A Tour of "the Dark Ages" | Charlemagne, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons | MEGA-COMPILATION DOCUMENTARY

- This mega-compilation documentary gathers together all my videos thus far about the Early Middle Ages set together in chronological order. 19th century historians referred to the early medieval era as “the Dark Ages.” Today, historians reject that term. The period after the fall of the western Roman Empire was indeed an era of strife, fierce battles and conquering kings, but it was also an era of growth, artistic achievement, and the rise of new civilizations. This is the Early Middle Ages, roughly, from the sixth century to the start of the eleventh century. It was the era of the early Rashidun conquests, of Charles Martel and the ascent of the great empire of Charlemagne. It was the period of the harrowing Viking invasions, of Alfred the Great and the Anglo-Saxons of England, and the rise of the Normans.

I absolutely love European history. This is fantastic. I am an oil painter and right now I'm painting and watching/listening to this - In my perfect happy world. Thanks for creating this!
Now that's great to know! Paint on my friend!
This video is massive guys. It's a complete collection of all my videos thus far set during the Early Middle Ages, placed roughly in chronological order. For those who prefer the long-form videos, this one should be useful. Thanks to all of you who have supported and followed the channel all these years, there is much more to come!
Thank you for your hard work on these most excellent videos.
@@MiddleAmericanMeterMan Thanks very much my friend!
Great work , I sure appreciate the time you spend and your dedication to this stuff. Bravo bro

This mega-compilation documentary offers a comprehensive and enlightening tour of the Early Middle Ages. The exploration of figures like Charlemagne, the Vikings, and the Anglo-Saxons provides a vivid picture of this dynamic period.Thank you!
Love to see ppl who have a passion truly put in the time... Long videos like this are what ppl who love history are great full to see... Appreciate you and great job 👍...
Thank you my friend!
Its 2023 April 25th, and everything, majority of humanity knows about HISTORY is either speculated assume or erased and made up. What if the elites of this world knew that if they where going to continue there status as the ruling class along with future generations they would have to destroy humanities history and create there own. Just my opinion/comment😊
Finally winding down after a long and exhausting day and having this to turn on is EXACTLY what I needed! I give thanks for you and I am very thankful for finding this channel in early 2021!
Exhausing at fighting Saladdin?
@@theCosmicQueen Absolutely. I’ve known fatigue, remember I once fought two days with an arrow through my bollocks. That guy is on a whole different level.

Dude. I have a Medieval History final today and this has been an impossible class because the history is very multifarious and complex and the professor has the thickest Italian accent I have ever heard. He is the nicest guy but so hard to understand. I have 2 more hours before I have to leave the house and just enough time to feel confident I can BS this test. Thank God.
I got a B+ in the class overall. Clutched it.
Hope you got a pass mate .
Gawd I’m not sure if it’s better or not, that I finished hs before CZcams and internet cramming

It's actually the early middle ages
Woow this is awesome glad I found this channel, I’ve been so fascinated with the history of the “Dark Ages” ever since I was kid. I remember many years ago reading literature and watching documentaries on this topic and realising Western Europe really isn’t in the “Dark Ages” haha. So many things happened and I’m gonna enjoy this, thanks 👍🏾

Watched it all. Enjoyed it all. Thanks.
The discarded term "Dark Ages" continues to describe my general knowledge of the period, but this managed to shed enough light that I can now fumble around for a proper light switch.
It is the dark ages
Love using documentaries like this to fall asleep to but they're just to fascinating to shut my brain down
I thought I was the only one who listens to these videos to fall asleep as I'm a very anti-drug
@@boricuaarecibo9259 far from it
Trouble is that the topic is interesting.
Trick is to find one on a topic you already know but still enjoy. Like rewatching a movie, you like it but can zone out since your brain can film in the blanks
I do catch myself paying attention too and try to stay awake but I get so relaxed I don't remember falling asleep.

Thank you very much!
This is so word up. Really enjoying this right here.
I prefer long-form lectures and discussions; I learn better. Thank you for all you do. You are the best regarding medieval Europe and Spain; much better than actual vids from Spain, where everything seems tainted by “Modern Think”, where everything good seems evil and malicious, and the bad is not only acceptable, but encouraged.

