From my point of view, the Ellenfeldstadion is one of the most beautiful and iconic stadiums across Germany. It's totally unique and charming. In other words, the exact opposite of these frosty and soulless modern 'arenas' in professional football made of steel and glass. The stadium's club, Borussia Neunkirchen, has even played in the Bundesliga here once upon a time. This took place in the 60s. Sadly, this club has experienced a huge decline within the last five decades and is now playing in the sixth(!) tier, the Saarlandliga, a league which features regional clubs from the Saarland only, which is one of the smallest German federal states right next to the French border. Luckily, I've already been there when my local club, Wuppertaler SV, had a play-off away match here for promotion from the fourth tier to the third tier. Even if more than 20 years have passed since then. These lovely and steep standing terraces which look a bit decayed (but still in a quite good shape regarding their age) were awesome and you can literally smell the history inside this stadium. I hope it will never ever get demolished as a piece of German football history despite the club's poor performance on the field today and therefore low attendances.

As a non-German, my question is how this club was able to play in the higher tiers in the past (money/city proximity)?
Is it because money wasn’t important back then (but still where did the players come from) or was there some money coming from the industry of Saarbrücken?
