This private military company, Desperado, makes use of AI technology. In previous events of the world of Metal Gear, those two-legged mechs were used in large numbers. The chicken-legged ones are called "Gekko". Normal human soldiers and mercenaries had trouble against them. Lots of trouble. The only known weakness was the legs made of artificial muscles, and therefore artificial blood. Gekko are not mechs in the traditional sense, nobody pilots them. They are unmanned. An expensive yet effective tool. At least, when facing normal soldiers. Desperado could use any unmanned units or even vehicles, from tanks to helicopters.
More to the point, those guns on it are the M2HB chambered in .50 BMG. Normal soldiers get rekt so easily by these nimble, mechanical and fearless machines - but as Raiden can easily show, guns are close to worthless against cyborgs. More, Raiden is something of a living legend to the mercenary world inculcated with the dogma of SOP. It's a no-brainer that Desperado would have extensive files on Mr. Lightning Bolt; this would be why the Gekkos didn't try to shoot him apart.
