3. the water drains away (using dispensers to pick up the water).

5. The door should work in the reverse order too opening, closing, filling with water, then opening from the outside (underwater half).
If anyone else would love to see this built please help him see.

A few tips for everyone who wants to build bases inside a cave, this is all from experience:
-Carve them out so they wont have absurd spurt outs
-Make sure it fits with what you want, if you want overgrown, you should probably do a little more carving out
-Dont hold yourself in one place, if you got lucky like I did with 4 massive cave systems, branch out slowly
-If you go with modded like I did, make certain cave branches or tunnels designated for that mod and add signs or an item frame with a block from that mod. It makes it a lot easier, trust me, you will get confused if you dont organize it by mod
-If you do Hardcore, get charcoal torches and light it up while you mine for coal, iron, and Diamond. Creepers even with full iron can still insta-kill you if you're not careful

I built my base in a server as my version/vision of the stark/avengers tower, almost totally eyeballed. And I gotta say, its one of the first bases I've built in this game over a very long time that I'm very proud of. It has several floors where I can fit farms or decorative/trophy stuff, a very large underground area where I can still fit quite a few things, and I already made villager-powered crop farms on some of the floors of my tower that give me tons of food, as well as a supersmelter, XP farm, concrete breaker, and iron farm. Still plenty of space to fit small-ish farms/contraptions as I need. And plenty of space to make a couple annexed builds. I think your and grian's tips really helped out a lot. And its something I'm finally truly proud of. And the best thing now is, due to the massive rooms I dug up for my stuff, I now have plenty of random blocks to fill in the nearby ravines/caves. It was probably easier for me since the server has a shop system, but not everything can be bought from it, and slowly but surely I'm relying less and less on it.
Mumbo, in Sahara you should build a coffee shop so people could get some coffee while they shop
Maybe recreate the coffee tables from S5 but use them as coffee tables. They would obviously be smaller, though.

Well, here's the thing though.
If you don't *need* a giant base, why go through all the pain and misery to make one?
If your 40x40 fortress is all you need for a base, be happy with it.
Mumbo said that scale is better than detail. I disagree.
What's the point of building a *GIANT 500x500x100 CITADEL OF EPICNESS* if you can't even fill it, or if you don't have the time or the resources to make it look good enough to satisfy you?
The smaller the base, the easier it would be to upgrade it to your liking, and thus the more time you can spend doing so.

#1 BASE__
Funny story for the "scale over detail" thing you mentioned. I was in a build competition hosted by MCProHosting, and the theme was "Winter". I decided that I wanted to make a detailed mountain range with a christmas town at the bottom. Upon completion of the mountians though.... they were exceedingly short. So in about 10 hours time, after already about 15 hours of work, I flipped the script and doubled the size of the mountians, put a massive bridge & train on them, and built the christmas village at the bottom like plan. went back and detailed it later, and after a few weeks, i won the competition. I even did a video on my channel showcasing the absolute scale of the thing in shaders, if you're genuinely intrigued by it (not trying to self promo, I'm really just proud of the work i did). Fifty hours of work, for a free Xbox One S, i"d say it was worth it! I can 1,000,000% agree, scale over detail, in any situation
Nice!!!
@@beardyfoxy that is true, hehehe. But I had fun doin' it, so I'm content :)

ok i got so much inspiration from your spherical base i’m gonna try to build something like it in survival. (i’m gonna look up tutorials on how to build domes / circles in minecraft too)
Since figuring out how to progress to mid game play in survival I've spent most of my game time in creative mode trying to sort out how to: 1. Build bigger in my style 2. Ensure efficiency of the layout 3. Include all of the things plus their redstone 4. Leave room for expansion 5. Remember to have decorative spaces. So far it's a big puzzle in colorful wool.
An aquarium is something I hadn't thought to add. One would look nice near the enchanting area and I can combine that with an afk fishing farm. Thanks for the inspiration.

