- Owner’s review of a silver over black leather Mercedes Benz SL320 (also known as R129). These are the last of the over-engineered Mercedes, so the build quality really impresses and we're proud to own the car. We purchased the vehicle in December 2018, so we’ve had a few years’ of ownership prior to making this review video. The car features the fantastic glass ‘panorama’ roof (removable with a soft-top beneath) so it’s great for both winter and summer cruising. We opted for the six-cylinder 320 as it’s a tried and tested powerplant and we have other cars that will out-perform the SL even with a larger engine spec. The SL320 is a superb grand tourer, which we’ve really enjoyed over the years and continue to drive regularly. Hope you enjoy the video.

The first R129 I spotted in the flesh was the summer of 1990, instantly thought it was a stunning looking, designed car, especially the front portions grill bumper etc, and 32 years later, it still stands out, as a classic, if I had the spare room and cash I would have one for those summer Sunday afternoon runs, I'm lucky to have a Jaguar XJ X358, and a 1979 Mitsubishi Sapporo (still in bits) but from that day back in 1990 I would love to get my hands on what I'd would say was the last of the "when the engineers had full control" built Mercedes.
Agreed, I view the R129 as the last of the over-engineered Mercs and just love the glass panorama roof. Mind you, it’s in the garage at the moment with a sporadic electrical fault that prevents starting. We’ve changed the battery & fuel pump and hope that it’s just down to a corroded relay. Should be back on the road in a couple of days. Lots of further pics on Instagram @swiss.road.trip if you’re interested.

Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
lovely car from the golden age of benz. hope u enjoy it .engine is super clean ,so i'm sure its in good hands and in the long future some young guys will enjoy it too.
Thank you, very kind. We are just custodians of these vehicles. I do my best to keep my cars in top condition.
I hope younger people do get to enjoy these classics. But first, one has to appreciate the classics as opposed to being treated like a kid’s toy to show off in, abuse, and mistreat.
Yes, quite, if you abuse them they’ll soon break down and they’re not cheap to repair.
Thank you for the video
You’re very welcome, glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for the video, it was delightful to watch
Glad you enjoyed it
Just noticed these cars the other day. Likethe squared off boot shape and general retro looks.
They have quite a timeless design, I find, hope you enjoyed the video.
my dream car ... looking to buy one in the UK ... 15K sterling plus
That’s a good starting point for an SL320, but the best cars are more like £18-20k upwards. Check out the SL Shop in Stratford-Upon-Avon as they always have several in stock. That’s where I bought mine.
Nice video! Can't wait to get an SL 500 ASAP !!
Enjoy it, make sure it’s a good one. They’re quite complex cars, so breakdowns can be tricky to diagnose and repair (in my experience).
i WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU POSITION THE TROLLY AT THE REAR OF THE CAR AND PUT A QUILT OR THICK PAD OVER THE REAR OF THE CAR BEFORE REMOVING THE HARD TOP JUST IN CASE IT SLIPS OUT OF YOUR HANDS. ASK ME HOW I KNOW.
Yes, it was quite silly of me to position the trolley where I had done. It is quite a big awkward thing and made largely of glass (!) so I’m pleased we didn’t break it (or the car). To be fair, we did film our first try at removing the top - the footage would’ve ended up in the bin had it gone wrong!
How strange I had an exact Mondale t same time had exact same SL…..Ferrari went after 2 years as had issues but still have SL
Funnily enough, my 3.4t is working fine but the SL320 stalled on me just this morning! Bought a replacement fuel cap at Halfords, seems fine now. Must now order proper R129 cap online.
