    Mine arrived yesterday and it's completely open. It looks like a good replacement for the UV-5R as a cheap knockaround radio with some extra features and a heftier feel. I made a note of the "8 + PTT" just in case, since once I saw the rig did 220, well that means I need a second one, since none of my other 15 or so HT's will do 220😁Now I'm covered just in case the next one is locked down.

    245-247 is a unlicensed business and (CB) personal comms band in many parts of the world. also know as red radios because of their red cases. lets the police know they are legal. very common in Thailand for hotels, construction, security guards, malls, big box stores. 12,500 spacing NBFM. Vertically polarized stacked Yagi beams are all the rage here on 245Mhz for long distance VHF voice comms.

    I actually bought one thinking it could do gmrs stuff on A , and other stuff on B. Thats just not the case. Mine does rx/tx fully out of the box. Oddly the first 24 memory channels were in fact named gmrs , but there's no way to use them seperately and scan them separately from other stuff you might have programmed. At least manually.
    Edit : I inadvertently erased some of the first 24 channels , so i tried the factory reset which took it to like super unlocked , and didn't go back to whatever programming it came with. All channels are blank now. No gmrs. Yes i can rename the first 24 channels gmrs 1-24 but the point is this thing is not a gmrs radio. It's a dual band radio. Nothing more. My mistake. But at least it's not a complete loss. It is functional for listening to emergency frequencies .

The "Big Three" seem to be stuck in the 80s with features, only adding the absolute bare minimum to survive - and even then, only surviving off their names. "We're hams, we can fix this". How is it that after studying for any of the Amateur Radio license exams there are still folks in the U.S. who haven't figured out that some situations shouldn't be fixed? Just because some guy in China, a communist country I might add, says it's OK to use a radio he's pitching doesn't make it OK to own. These radios, any of them from 10 years ago to the present fail to meet the standards set forth by the FCC. I'm talking about out of [Amateur] band capability to spurious radiations. GMRS is not Amateur and Amateur is not GMRS. Stop buying junk that allows for the two services to work on one radio. The FCC rules don't allow it and we shouldn't buy radios that do. Get a GMRS radio if you're licensed for it, and get one that's compliant. Instead the Chinese junk look at the Japanese brands who are diligent about clean transmissions and locking transmissions to the Amateur bands. Is the reason hams are so "ga-ga" for the Chinese junk solely based on the low price of a radio? The most basic, least expensive Yaesu, Icom or Kenwood single or dual band HT is worth every penny over any of the Chinese junk radios. If all you care about is the price and not the quality of your signal or the engineering of the radio, then junk you will buy and junk you will have. It took many years for the first Baofeng radio to meet any FCC requirements, not because they couldn't but because they wouldn't do it. Ask yourself why are Chinese radios so inexpensive. It can be for any of the following reasons: child labor, unsafe manufacturing conditions, "copy and paste" manufacturing instead of their own patented designs, stealing technology from the West and the Japanese, incentives from the communist regime, and the list goes on. Have you ever wondered why the Baofeng UV-5R is still being sold? It's because despite periodic changes to the line, it's still the same junk underneath. On top of the already junky radio in your hand do you really want anything to do with supporting a communist country? If so, know then that you can be bought cheaply. Save your money and buy something that's made in the West (this includes Japan because they at least compete openly and make FCC compliant gear). If it takes you a little more time to save up for a Yaesu then consider yourself fortunate enough to own a really good radio.
    Generally speaking, hams today have it easy. Very decent used gear with no vacuum tubes, more bands, no expiring Novice license after two years, no code, getting your license over the Internet instead waiting 6-8 weeks for it to show up in the mail. We live in a world of instant everything. 'Gimme gimme and I want it yesterday'. There's value in waiting, putting off the inclination for instant gratification and preparing your station for the arrival of quality equipment.
    Instead of the showcasing obvious shortcomings of this junk, I'd rather see an unboxing (and I usually think unboxing videos are useless dribble) of a bare bones, basic radio followed by the setup of fixed or mobile antennas, speaker mic and programing the rig using the keypad or with Chirp. A video like that says, "Here's a basic featured rig setup in a way you can work every repeater in your area knowing your signal is clean and compliant."

      Thanks for the comments Glen - I have a variety of videos on my channel, this one is just news to let the viewer know what they are getting into if they buy this radio. If you check out the other comments, some people say "Thanks, I'm staying away" and others say "Thanks, I'll go buy this" - I hope the buyers are responsible licensed hams and "do the right thing" As a ham, it is perfectly legal for us to take a GMRS radio and modify it to work on 2m or 70cm ham bands - assuming we do it right.

