The Faceless Horror: Unmasking the Entity in The Exorcist

- The Exorcist is widely considered one of the scariest movies of all time, and much of its terror can be attributed to the mysterious entity that possesses young Regan. While Regan gets plenty of screen time, the true face of the entity is only glimpsed briefly, leaving audiences to speculate about its identity and motivations. According to the movie's mythology, the entity is Pazuzu, a demon king from Assyrian and Babylonian lore. However, Pazuzu's appearances in the film are so quick and subtle that many viewers miss them entirely. In fact, the image of Pazuzu's ghastly white face is only shown for a single frame, twice during the film. Director William Friedkin intended for this image to be subliminal, meaning that viewers are unnerved by it without even realizing what they saw. This technique was highly effective, as audiences were left with a sense of unease and terror that lingered long after the movie ended.
- Krátké a kreslené filmy
This type of subtle imagery needs to return. No loud jump scares or mentions, just subliminal and unnerving
Agreed. This movie literally haunted me when I saw it for the first time. Always hated/loved the face flashing. So simple.
I agree with the fact that it's an amazing film. But the thing is that it's not scary

Just because you aren't scared by it doesn't mean it's not scary.
The first omen is like that that’s out now
Imagine the amount of nightmares people had just by seeing that face once. Insane directing.
In my opinion, that one shot of the demons face is the most horrifying shot in any sort of cinema, im a grown ass adult and I still have a hard time with that one shot
Fun fact: the actress who played Pazuzu also played Richie Cunningham's date on an episode of Happy Days. 😊
You don't say 😊
I remember seeing it for the first time and rewinding and keeping it on my screen for like 20 min
Pazuzu is actually shown 3 times, 1- in Regan's room when she is twitching, 2- when Damien is running to his mother in his dream, and 3- when Chris, Regan's mother, comes home and the lights are flickering in the kitchen and his image is shown in the background
5 times actually. Mom in the kitchen, Reagan in the hospital, reagan at the psychiatrist office, the priests dream, and at the end just before the priest jumps out the window
@@jordanmcquay9077 oh damn I can't believe I forgot the hospital scene. I have to rewatch it regarding the psychs office.
@@jordanmcquay9077 then with yours and one of mine it's actually six
@williamjamesayers7719 actually it's still 5. I made a mistake. You're right in how I forgot to include yours but in the end before the priest jumps out the window he sees his mother, not the demon (though that was probably the demon fucking with the priest)
@@jordanmcquay9077 exorcist believer looks incredible!
the demon face is a hot 25 year old Eileen Dietz lol. crazy how amazing the make up is
I see it straight away it’s in the kitchen when she turns the light on
Saw that movie once and THATS all!! That was enough for me!!
The Face scared the crap out of me for the good 10 years... I see the movie in the theatre in 1998 when I was 14 it was re-released for some anniversary or something.
Its shown also near the end when Regan shows the most disturbing face and its a combination of Regan and captain howdy combined in 1 face
This type of movie used subliminal suggestion and it got below your subconscious into your subconscious to scare you in a way most movies don't do today except for the Blair Witch Project and paranormal activity which by the way messed me up bad LOL😊
Twice? The Version You’ve Never Seen adds a few times
I’ve never seen the movie. Which version would recommend?
@@Sleepyjoe30 honestly? The original has the better ending. The VYNS ending is book-accurate but really clunky.
@@ikarikidok cool thanks!
@@ikarikidVYNV has the bloody mouth spider crawl scene which makes it totally worth it.
WHAT A WONDERFUL FAMILY MOVIE.
Lol. Hahaha. I like you.. It's the sarcasm for me😂..
Actually, Catholics at that time, were encouraged to watch it. Many were outraged, bur it shows that in the end, good always prevails over evil... A Masterpiece that Friedkin was never able to repeat...
Danhausen??
The actress who played Pazuzu’s name is Elieen Dietz! She has a book about her experiences
Looks like Michael Jackson
The face was an original makeup test for Reagan as the demon but Friedkin thought it looked fake (good call) but when seeing a flash of it saw how scary it was and voilà. It's in a pretty recent documentary
God I do not claim any bad energy ✝️✝️✝️
Hail Pazuzu, Great Protector.
One of the original figures that italian Michael the archangel is based on.
It's shown more if you watch the inferior version where Friedkin started dropping the face into scenes like a beginner learning how to Photoshop.
Agreed. They are terrible.
I Want To Know If Regan Is Alive In This Movie Since Her Mother In This Movie
I believe she is. If I’m not mistaken, they mention her name in the trailer in the present tense.
I don’t know where I got that but I could’ve sworn I saw one that mentioned her.
My mom be like: "stop using your phone or else you will be like this!" :
It’s motivations are unknown. It’s a DEMON, from hell my guy that’s all the motivation needed.
In fact, he is a chaotic being, he just wants to see the world burn. I don't understand why he would ever have any motivation.
It's shown more than that. You can see it morphed into Regan's face in another scene.
How is it scary? I actually love it. ❤
Because you are a kid and were born 40 years after it was released.
It’s more than twice.
The new movie is too beholden to be family stuff when this one is actually fighting the demon
RIP William F
The woman that does that face now signs autographs and sells photos at comic con and Halloween / horror conventions lol
A couple of seconds was enough to see that terrible face 50 years ago 😮
Why pazuzu looks like a social media clown 🤡
Because being woke is of satan,
that's why they turn everything ugly including women in video games.
St. Iakovos Tsalikis of Euboea would have solved this problem in less than 5 minutes.
Horror is a relative term, people say The Shining is also one of the most disturbing movie. But when you watch it after watching movies like Conjuring and Insidious, you won't find it very scary.
Its just a generation gap, that make people to give biased opinion.
And I found the conjuring corny. And I was in my forties and had seen so many better horror movies by then. The Exorcist was way ahead of its time...and I was a child.
And I love scary movies
Cousin of mine woke up crying and peed the bed after watching this.
That demon face is that where's waldo
Who is the face? The director?
The face appeared three times😂
AMEN .
Pazuzu
A wrestler based his look after this
Dan housesan
Three times
I find it very questionable why would you put known ancient demons from Earth's past finding the original worship relics and even displaying them
Pazuzu was never intended to be shown like that - that's why your image isn't scary. Also your opening clip was never used in the original. One of the greatest DRAMAS of all time...
The exercis
it's shown three times.
Why Do you do this to me Dimi why
With God on my Side i fell no evil✝️
Pazozo 😂 he is real in my country 😊 I saw him like 2 times when I visited my country in Guyana 😊 he is very friendly 😊 he is I'm my sold now he only appears when I get angry whit my mom 😊
Demon KING hahahah... Pick a scary one next time
The exersist is not that scary
Awful banal commentary.
