Drive-By Truckers - Where The Devil Don't Stay Lyrics
My Daddy played poker on a stump in the woods back in his younger days
Prohibition was the talk, but the rich folks walked to the woods where my Daddy stayed
Jugs and jars from shiners, these old boys here, they ain't miners
They came from the twenty-niners
It didn't take a hole in the ground to put the bottom in their face
Back in the thirties when the dust bowl dried
And the woods in Alabama didn't see no light
My Daddy played poker by a hard wood fire
Squeezing all his luck from a hot copper wire
Scrap like a wildcat fights till the end
Trap a wildcat and take his skin
Deal from the bottom, put the ace in the hole
One hand on the jug but you never do know
Son come running
You better come quick
This rotgut moonshine is making me sick
Your Mama called the law and they're gonna take me away
Down so far even the Devil won't stay
Where I call to the Lord with all my soul
I can hear him rattling the chains on the door
He couldn't get in I could see he tried
Through the shadows of the cage around the forty watt light
Daddy tell me another story
Tell me about the lows and the highs
Tell me how to tell the difference between what they tell me is the truth or a lie
Tell me why the ones who have so much make the ones who don't go mad
With the same skin stretched over their white bones and the same jug in their hand
My Daddy played poker on a stump in the woods back when the world was gray
Before black and white went and chose up sides and gave a little bit of both their way
The only blood that's any cleaner is the blood that's blue or greener
Without either you just get meaner and the blood you gave gives you away

I feel like more people need to hear this band
Miss my pops every day and night. He was a drinking and a gambling man. He would of loved this song and related to it more than I fathom. Hope you found your peace.
Genius band. Genius guitar. Genius lyrics. Genius bass. Genius vocal. Genius drumming.
I remember when I left work on a early lunch break to pick up 'The Dirty South'. I almost had a wreck when I started head bangin to Where the Devil Don't Stay.
DBTs continually evolve. Some work is harder to accept than others...other albums go down as easy as old whisky. But I will always love em.
And no matter how hard or easy what the band comes up with is to accept, you can never say that they don't have something to say or that it isn't interesting to hear.

Trucker here, I have never heard a better song. -John Bliss-1999-2019 Wildcat!
Years later I find myself hollering and singing and jamming on my acoustic! Learn on acoustic and you know what I mean it’s a string breaker
My favorite song by DBT is cottonseed I remember the first time I heard it I was on a badass master craft skie boat with a JL audio sound system it literally sounded like a concert out on the lake and then I realized we were 75 feet from a cop and I played it over and over probably 100 times that day and then I looked a little deeper into DBT I have purchased every one of their albums for my self and even for my friends and family for gifts... Keep on rocking Drive by truckers....
One of my favorite songs of all time. Killer.

Damn, glad I listened to this band
great rock song!!Timeless!!! Why is this band is so "unknown"??!!!!
Same reason the best tap dancers are unknown: rock and roll is an archaic art.
@@evanoglesby9504 I don't care I like it anyway. Classic music is archaic perhaps 200 years ago and many people still like it too.
This song turns the dump over and takes the waitress home, great jam.....
heard them at Bonaroo 2005 first time . awsome

Mr. JOHN MICHAEL COOLEY!!
From Two-Steppin to Twelve-Steppin.
I wish times were still like this. One focus. You didn't need to worry about all the other bullshit in the world because you trusted people enough to know they wouldnt take advantage of you. Things have changed though, Ill always have my back turned looking for the next shmuch to try and take advantage of me so I can rip there troat out. Rip Bob Marley, Rip Jesus, Rip Tupac. Peace, love, happiness, hookers and blow.
These guys just don't have a bad song to be found, do they?
My Mum: If it's making him sick, why does he drink it?
God Damn!
Came from the 29ers
The art work is as cool as the old Uriah Heap album covers . Music much different though .
deadly cover art
Tell me how to tell the difference tween what they tell me is a truth or a lie....

At least I've tried...

Walter. Amerika 2017
Why is it all of a sudden I can't listen to this song on my iPhone??
Also this shoulda been in rdr 2
i can listen to it on my phone ...... confusing shit ...
Absolutely awesome- I think the only raw attitude I've ever heard in Britain that compares with this is a track by an eighties band called silverwing entitled 'rock and roll are 4 letter words'.
SOUTHERN ROCK ought to make its way to wembly for a really big concert and then split up to tour britain and give us all a bit more spirit!
not many youtube vids with zero dislikes
k J. And 5 years later its only got 13
Sounds like my grandpa started off on the prohibition was squeezing his luck out that.copper pipe.the day he died
“They came from the 29ers” what does he mean by that
donmige81 i think has something to do with the ending of prohibition after the stock market crash of 1929. Or maybe not.
Yea, I think it was the start of the depression, right in the middle of prohibition
There was a gold rush in Georgia in the 1820s
The 29'ers were the miners who raised political pressure against the Cherokee because they wanted to mine gold on their land that was protected by the Treaty of Washington.
But still, he federal government forced the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears and inspired the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
Try
Uh yeah.. Ladies and Gents, the most prolific southern rock band. What's that? WSP!? No. Sorry. Alabama boys do it better than Gawgia uns
At least I don't have sodomy, and infidelity on my soul.
You do not cross the path of democrats like this with this song. Makes me want to change sides. Rockin like this makes me question my stance. Damn fine song.
I’m here from the degenerates on Netflix
