  • Official video! The process of manufacture of sago ( Sabudana) from tapioca in Salem , Tamilnadu India is shown. It may be noted that India's 90 percent saboodana is produced in Salem region( Salem and adjoining eight districts) as this area is having the highest yield of Tapioca in the entire world. Unlike Kerala where tapioca is used as a staple diet, here the tapioca is industrially processed into sago and starch. SAGOSERVE is a large cooperative dealing with marketing of sago and starch made by around 400 SME units in this region.

Please honestly appreciate the whole process of showing us how sabudana is made. It's not about country, you must know while making flour in U.S. , they cannot avoid small rodents falling in, so parts of rodents in flour is acceptable. There are a lot of things we don't know about large scale food preparation. Please don't watch industrial food preparation videos if you cannot stomach it. And eat freshly made food at home, don't eat commercially made one. But please do appreciate this person's effort.

Lol everyone is complaining of hygiene process when this food is made but you don't even know how half the other stuff you eat is made. I think this is perfectly fine. All I see is hard work of many workers going into the factory process of making saboodana and that needs to be appreciated rather than reprimanded. Go look into other videos of how other people in africa make use of sago using a ditch full of muddy water---that is something to be wary of. Even then, their process is good for them with the amount of resources they have. It also doesn't deserve our scrutiny. They've been doing this for many years, I think that speaks a lot about their products. And if you look into how hygenic the medications you eat are made, they still cause side effects unlike these food products. If FDA can approve of these medications with multiple side effects, this is nothing.

Jini In a Bottle you don't even make sense in the end. What the hell are you talking about?
Lol how safe factories were in early 1900, a shame that standards changed, they did it for such a long time and put so much work in it... they must've know what they are doing.
So we have to appreciate all possible risks no matter how dangerous or deadly they could be? Because they are around for a long time and put hard work in it?
Also curing a deadly disease with the possible side effect of a headache sounds like a bad deal to you? You'd rather die in pain and agony?

Film is informative as to how saboodana is produced. It is nothing like what we heard in rumours about insects etc. (which I did not believe or stop eating saboodana). Although lot of is desired to make it more palatable to more people, must commend the factory for showing it AS IT IS, hygienic or not. There are some simple things can be improved like wearing gloves, rubber shoes, protective clothing etc. to reduce contamination. Stainless steel machinery and floor is desirable too. The film is over 3 years old and I hope that conditions are better now. It is not going to stop me eating saboodana, as we are probably eating things produced in worse conditions unknowingly.

Sabudana in India is, as far as I know made from tapioca roots only.(We cultivate tapioca in our farm and sell it to Sabudana factories). Sago more common in Africa and other places is made from the soft pith of other plants.

You must cover hair, facial hair, must wear gloves and should wear clean clothes ( white preferably) these all should be provided by the company. One more thing which I found to be disturbing .. why food is touching the floor ? Powdered food should not touch the floor at all.,.. this food is exposed to cross-contamination

Do you have any idea how inhospitable this environment is for the workers?? I can't imagine walking on sabudana or inhaling that much flour dust to earn a living!! All many of us think about is the consumption end and our needs. After watching this, I wonder how we can help them...

in north i have thrown sago packets number of times it just does not taste like saggo at all. Whenever I visit Pune I buy from there. A lot can be done to improve cleanliness.

In comparison to other Industrial environment, this factory looks good combination of Man & Machine.cleanliness is maintained up to desirable extent. Some thing can be improved, like filling up of the Sago in the Bags after weight is not hygienic as the two person doing this work walking bare footed on the Sago lying on floor. The Sago can be kept in bulk on a 2 feet platform & labor first finish near one absolutely & then can go ahead. The feet touch directly to the material (Sago) can be avoided.Rest is clean & good. Looks good factory.I was not aware that after this much lengthy process it is reaching to us.Over all Very Good Factory faking cleanly food items.Generally when the visitors allowed to visit the process.
