How to Change Speed in Audacity Without Chipmunk Effect! Change Speed in Audacity! Speed up Audio!

  • Hey guys my name is Scoby and in today's tutorial, I will show you how to change the speed of your audio in Audacity without having a chipmunk effect!
The change speed function in Audacity works fine, but often gives weird effects to your audio and can mess with it. A much better method for changing the speed of audio in Audacity is the change tempo effect, it can speed up your audio without the negative side effects of the change speed tool!

Unfortunately Audacity gives you a crazy amount of distortion when using any of their effects to speed up and slow down songs due to the way it stretches the sound waves. Try taking a music track and slowing it down by 25% then listening to it. Then take the same file and load it into VDJ and slow it down by 25%. You will see what I mean when you listen to them side by side. One sounds like its coming out of C3PO's ass and the other coming from a klipsch speaker

Yeah I know what you mean. The "Change Tempo" algorithm sucks. Surely there's a good time scaling plugin similar to the one in VDJ.

It's amazing, sometimes you hear a song that you cannot get out of your mind. However, the song is just too slow for your liking. Then Audacity comes along, and you are able to increase the speed by a certain percentage. All of a sudden, you have the song in that perfect speed. Audacity is great! Thanks for your help.

I want to know how it modulates the sound to only affect temo and keep the pitch. I guess it analyses the pitch from the original and artificially recreates it with higher or slower tempo. So the resolution, bitrate of the audio really determines how fast or slow you can make the clip without changinng pitch and getting bad effects.

The reason why Change Speed also affects pitch is because speed basically is pitch. The perception of pitch is a function of the amount of oscillations a second (frequency Hz). So if you take an audio clip of a 600hz tone and just slow it down to half speed, is it the same frequency? No, because you just slowed down that tone, thereby the amount of oscillations per second. This is why slow motion often sounds demonic, fast-forwarding often sounds screechy, and generally speed and pitch seem intertwined- It's because they are.

I have an audio file that was created from an old reel-to-reel tape, and although the correct speed was used, the pitch is too low. Should I not use "Change Speed" if I actually want to the pitch to go up? Thanks!!!
