- Keypad trim came off while my wife was driving and the car immediately had a lift gate ajar message on the dash. Lift gate would not open at all. Interior lights would stay on because the car thought the lift gate was open. After piecing together information from several forums I found a temp solution until I can get my new keypad in.

DISCLAIMER: I am just an average Joe and not a mechanic.
Had this exact issue, as you expected others would, and just re-adhered the same panel on as it was still attached by the wires. Just to see if it would work, I went ahead and tried swapping the fuse without doing anything else, and as luck had it, it got the job done. Will report back if it doesn't last as a solution, but I think it should.
For those doing this one at home, a light-up makeup mirror you or your spouse or kid may have worked well for lighting in a pinch. That fuse box is really up in there. Limber up and get ready for your Cirque du Soleil audition!
This was the most helpful video ever! I have never changed a fuse or even taken off my door panel so this was a life saver!
This works! After spending $200 and 2 days at the shop for them to tell me they don’t know and I should take it to the Ford dealership, your video just saved me! I only wish I found it sooner! Thank you
@@daniellerob15 you would think they would consult CZcams at the repair shop if they couldn’t figure it out…..
Other thing to add, that fuse also affected cabin light not dimming quickly once you close the doors, reveres camera lights only showing green lines and back climate control. Once I replaced that fuse as Jason suggested all is back to normal. Thanks again Jason. 🤙
You saved me a ton of time appreciate that man!
So glad I found this video. Took it to two Ford dealers today and neither had any idea what the issue could be. Luckily they were backed up and can't see me for two weeks. Definitely cancelling that appointment. I've never used the keypad before so I may just unplug it and try and glue the panel back on, then replace the fuse. I'm sure you saved me over $1K.
Thank you so much for explaining this. I NEVER would have figured this out and would have been a sucker paying big time at the dealership.
Thank you! I went through the process but apparently blew the new fuse so had to replace that again. I just unplugged the keypad. I never use it anyways. I think it is ridiculous the location of the fuse box but figured it. Thanks to CZcams videos like this I think I am a novice frustrated mechanic. 😁
I will never buy a Ford again. I can not believe that this same thing happen 2 times, now the lift gate works and replaced the keyless pad, from the dealership, and now im having issues with it even turning on. but the liftgate works
thanks for the vid.
I think all manufacturers have one or two stupid designs like this. Like on my pathfinder, my heater core has gone out but to change it I have to remove the ENTIRE dash 🙄
Thanks man you saved my daughter a pile of cash they were going to change the power trunk motor and the key pad and labour 1600 this was the most helpful video thank
Love to hear that!
Would love it if you fixed it, drove by that repair shop, pressed the power lift button, tell them it was a $3 fuse, and drive away🤣
Thank you so much for your video! You saved me quite a bit of time in troubleshooting. That fuse under the dash was a pain, but not nearly as bad as the door panel clips.
Yea you really have to contort your body to get under there to change that fuse out.
I never comment on videos but omg THANK YOU!!! Mine blew off today, new one isn't coming for two more days 😅 I desperately needed this solution!!!
Extremely helpful!!! My lift ajar lights been on since last week and husband tried all weekend to find the fuse. Lifesaver for sure!!!
Dude THANK YOU! I was about to hit the bottle which would not have helped anything. 🤣 Listening to this made me feel like someone had followed me around with a camera because it was my exact scenario.
If your ever in Nashville give me a shout. I owe you a beer and dinner.
Ha! No problem. Next time I’m at The Pharmacy in East Nashville I’ll hit you up😆
Had this exact thing happen with my 2019 Explorer. Hats off to you for taking the time to post....saved me a ton! I owe you a keg of beer!
Cheers
Haha! Thanks man I knew I couldn’t be the only one with the problem.
Thank you! Mine came off today. Same exact ISSUES 😒. I was packing. Now I can try this
Thank you I have been looking for this solution for a week and change. I've replaced the keypad and all already!
Yea man! No problem. I have a feeling alot of folks are going to be going through the same thing in the coming years.
Yes, I replaced the keypad and still had the liftgate ajar lit up. I am going to try the fuse.
We have had weird flashing from our keypad for a while; especially when wet or iced. It finally died and took the fuse with it. Followed your instructions and had success. Cost of total repair so far, (ordering new keypad soon), $6.29 Thanks !
Same thing happened to my wife and son driving down the highway. The adhesive and grommets Ford uses are trash!
Big time! There is a recall on the rail covers right now because they are flying off while people are driving and causing wrecks. I think the official ford fix for that one is to use double sided tape🙄
@jaswan79 yes we just took it in and got that fixed a few weeks ago. Ours were rattling...not so sure the fix is that great.
