    The race remains strangely unpublicised. I used to live near Atlantic City where they finished. I first heard of them upon seeing finishers and inquiring. No (or nearly) mention in local media.
    It's an amazing race that I'm surprised doesn't get way more attention.

    • @johnfromflorida9441
      @johnfromflorida9441 Pƙed rokem

      Yes, it was a lot cooler to finish in Atlantic City and it made more sense because it really went from coast to coast, that thing said Annapolis is not even on the coast... it'd be cool if they put it back in Atlantic City again....

    For those complaining about the fact that support is mandatory, there is a reason. The very first person to attempt the race unsupported way back in the '80's was struck by a vehicle and died as a result.
    This race takes place on the open road, and the support vehicle makes the competitors visible.

    I got to crew for Martin Grurbele (guy in the thumbnail) last year. I can't imagine all that riding, but it's pretty special being part of the crew and meandering across the states, especially since Martin managed 6th overall and won the Masters divisions. I would highly recommend crew if you are ever asked!

    It is a great event and most of the organizers and volunteers are great people. I had the opportunity to be part of the volunteer team last year and it amazed me the commitment the riders do to complete it. The sad thing about it is that not too many people go to finish area to congratulate and recognize the riders. I might have a mariachi playing for them this year if permitted. hehehe!!!

  • @fraew
    @fraew Pƙed 7 lety +2

    The mandatory support team makes this event too much of a rich person's game - particularly those coming from overseas. Cycling events should be accessible to anybody, so i must prefer the concept of self-supported Brevet or adventure race type events. I completed the 3000km off-road event Tour Aotearoa here in New Zealand back in 2016 and will be repeating again next year. For those interested - it's a terrific event, I spent a few nights camping in the wild in some of New Zealand's more remote spots, road thousands of kilometers of beautifully scenic, tranquil trails and back roads, met a variety of people, experienced pain and release, and just loved the experience from start to finish.

    • @fraew
      @fraew Pƙed 7 lety

      BTW Tour Aotearoa has a mandatory 6hr rest every day, and it's perfectly fine to ride with other riders. It's not a race, though pushing yourself towards the 'minimum' finish time of 10 days is a very very hard task that even the likes of season Tour Divide rider Olly Whalley struggled to reach.

  • @robbchastain3036
    @robbchastain3036 Pƙed 7 lety +10

    I think it is cool and epic and all of that, but I think it would better serve itself and the sport if there were a mandated seven-hour rest period each day, say from two to ten each morning after the first two days of racing. This would ensure that nobody is sleepless in the saddle and it would create daily stages, as it were, and make it more fun to follow, in my opinion--each morning we could see, hmm, who is where and who is nowhere. And something akin to this has been done for years in Alaska with the Iditarod sled dog race--there is, for example, one mandated 24-hour rest period for dogs and mushers alike and that's cool--it gives everyone a chance to rest and reset as they face days and nights of racing through the Alaskan winter and that's epic, too.

      Pro tip 5km = 3 miles / 10km = 6 miles, so you can easily guesstimate things.

      I'm British so I can convert between imperial and metric systems in my head so I don't need Google conversions.
      Road cycling is mostly a European sport with the UCI based in Switzerland and the biggest Grand Tours based in France and Italy. That's why the metric system is traditional in road cycling.
      How many yards are in 10 miles? Do that in your head. Metric system is better, it's simple.

      Why not give an actual challenging number to multiply by instead of 10...all we have to do is add a zero at the end of 1,760. And last I checked this thing called CZcams is an American creation, perhaps we should force the use of inches, feet and miles on any video!?!? Or maybe we just not worry ourselves with such petty requests.

      " CZcams is an American creation, perhaps we should force the use of inches, feet and miles on any video!?!?" I'd hate to burst your little "Murica fuck yeah" bubble, but just because something is American doesn't mean it can't be improved... the imperial system is retarded end of story.
      To be honest I feel like if they bothered to start the video mentioning both units they should try and do it all the way through the video. it's not a big deal, but there's no defending the fact that 1. metrics are better, 2. as mentioned it's mostly a European thing, 3. most of the Globe uses metric sooo yeah GCN could bother doing both or just metric. or 4. fuck it it's not a big deal.
