My brain EXPLODED with information, all good info, thanks
amazing how much credibility you guys have garnered with your social media presence. Please open a sister shop on the east coast :-)
HEY PAUL THANKS FOR THE HELP THE OTHER DAY WITH THE MISSING PACKAGE .... will continue to shop from y’all keep it up
THANKS FOR SHARING THE INFO
Very informative.
CJC Off Road control arm bushings , sway bar end links , loose steering boxes both inside and mounted , worn steering shaft bushings and egged out , oval mounting holes are all contribute to the steering problems also. When I bought my 01 I think everything was original . As I started replacing all the steering component it actually made things worse before it go better. I think I had to replace and upgrade everything on my truck. SOmething that made a great difference was adding a reese hitch mount up front surprisingly it strengthened my frame from flexing. Best upgrade is to eliminate it all and go to a 2003 + 1500 2wd rack and pinion . A swap I would like to do one day.
Great video, Cody. All I know is my Gen4 rides like a dream on and off road with its CJC-installed Carli Pintop lift and Toyo 35s!
Awesome awesome video, thank you so much
Excellent video. Keep up the good informational videos
Oh whats up Toby! 🤣🤣🤣
Control arm bushings!!! Forgot those
Hey I'm mainly worked with jeeps but they have the same Y steering. But with lighter duty parts. With a Jeep one of the things that starts the oscillation is a poor steering stabilizer because a steering stabilizer while it won't fix your death wobble it will mitigate the initial oscillation. Also with the jeeps like a Cherokee or a Wrangler the log adjusting caller is what Jeep calls it most of us call it a the one that has the callers to tighten it for the lengthI replaced mine with one from iron rock off-road it is a gigantic solid steel bar machined for tie rod ends at the ends. 1 Installation of this stops the long Adjusting collar /tie rod from flexing after the initial oscillation starts. I have beaten death wobble with worn mud tires Also with junkyard semi Worn parts And with no steering stabilizer. Your steering box flexing can athough make the problem worse.
Good stuff. What is CJC's thoughts on balancing options for tires. I know you guys tend to reccomend toyo e rating but my local tire shop suggested bead balancing over traditional weight balancing for tires over 35". Wondering what your thoughts are on this?
Bead balancing is a pretty highly debated topic. We typically only do it on custom dualities rear wheels where it is harder to use stick on weights. In traditional applications we always use dynamic balancing with stick on weights.
This video helped clear up the causes of this issue for me. However, I’ve read about DW in new trucks. Regardless, would it be safe to say that a Carli suspension, or one of similar quality, would take care of this once and for all? Thanks
It’s all going to depend on what’s causing the death wobble. 9/10 it’s just worn out parts that need to be replaced!
It could be the steering shaft as well not only suspension
Thanks for the video. I'm not looking for a death wobble solution, I have some odd chunks I can either hear or feel in the steering wheel. I'm very sensitive and feel and hear things others miss. My truck is a '15 3500. It has 380k miles. I did ball joints just because. I did hub bearings - just because. I replaced a badly worn left tie rod end. You didn't mention the rubber isolator in the steering. What about the front drives haft? I will be taking a good look at the track bar now too! Thanks again.
Doing this same process will help you track down your issues, but give this video a watch as it's the same thing for the 14+ trucks like yours: czcams.com/video/irog1tavsEk/video.html
I have a 14 ram 2500 crew cab 4x4 6.7 211k miles. I just experienced death wobble. All ball joints have been recently replaced. Synergy track bar, tie rod, steering box brace and drag link. Still getting the death wobble. Got new tires this morning and truck is on allignment machine as we speak. LORD please let this solve my problem lol. If this don't fix it I'm going to shocks and radius arms next.
Remember to go through and figure out exactly what's causing the issue instead of just replacing parts and hoping! There's always a reason it happens.
I've replaced every single bushing and part in my 2003 and it still sets off death wobble at 18 mph on up. New: All four control arms, wheel bearings, drag link, dual steering stabilizer, ball joints, tie rod ends, panhard rod bushings (tried both poly and stock), every single bushing, new rotors calipers and pads, new shocks (both rancho and stock). Only thing the truck has is spring spacers on the front (2") to clear 315/75/17 tires. BFG all terrains and yes, we had the tires rebalanced and I even swapped tires with my other dodge, (stock size 265/75/17 to no avail. PLUS we have a 3/8" steel frame tie plate with pillow ball mount for the new pitman arm. It actually got WORSE after we replaced everything (bought from the dealer, but the 2011 style front end parts, in dodge boxes but were Moog problem solver parts. NOTHING works. Truck is totally undrivable. Hit even a TINY pavement bump with the left front and it goes nuts. (yes, also got it aligned, no difference, the alignment wsn't off at all (I measured the tie rods before taking them off). The only thing that slowed it down was pounding washers up into the space between the frame mounts for the control arms and the arm bushings. Which is how we found the panhard rod bushings were bad, after everything else was done, it felt like the body was moving over the suspension, which in a way it was as the bushings were shot, but aside from curing that movement, it didn't stop the death wobble. ANy ideas?
Death wobble always has a cause! if you do the tests shown in this video, where do you see play?
How old is your lift?
I replaced springs and shocks/ old lift my truck came with and it took care of all that
I just had Thuren King shocks installed on my 2019 Ram 2500 and since then there is a clunking noise when I hit bumps. The shop that installed the shocks said it’s normal to hear some noise with the king shocks.