Thank you so much, i will just add change your fuse first before buy a new keypad , my felt off but after change the fuse it still working so save some more bucks . I only spent 5 dollars fixings this issue.
Your a life saver bro THANKYOU
The same thing happened on my 2016 explorer yesterday. the adhesive came undone and the keypad flipped down. That's when the liftgate ajar light came on. I was lucky to stumble across this video, for the fuse for the keypad was blown.
Your Video helped so much THANK you bro the same issue happened to us. Thanks again
Just happened to me on a road trip thank you so much bro!!That is crazy how that shit rigged up
Thanks man. I have the same issue with my 2017 too. Thanks again
Bless you, good sir, 😂 I was looking all over for other fuses
Saved me so much time and money! Thank you for sharing
The best part is this is a recall item for this exact thing happening. We went to the dealer they said $1000 to fix it and that it’s not covered under the recall 🙄
I have been waiting for them to recall this. They already recalled for the rails coming off.
I got a letter in the mail saying it was recalled and they were working on a solution to fix the issue and would inform me when they did.
Same here I’m in the same boat, my tailgate wouldn’t open at all and my side keypad panel came off too.
I have the exact same issue. Checking the fuse now. Thank you!
THANK YOU!!
The EXACT thing happened to me and this is exactly the info I need. Thank you for taking the time to explain it so well. I am so appreciative of you posting this!
Thank you for making this video! I had the exact same issue and was able to fix it thanks to this 🎉
You are a life saver. Thank You a billion times.
You are the man! Identical situation!
Saved me hours of research. Thanks
Thanks so much for the info Same problem with my car
Man your a life saver
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! My keypad popped off the other day and that’s exactly what happens to me.
Took it to the shop and they said it wasn’t the fuses, going to try this now that I see the video . Hoping it works!
Hope it works for you! Let me know how it worked out.
@@jaswan79 it worked! Thank you sir!
Awesome, that just saved me so much time. Thanks.

i was driving and the keyless bad It came out of the lift door and remained hanging on the wire, at the same time i got the trunk light is open in the dashboard and inside car light always open
Now the entry bad light not open and the trunk also
please advice if i have to change same fuse
thanks
Thanks!! I saved a hundreds of $$$$$$$
Thank you so much
This just happens to my wife's 2017 but there is now an official recall from Ford on the issue of the trim piece falling off
@@dlabarge9453 they actually issued a recall on a separate trim piece, not the key pad, but I have a feeling the keypad will be soon.
This just happened to us. Gonna try and see if it fixes it
Let me know if it works out
@@jaswan79 it worked!!! Thanks a bunch
So keyped is no good anymore?
Probably not because where the wires get frayed is right at the base of the keypad and you don’t have enough wire to work with to splice them. Now I’m not an expert, just your average Joe, someone might be able to open the keypad up and solder but when you can buy a new pad for $50 or so on Amazon it’s not worth the time trying to me.
I owe you a beer!!! Thank you!! Please send me your Venmo, I could kiss you! Thanks for the video!
Haha! No need! This is all the reward I need ☺️
Just had this happen to me yesterday. I’m curious to see what the dealership says but I’ve also contacted ford’s customer satisfaction center and I’m pretty sure they’re aware of the issue smh I’d much rather repair this on my own if they’re not gonna cover it because this seems to be a consistent issue and potential hazard while driving
Yea it’s as much as a hazard as the roof rails coming off that they have already recalled.
OMG this happened to my 2018 explorer a couple months ago I had to replace my battery because of it! Never would’ve thought the two would be connected! Dealer told me I needed a new hatch latch! But ok so even after replacing the fuse and the lift gate working again the keyless entry pad still needed to be replaced? I see a lot of people commenting that they don’t use theirs and that’s not me lol I used mine all the time before it stopped working so just trying to see so I can order everything together
Yea more than likely because the wires get frayed right where it runs into the keypad and that is what caused the short and blown fuse. If you connect the old keypad it will more than likely cause another short. The replacement ones are not too expensive on Amazon.
Got you ok! Like everyone else….THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Do you have to disconnect the keypad or would it be ok to just replace the fuse? Thanks.
Yes, if you don’t disconnect it, or replace it with a new one it will just short out again
Do I have to replace the keypad or can I just replace the fuse I never use the keypad and I just bought new sticky things and stuck it back on the door
No, just make sure not to reconnect it or it will just keep blowing fuses. I did the same thing. I literally have never used that keypad.
So it fixed my lift gate issue now the drivers door open light won’t turn off and the lock unlock doesn’t work just on the driver’sdoor
I’m not sure what that could be. Maybe another fuse blew. I would check the manual and see what the fuse is for that area. I guarantee you it’s gonna be in that same panel under the driver side dash.
This just happened to me today on my 2016 explorer. wtf.
Man, this low rent mechanic don't know nothin!