Love the video. Brings back memories i would build in my sleep then wake up to grind the resources not to even build the thing i originally wanted to build .
Thanks for the tips! I'm thinking of doing something like this myself. Though I might get bored and build a colossal ship covered in buildings instead.
Please make a endless flying machine spiral staircase. I've been trying for a while but it keeps falling apart.
Is it even possible? Wait, now that I've asked, someone will do it. Will you send me the world so I can see it? I don't have the guts to build flying machines, I can barely build storage :p
Catherine Reed I find that it helps to understand the principles behind each system. It makes them a lot more approachable. I didn't start doing Redstone until a few weeks ago and I'm really close with the staircase, or at least it seems like it.
I was literally just struggling with this in my world.. Are you a mind reader, Mumbo?
Is your world single player? I feel my biggest setback is that I’m alone and there’s not community to interact with.

Thank you for making this video. I have been facing some struggles when it comes to life and art and due to self help culture being so toxic and not caring for others well being i actually turn to videos about how to enjoy games and apply that to my life and my projects and this helped me beyond belief. I had been doing art for some time now and for years i had felt pressure to make stuff and be successful due to expectations put on me that i will do great. But as a result I suffered from imposter syndrome and didn't feel like a true artist, causing me to freeze and not be able to create anything without that external pressure.
Luckily I overcame that somewhat, but then i was faced with another challenge this video helped me realize. I was making projects but i still wasn't feeling motivated. I knew it wasn't my lack of love for the medium because I would animate other small things and love to do it, but for some reasons these larger projects i assigned to myself to get back into art wasn't fun to do. But then i realized they had no purpose. Similar to your Fish town, my projects were just being made to do something rather than with an intended purpose like most art has. This led to not enjoying the project and having little motivation. Its as if i wanted to get back into Minecraft but only built stuff to build stuff with no purpose for what i was making. No Redstone farms to help others, or piston doors to solve problems, no buildings that make a world feel lived in with small details that tell a story, and no terraforming to make everything nice and smooth. Only fishing villages.
You helped me realize that my projects need purpose to matter to me and others. So sincerely thank you for your accidental self help video.

4:44 no grian told you it was a bad idea
note: when Mumbo said "test things out", I recommend actually testing things out instead of building the whole thing, I've built my bases in creative mode before and I got burnt out even before I started in survival
Mumbo: "dont make a build without a purpose"
His useless machine: "am I a joke to you?"
Me: "ah looks like you UNO Reverse card's yourself to death"

Mumbo: horroble block for building
Grian: Hmm yeah
Sponge: Hold My Beer
Spongebob is Triggered
No Grian likes bricks
Bring scaffolding, I like slime
Scaffolding block: Am I a joke?
Learned from Etho yesterday that scaffolding can also be used to measure vertical height. Pretty neat.
It came out literally 3 days after the video was uploaded
My base looks like a normal little mountainside hut but when you enter it's this huge base of caves, corridors, stairs and barrels and I love it
one thing i learned while doing a slew of survival playthroughs is build for utility first, THEN build for pretty.
basically, build your farms, your storage, your "utility things" before you do any base designing (though it is also important to determine how thick your walls are going to be before you start placing things. are they going to be 1 block thick? 2? 3?). this will basically help you in the beautification portion of the build because you have a cohesive "minimum". another thing, don't be afraid to build vertically. in fact, it's encouraged you do so. this will allow you to afk and have more of your farms loaded. sure, it's not as useful when you have limitations (such as multiple mob farms), but i've personally found that when i overnight afk, i tend to end up with a surplus while specializing my farming (note mumbo's cobblestone farm).
Mumbo: Builds amazing things (including circles)
Me: builds haphazard, offcentered circles and diorite houses.... RIP
Diorite: an easy alternative to quartz and concrete, but looks awful, except maybe smooth diorite in small amounts
What about pure glowstone shacks... that always looks nice. Lol
OffroadNinja so useful, yet so ugly
Lol
Never have to worry about lighting