AMAZING WORK , Excellent History lesson, muchos Gracias!
Glad you liked it!
I'm just beginning with this video but it has been so enlightening I cannot put it into words. I gotta be honest, as a person who was born in a Central American country, early medieval history is limited if not inexistent in our public education. You grow up with some idea of where are some places located, and most of it is because of biblical readings when you were a child and you were learning how to read, you would even take up the Bible and read it with emotion, and also information from movies, series, books, videogames, sports and other types of media.
It was not until last year that I started playing the videogame Crusader Kings 3, that I was exposed to medieval Europe on a deeper level. I understood the difference between the Eastern Roman Empire and Byzantium or the Byzantine Empire. I also realized that Turkey was not in Africa or Arabia and Croatia was closer to the Vatican than I had ever considered it possible. And the more you play this game the more you discover, and the more you crave for knowing what really happened in some of the places you get to interact with, or to know the real story behind one of the characters of the game you find yourself declaring alliances with or warring against. I will keep watching this for sure!
@German Villegas
Thank you for the game suggestion of Crusader Kings 3. I will check it out.
@@EssentiallyCamada Thanks to you again! You can certainly check it out, it is a strategy game based on creating a dynasty that would last for generations, or using the existing ones and trying to change their historical course. Thanks to this game I've searched for history related to the Carolingians. The earliest start date on the game is 867 so by then the Al-Andalus dominance is already in place, and actually there is an expansion called The Fate of Iberia in which you get to participate, and if you're lucky enough, you can end the Iberian struggle for the peninsula. This game may seem boring for those wanting epic graphics or warfare animations, as the game centers more in administration and strategy, but still is a very good and accurate game, way much more than other medieval games I've played before.
Happy Thanksgiving and cool that you collected all your early medieval videos into one long presentation.

4 hour video with over a million veiws, glad to see it.
This has been a fun documentary! I agree this shouldn't be called the dark ages. I did like one of the top comments that said this should be called the Age of Faiths.
Fantastic video. Thank you for compiling this masterpiece! What I take away is the enduring faith in God many of these men had.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you.
let’s go this is awesome
Alfred king of Wessex! Ooh man learned a little historical events from him. This shall be very useful knowledge. I watched The Last Kingdom and surprised how accurate the show was compared to the historical events.
Very well done.
Thank you!
This is awesome 👍
Glad you think so!
Thanks!
Was going to try to sleep to this long video but it's very interesting and I learned a lot. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just starting this treasure now
Now this is what I'm talkin about!
Epic 😎
Excellent narration, montage and research work as usual!
Much appreciated!
Great video, I am learning a lot here. BUT what I appreciate the most is your narration, which sounds like a lovely real person as opposed to AI. I am unable to listen to the AI in many videos because I just hate robots talking to me as if they are sentient creatures. So thanks for taking the time and effort to do such a lovely job here!

Now that's when armies were armies 💯
Better than audible
Interesting!
It was still being called the Dark Ages when I was in college in the late 80s.
A documentary worthy of being called a "Grand Crusader"
Amazingly detalied doc, and what is the song that starts playing at 38:34? i cant figure for the death of me
Really great video! Been watching all your stuff since finding it and I'm curious what the videos is from? Is it a game? Or did you animate the fights yourself?
Not sure, a friend of mine did most of the game clips from this, but I believe they're sampled from some Total War games.
@@RealCrusadesHistory Alright cool thank you! Love your content btw keep it up!
Hey, a great big Mercy Beau Kool to this video's creator/aggregator/curator/writer/producer! Beautifully done.
bravo
1:12:00 "Zees eez de castle of my master Louis de Lombard!"
i wish you would include references to the images you use. some of these paintings and drawings id like to know where to look for them.
What’s the name of that guitar tune that plays frequently through the entire show? It’s stuck in my head and I have to find it! It’s slow, melodic, and in A minor.
Edit: it sounds like “ Yonder Hill and Dale” which is added in the video description but listening to the track it doesn’t have the guitar part in it 🤷🏼♂️
The music during this show reminds me a bit of Cigarettes after sex. Not sure if it is what you're looking for but it's definitely slow and melodic yet repetitive
37:20 sounds like "She Moved Through the Fair"
It's so sad to see how far the Frank's fell after the death of Charlemagne and his sons. I don't think he would have taken the Dane threat very well.
Sorry, it's still referred to as the dark ages, which is why you rightly felt compelled to include it in the title.
3:43:20 - what song is that?
you got chapters for this homie?
I hope you took notes, because there will be a pop quiz on this at the end of the video.
Is there more about alfonso and the asturian kingdom
When I see or hear folks today say that the end must be near because of how bad things are today, I always ask if they ever heard of the Dark Age..that was way worse than we are now experiencing by miles.
Anyone know what game they are using for video reference?
What the game/program you use for all the animated parts ?
Thats Total War Atilla
Its medieval II total war
I love to put this on while I'm doing something like my nails or drawing
I love the idea that Alfred was looking around saying “ok morons here is your assigned reading lets work on these IQ’s” lol.
Ancestors of mine!
I'm always interested in the logistics of history. For example, how did these large groups of men move around from land to land? How did they find food for their horses, for themselves? Just by raiding villages? There couldn't have always been a village nearby to plunder. How did they keep themselves clean and the men from fighting amongst one another? Clean their clothes, patch up wounds etc....fascinating.
I have always wondered this as well. I know just about every army had certain men jusr for foraging for food, supplies, etc of the lands they were in. But I believe many of the actual military men would also help in foraging. I’m sure they also had some form of supply lines with regular caravan shipments of goods etc they would bring. I know they would do that for the attacking army during a siege of a city. So I assume they would have some form of this supply line at almost all times
What smaller videos are in this long video?
Correct.
