- Bobby Caldwell was born August 15, 1951 in Manhattan, NY. He joined his first group The Rooftops while in his teens and then in 1970 his group Katmandu released an album.
One of the few who listened to his album was Little Richard, who hired them to open for him in Las Vegas. This set Caldwell up for his exit from Katmandu when he joined the Johnny Winter band for one album.
His next endeavor was working with Lee Dorman (Iron Butterfly) for another album. He moved on again this time joining Rick Derringer (The McCoys) on his All American Boy LP in 1971. He continued his association with rock icons when he played alongside ex-Yardbird Keith Relf in Armageddon for one album.
He continued working with Derringer, Winter and Dorman, creating radio jingles and notably writing and recording the theme for The Mickey Mouse Club.
Signing with TK Records subsidiary Cloud Records, he recorded 1978's "Bobby Caldwell" LP that gave him his sole Top 40 hit, the #9 single "What You Won't Do For Love". Subsequent follow ups received lesser attention on the pop charts, but his music was popular on the R&B stations. Caldwell thinks "that my album is nice, you can listen to it over and over, but I know there is nothing there that really sticks its foot up your ass." But this one is an earworm and it has grown in popularity as the years go on...his voice is the star here...
He moved to MCA Records and began writing songs for the likes of Dionne Warwick, Peabo Bryson, Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole and Cheryl Lynn. He had a #1 pop hit when Amy Grant and Peter Cetera recorded his "The Next Time I Fall".
Did you know that Bobby starred in a theatrical production of "The Rat Pack"? He played Frank Sinatra. - Hudba

In memory of Bobby Caldwell who passed away on March 14, 2023 at the age of 71. I was driven to check out DiscoCat’s refreshment of a hit that was all over the radio in 1978 and 1979. Here’s a slow jam that was very good in the first place, and it’s even better thanks to my favorite DJ. I hope you cats and kittens feel the same way after giving this song a listen.

Songs like "What You won't do for love" is why I love music from this era. It wasn't about what the artist looked like, but how they sounded. This is still a staple on R&B stations to this day.
I was born in February 1996, but Free by Deniece Williams, this song, and many other songs makes me wish that I was born back then. Music had more soul and passion back then, I absolutely love and respect this era of music. Nothing can ever replace it.
I feel that same way, too, since I was a kid during the 1950s decade. Skin color, age and all that outward appearance never mattered to me as much as great music.
If this is not a staple or fixture in the FM and AM radio stations, it should be.
