never get enough KZ.
