  • "Rotary OY Chama To Cumbres Pass". The C&TS RR's K27 #463 locomotive moved the D&RGW OY Rotary Snow Plow from Chama to Antonito for some mechanical and cosmetic work in anticipation of a winter 2020 demonstration that will kick off the railroad’s 50th anniversary year.

    What would be good, is if the co ordinates could be added to the footage somehow or if we could get to see the co ords at a particular spot and then we can view that on Google earth. The Quora web page offers photographers from all around the world a place to show their pictures and with just about every one, I need to ask where it is or where was it taken.

      It’s original one, I absolutely adore it. The bell recently has been clapper rung as all the others are due to availability of parts, but historically was always piston rung, up to a few years ago. The whistle has had some work done over the past 30 years, but supposedly would rattle an engine crews fillings loose.

      Hi jon , thanks for watching, The weight in working order of just the rotary is 156000 pounds as delivered without tender. The engine weight is 136650 pounds. So on 4% grade it's a good push I think.

    • @whitcraft4578

      Hi Farmer Dave, Thanks for watching. Good question. They pushed it up hill for photo opportunities and safety. In a worst case scenario (brakes fail) and the rotary came loose on end of train going up hill it could run away down hill. They did turn and put it on end going down hill for same but opposite safety reason. I will post the rotary turn and short down hill run soon.

      @@kevdoom2 It's been down awhile now, that engine sitting in the yard missing it's headlight ws likely the 497, from what I hear it was too big for them at the time, when it came time for an overhaul thay just retired it and left it for another day.

    • @kevdoom2
      @kevdoom2 Před 5 lety +2

      @@CoalChrome The locomotive sitting in the yard is almost definitely 483 the smoke box door isn't the right style for a 37 and that's the spot 483 has been occupying for many years now. 497 is somewhat disliked because the k37's in general are harder on the track. It's not retired, just awaiting it's overhaul which is pretty far down the list because of how rough on the tracks it is. I'm sure it'll run again but it's pretty far down the line. I just thought by your comment they officially said it's over and done with.

    • @jacobwoods8738
      @jacobwoods8738 Před 4 lety +1

      This is my favourite D&RGW whistle and what most engines carried up to the 1940s. Everything else has Chime whistles, so it is fitting to have a hooter on 1, which 463 carries. It is original. Same as 4501 carries the Princeton 3 Chime at TVRM, it is not a pretty whistle, but authentic to the engine. As for Big Boy, it never had a hooter, always a long bell. N&W used hooters, which 1218 kept, as did Reading which 2102 has. Authenticity is important and people today seem to forget that all too often. 473 carries a passenger whistle at Durango and for years everything else was a “standard” 5 chime, as it was restored in 2006 to compliment the bumble bee paintscheme.