    • @dpsflyboy
      @dpsflyboy Pƙed rokem

      @@temporarilyoffline Where in the FCC regulations does it say that it is legal to modify a radio that is NOT FCC certified to transmit on 2m and 70cm and make it transmit on those frequencies? Your last statement if FALSE. I'm dealing with this with some people in our ERC group that have been buying the family GMRS license and then getting radios like this but also using them on 2m and 70cm with out getting their Technician Amateur radio license. Used to be important to have ethics all the time, not just situational ethics.

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  Pƙed rokem

      @dpsflyboy what you said and what I said are in agreement - a licensed ham is allowed to modify any radio to operate within their license class. An unlicensed individual is not allowed to transmit in the ham bands (without the station control operator present). Modifying radios is how ham radio got its start, where kits come from and truly in the spirit of the hobby/service.

    • @dpsflyboy
      @dpsflyboy Pƙed rokem

      @@temporarilyoffline Again, show me the FCC regulation that allows someone to alter a certified radio outside of it's certification. Ham radio got it's start from inventors scratch building radios from parts and having to comply with FCC regulations when they came into affect, not modifing certified radios.

    • @oobihdahboobeeboppah
      @oobihdahboobeeboppah Pƙed rokem

      Guys, I think you're taking some of my comments out of context; allow me to clarify.
      What I said:
      "Just because some guy in China, a communist country I might add, says it's OK to use a radio he's pitching doesn't make it OK to own. Get a GMRS radio if you're licensed for it, and get one that's compliant."
      I didn't say anything about fixing up our gear, converting say, LMR for VHF/UHF Amateur use, or anything of the sort. If you're old enough to remember buying old commercial gear to put on the ham bands then you also know enough to build your own transmitter. What I did say and perhaps should've been clearer about is we "shouldn't" fix problematic gear that's dumped on the consumer (junk), as he points out around 30 seconds into the video. I won't touch imported radios that ignore our laws just because they're affordable. All of the above is my many decades of being a ham, along with my callouse opinion on Chinese junk radios.
      Now, a look at the law.
      As Amateurs, we're mostly concerned with FCC Rules Part 97. However, when we encounter equipment that allows transmission in multiple services (Amateur, FRS, GMRS, MURS), that does not specifically have FCC certification for that, it cannot be imported, sold or transmitted in the US. However, uncertified radios have flooded across the world. Even though hams are allowed to work on their own equipment, the same cannot be said for users of FRS, GMRS, or MURS. We have (or should have) the technical skills to work on our gear whereas under the law, users of the other services haven't the same requirements. Therefore, FRS, GMRS, MURS gear needs to work "out of the box" in their respective service frequency allocations. As I said before we're concerned with part 97, but these other services are covered more by part 95. I've included a couple of key sections below:
      § 95.591 Sales of FRS combination radios prohibited. [< Note the term "combination radios"]
      Effective September 30, 2019, no person shall sell or offer for sale hand-held portable radio equipment capable of operating under this subpart (FRS) and under any other licensed or licensed-by-rule radio services in this chapter (devices may be authorized under this subpart with part 15 unlicensed equipment authorizations).
      Section 95.1761 covers GMRS transmitters:
      (c) No GMRS transmitter will be certified for use in the GMRS if it is equipped with a frequency capability not listed in § 95.1763, unless such transmitter is also certified for use in another radio service for which the frequency is authorized and for which certification is also required. No GMRS transmitter will be certified for use in the GMRS if it is equipped with the capabilities to operate in services that do not require equipment certification, such as the Amateur Radio Service. All frequency determining circuitry (including crystals) and programming controls in each GMRS transmitter must be internal to the transmitter and must not be accessible from the exterior of the transmitter operating panel or from the exterior of the transmitter enclosure.
      (d) Effective December 27, 2017, the Commission will no longer issue a grant of equipment authorization for hand-held portable unit transmitter types under both this subpart (GMRS) and subpart B of this part (FRS).
      *****
      So guys, bottom line: the FCC says that FRS radios cannot be used for GMRS, and GMRS radios cannot be used for FRS, MURS, or Amateur. Yet, the bulk of the Chinese junk radios being imported do exactly that! AND we're the ones buying them!
      I appreciate all of [most really] the content coming out from the plethora of ham channels on CZcams. But at the end of the day, it's my license I have to protect from poor operating practices. Me. I alone have to be accountable for the signals I put on the air AND how they get there. We can try to retrofit the Chinese junk but is it really worth it? In my opinion, no, it's not. Go ahead, dissect it, but is that really the best use of your time and talents?
