      ye, personally just about every monster fish shouldn't be regularly on the shelves, as usually stores buy in animals they'd sell regularly and the vast majority of people would not have a suitable tank or pond for most monster fish.
      Personally, why I'd love to rescue, as I see dozens of varying species especially oscars up for rehome as they've outgrown setups.

      well I would love one (very rare and expensive to get in Australia). I would raise it in a tank, then move it to a pond when it outgrows the tank.

      Only as pond fish. They shouldn’t be banned but they really should be telling people from the get go that these things need 300 gallon or larger ponds not a tank.

    That one branching whisker though…
    It’s not always a good idea to ask the people at the store though because they may not know any better
    However we live in age where we can just pull our phones out of our pocket and do a quick google search that can tell you how big something will get, etc., so there’s really no excuse not to do research before impulse buying
    Also for those looking for something similar to a red-tailed catfish that won’t get as big, the pictus catfish might be worth considering, though it’s recommended to have at least a four foot tank for them due to their activity level

    I have an outdoor pond near by road, and mostly keep goldfish in there. A couple weeks ago, as I was feeding my goldfish, I noticed that I suddenly had a red tail in my pond. I think someone dumped it, after finding out how big they get, but its very interesting find.

    Anything that regularly gets over 10 inches shouldn't be common when you walk into any fish store.
    Maybe have it listed available as a special order on a sign in the store for the few individuals with appropriate sized aquariums. But you dont want the 12 year kid with the 10 gallon his dad got him for Christmas throwing baby monsters into it.

      @@Reptile_Gecko Very true, and in my own experience even when you research multiple reliable sources you can *still* end up with untrue information
      Like when it comes to minimum tank sizes, general consensus for black skirt tetras is 15 gallons, and for oscars it’s 55 gallons (for the record, a 55 is 12 inches wide while an adult oscar can grow to 12-14 inches in length, and that’s not even getting into the bioload.)
      Imo probably your best bet is to consult multiple people who have firsthand experience with the fish you’re looking into

    • @rallywagon261
      @rallywagon261 Před 10 měsíci +1

      When I lived close to our LFS, I would visit the place, get a list of the fish I liked they had in stock, go home and spend a few hours doing research and asking questions I was unsure about on the Aquarium Coop forums. I dont live close to that fish store anymore. So now I find what I like then call them to see if they have it.
      To the point though. I dont think buying fish, or any animal, on the spot, spur of the moment is a good idea. All of the fish in my aquariums all took a week or more to decide on and research.
      But, I have liquid rock, so, for the fishes sake, I do need to be a little more selective than people with a less hard water.
