From Alabama SUPERSTAR to Out of The NFL in 3 Years (What Happened to Tim Williams?)

  • Alabama produces a ton of NFL talent and great defensive lineman, but the subject of todays video (Tim Williams) didn't live up to the hype. He was a big time recruit coming out of high school and became a big time player at Alabama but his draft stock tanked and his NFL career was labeled a BUST, so what happened?

Williams is still with the Riders but that could just be because they haven't played a single game or held a training camp in over a year. But effort and problems notwithstanding after looking at his size and speed he was likely never suited to the NFL. Physically speaking he's well suited for our 3 down passing game but his next problem may be that he won't be able to hide any lack of effort or attitude problems in an 9 team league where the size of the field and the speed of the game seems to magnify personal effort,
So, here's hoping that he can get his career back on track especially since there are no guaranteed contracts in the CFL. A fact which means if he has one off field issue or one bad game where he gives up on a play he'll likely be gone and replaced with one of the other former College Superstars who weren't quite right for the NFL pool.
The potential for our game appears to be there but, is the will and the discipline?

There is no need to talk about the academic standards either as Bama went behind the scenes to get Eddie Lacy eligible and he was dumb.
Never really cared for Williams watching his highlights in highschool and I guess the staff didn't care much either. He was a one trick pony for Bama as well. They are all known to pay players and all 3 schools have been place on scholarship reductions and other penalties for recruitment issues. He's not the only top Louisiana guy who spurned LSU to go to Alabama. Landon Collins did the same thing and Landon's mother showed up displeasure on national TV when he picked Alabama. Same thing with Joe McKnight. He picked USC over LSU in an epic upset. Tim was unstoppable. He was quick AND had moves, you could not block him. NO TEAM COULD BLOCK HIM AT THE D1 LEVEL. Surrounded by talent would make things more difficult as it would've firstly been too difficult to even see the field. As a former high school teacher who had a few students I know go Division I, recruiters hear things. Parties too much, smokes too much, heavy drinker, kind of a jerk as a student, or a counselor gives off the vibe that this isn't the best kid without saying it explicitly, etc. Not saying Tim Williams is guilty of any of these things but recruiters do seek out information on players, word gets out and when they hear it from multiple sources they take that into account so that could be the case with him. They just heard one too many stories or just were reading between the lines on what people were saying and decided to back off.

Bro, do you be watching Alabama games? Be honest with me. Yes, Tim’s stats were very good for someone of his stature and usage, and he was a FAN-FAVORITE not a “superstar,” but Tim was NEVER a sure fire first rounder. He was never ever one of top 3-4 players just on that side of the ball. He was a gadget, sub-package demon that exploited the 1on1s because of the work that guys like Tomlinson/Robinson/Reed/Allen/Payne/Anderson were doing to free him up. He was always just a fast, undersized OLB that was not an every down player like a Ryan Anderson or even Will Anderson/Chris Allen now. We loved him but he was never a better player on defense than Minkah/Jon Allen/A’Shawn/Jarran/Ryan Anderson/Tomlinson/Reuben Foster/Rashaan Evans/Eddie Jackson/Daron Payne. He was never a can’t-miss NFL prospect or an Alabama “superstar.” He was just on probably the best defense this school has ever fielded and benefited greatly from it. Why go out of your way to make a video on sub-package player that wasn’t a first rounder? Save this mess for Dee Milliner or somebody. Can tell you either real young, we’re not watching their games and/or you only looking at stats to decide the basis of your video.

A player may have the skill and talent to stand out at the college level. Even dominate the game. But the in the NFL, every player was a college star. And when you talk about those who start, they are the very best. That is why this story is not exceptional. It is the norm. Football history is littered with superstar college players who never made it in the NFL. Drew Bledsoe or JaMarcus Russell sound familiar?
