Technological advances in MS-based proteomics: deep visual and single cell proteomics for precision medicine
Speaker: Matthias Mann, Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Germany
    Chair: Maria Flocco, AstraZeneca, UK
Co-Chair: Stephen McLaughlin, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK
Matthias Mann describes how recent advances in mass spectrometry have allowed more comprehensive investigations of global proteomics and construction of protein interaction networks. He explained how his recent work on developing new technology and data analysis aims to make proteomics biologically and clinically relevant. He detailed new methods for single cells proteomics overcoming the challenges of low sample volumes by increasing the sensitivity and reproducibility. This has been combined with new machine learning image analysis coupled with laser microdissection to allow cell-type specific proteome analysis from tissue samples. Matthias gives examples of applications to understand the proteomic changes leading to disease states revealing new targets for treatments and the temporal changes during cancer development. In addition, he shows how these techniques can be applied to normal tissue and organoid development to characterise spatial and cell-specific proteomes.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Our scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
