  • Two exceptional works from the Neumann Family Collection will open the 20th Century Evening Sale in New York on 16 May.
The Neumann collection offers an unprecedented view of art history, spanning the breadth of modern and contemporary art and offering a continuous dialogue between styles, subjects and mediums.
Max Ernst’s ‘Un ami empressé’ is an exceptional example of the artist’s sculptural oeuvre, conceived during his vacation on Long Island with fellow artist and partner Dorothea Tanning. As noted by gallerist Julien Levy, upon witnessing Ernst’s creative outburst: “I feel terribly impressed, and I confess in confidence to Dorothea that Max has suddenly become the greatest sculptor in the modern world”.
Pablo Picasso’s 1938 ‘Femme assise (Dora Maar)’ is among the artist’s finest portraits in ink on paper. Picasso employs strong and animated line in rich, black, India Ink to bring his beloved subject to life. His unparalleled skill as a draughtsman shines through the lyrical, confident line, while his adoration of his lover and collaborator Dora Maar, who was herself an artist and a well-known figure within the Parisian Surrealist circles, is evident in her enthroned pose, as if the ruler of his universe.