That is absolutely not normal, and likely there is something wrong with the install. We recommend visiting a different shop!
Before purchase it road fine, suspension was great. Upon purchase of a 2022 ram 2500 diesel. I had them put a 3inch leveling kit in it. It rides really rough now and when we go over a bunch of bumps in a row it death wobbles so bad we have to stop, it starts bouncing off the road or into another lane. Is it worth messing with the leveling kit or is a 4inch lift kit better as I hear a stage 2, 4 lift would solve the problem. Your thoughts?
Doing quality suspension is your key at any height! Here's a link to some options to genuinely improve your ride: www.cjcoffroad.com/collections/2019-ram-2500-carli-suspension-systems
The 3.25" systems address both front and rear coils, so they will be an all around better ride than the leveling height options.
I wonder if that would work for ford's to? But it should be easier to keep solid axles lined up then independent axles
Basically replace all front end components with quality parts and alignment afterwards.
Problem fixed
Could you do a similar video for a '17+ Super Duty and how to diagnose/fix death wobble?
Hey D, we would need a truck to come in that is actually having it! So far, we have only seen forum posts in regards to death wobble.
My 2018 Super duty is literally at the dealership as I type this to try and remedy the death wobble that I get. (24,000 miles - no lift or aftermarket suspension)
@@danhess1324 my 2017 Super Duty (25k miles) is going in for the third time on Wednesday for death wobble. If Ford doesn't fix it this time, I'm going to look into the GMC's. I'll take a bath on it but it's better than killing myself, my family or someone else when the death wobble starts at higway speeds and have no control over the steering. Ford has a real problem here they are ignoring.
Dan Hess i have a 2018 Super Duty that had death wobble. I replaced the track bar and the steering stabilizer and they helped but I know there is still something wrong with the geometry of the front suspension. I hate how it drives, hate it with a passion. I may trade it in for an F-150. Those are solid and smooth trucks.

These superduties come from factory without enough caster. This guy explains everything and to fix.
Is the synergy steering upgrade meant for street truck use only? Like a daily driver
You can use it for a street truck or dedicated off road rig. It works great for daily use.
Does the death wobble happens to IFS trucks or it’s just with the solid axles ?
1. Steering linkage
2. Track bar
3. Ball joints
I have a 2012 Ram 2500 with a bad death wobble. I have changed the steering linkage. The stabilizer bar, and the lower control arms. I also had it aligned. I think it actually got worse after I changed these parts. Ball joints were done around 1 year ago and are still tight. Any ideas?.
I have a 2022 Ram 2500 with 5k miles. I’m experiencing a “shimmy” feeling when I go over rough roads or bumps repeatedly. Any idea what to inspect? Kind of feels like a vibration on your feet. Like the front end floats when going over rough sections
Likely too high of tire pressure or track bar, but follow along with this tutorial and you can check the front end for play to rule that out!
I had a question. My f350 has a death wobble a month ago I took it to ford to get it fixed. A week later I felt the truck shake again when I was driving down the road and as about 2 weeks after it did it again. It only happens when I go through like uneven parts of the road I don’t want to say pot hoe but something like that. When I slow down it goes away and lets me proceed until i go over hole
I have a 2019 ram 2500, is it normal for the drag link to be able to rotate by hand and make a clunk sound at end of travel?
yes that's completely normal! Those drag link joints need to be able to rotate in order to follow the axle through the suspension travel while also rotating.
@@CJCOffRoad thanks for the reply. that’s a relief lol. As for the bushings on the OEM TRACK BAR… should there be any movement at all or solid as a rock? Mine is hardly noticeable but is moving not sure if it’s a little worn or if it’s just the rubber bushing moving a tine bit against the bar.
There should be zero lateral movement in a track bar joint, but since the factory joint is just a rubber bushing you'll see some lateral movement even if it's brand new.
I’m getting death wobble above 40 mph. 2018 ram dually
Something is loose or worn, but follow the procedure in this video to track down where it's coming from!
@@CJCOffRoad took it to high priced RAM. They changed the drag link and stabilizer bar and rotate the tires . STILL THE SAME ISSUE! These oil change RAM guys are just that.
What about the first gen 🥴🥴🥴🥴
I hate the steering system in my 2018 F-250. Once I am not upside down on my equity I will go back to an F-150.
Why is this not a recall????”
It's just from worn out parts! With proper maintenance a truck will never have death wobble.
Got my truck two years ago from Texas and soon as I left the used truck dealer i got the death wobble.🙀.. i’ve changed ball joints ,tie rods, shocks, wheel bearings an track bar and still this shit shacks like crazy. So I ended up taking it to the dealer for the recall on the track bar which my dumbass should’ve done before all the parts I changed lol .. and guess what!! It got fucking worst! So after all this shit ! I tryed one more thing was change the fucking steering gear box! A guess what again!? This peace of shit decides to shake more than it’s ever did ! Lmfao! So looks like I paid 64,000 to sit in my drive looking pretty. 2015 Dodge Ram 3500 longhorn 🚛👌
Did you perform the diagnostic steps covered in the video? Send a video to the guys a CJC, they'll help you figure it out.
That truck don’t look that heavy duty underneath
You'd think a guy who's telling you how to fix your vehicle would know there's no such thing as an "emergency brake".
Last we checked e-brake and parking brake were both perfectly acceptable terms for the same part!
Good job. Very informative and well described.
