      Close call sports suggests the umpire made the correct call, and why.
      Maybe you should take an umpire school course before criticizing correct calls.

  • @theburnetts
    @theburnetts Před měsícem +5

    First of all - the call is obstruction not interference. Interference is when the offense interferes with the defense. Obstruction is when the defense hinders the offense. The best angle for this play is a high camera from foul territory behind third base looking back towards second base. What Wendlestedt is saying is that Rojas blocked the path of Bohm with his body *before* he received the throw. He is saying that as Rojas was running from his SS position to the third base bag he cut in front of Bohm (without possession of the baseball) and therefore impeded Bohm's ability to run to third base. I actually completely disagree with this call. I don't believe Rojas obstructed or hindered Bohm at all. But that is the call Wendlestedt made. It has nothing to do with whether he was out of not. A fielder could impede a runner half way between bases by blocking him and then the runner could be tagged out 10 feet before the base. That would be obstruction even though the runner was clearly out. So Bohm being out by 2 feet means nothing in this call. It's all about whether the umpire felt that the fielder blocked the path of the runner without the baseball AND did the fielder absolutely have to be there to receive the throw or could he have moved somewhere else to receive the throw and not block the path. Like I said - I think the umpire blew this call completely. But at least this is an explanation of why he called what he did.
    The reason that this isn't reviewable is that it is completely the field umpires judgement as to whether or not Rojas' movements hindered Bohm. I think the issue is that if you make judgement calls reviewable then you are basically letting one replay umpire completely override the judgement of a field umpire and that probably wouldn't go over well with the on field umpires. Just my guess.

    MLB has been emphasizing calling this play to their umps this season. Does that mean they are pressuring the umps to make this call? I don't know, but could be. And could that pressure lead to an egregious call like last night's? Again, I don't know but it could (in my opinion).

    @vincentwendt720 Před 29 dny

    By MLB's standards I don't think this was a "blown" call. Major League Baseball hasn't released any memo that says that this isn't the interpretation they are looking for. Based on that, I'm guessing this is how MLB wants these plays to be officiated.

    Wendlestedt is a KNOWN Dodger-hater. He’s VERY good friends with the Giants announcers, Kruk and Kuip. He’s been a giant fan since he was a kid. Check his ump scorecard anytime he’s behind the plate when the Dodgers play. Always skewed for the other team. He should NEVER be allowed to work a Dodger game. EVER.

    Watch close call sports take on this call. It was obstruction. The new rules on how to judge obstruction for blocking the base or plate considers where the fielder catching a thrown ball is before catching the ball. The questions an umpire must answer are
    (1) did the fielder impart the runner in any way? Yes, foot on foot contact. In this instance it is the fielder’s obligation to avoid contact unless with the ball in the hand or glove.
    (2) did the fielder have to be positioned before the bag, blocking it to make the catch? No. The fielder could have been on or behind the bag.
    After arriving at those two answers there was obstruction.
    If there had been no foot on foot contact, or the fielder had already caught the ball before entering the runners base path, the runner would be safe because there was no obstruction.
    Additionally, you used a video with a camera from the wrong angle. The third base camera had the best view, similar to the umpire, where it is obvious the fielder entered the runner’s base path before catching the ball. No review umpire in a studio in New York City after viewing the third base camera video would over rule the call made on the field.
    Only after catching a thrown ball can a fielder enter a runner’s basepath to make a play. End of line.

    • @daegueric
      @daegueric Před 27 dny

      If the fielder enters the runner's path and catches the ball three days before the runner arrives, it's not obstruction. He was waiting for him with the ball.

    This call was Obstruction - not interference. Obstruction is when the defense interferes with the runner. That said, once the fielder has possession of the ball, they can be anywhere they want - including blocking the bag. The call of Obstruction includes the language "Impedes..." so any act, whether blocking the bag or not, if the fielder impedes the runner in any way before having the ball, then "In the umpires judgement" they can call Obstruction. That fact alone makes this a horrible call to review; the only obstruction call they allow review on is the Blocking Home Plate call - which I really don't agree with; these Interference/Obstruction calls need to come from the field, not some 3rd party in a video review booth somewhere. That said, I do agree, Rojas did not obstruct Bohm on this play, and by the time he did, Rojas had possession of the ball so he was legal in what he did.

    Jomboy does a good breakdown of this play. From the umpires angle the runner slides into the fielders foot which was in the way of the base so the play is a lot closer than it seems. I also don't think anyone cares because it happened to the Dodgers who people hate as much as the Yankees.
