As someone who's worked on one of these broadcast in the smallest of ways, generally they look for storylines, up close and personal type stuff...it's an NBC edict almost.
The fact that these announcers flunked out on the hometown story of the race, an Oregon Track and Field LEGEND, and two time Olympic Medalist, that they could not find the time, LOL, in a 28min race to honor the dude.
-Amateurs. I'm embarrassed for them, that they said they'd update us on Rupp in a moment...and then flopped. I'm embarrassed for them.
A man who has a silver medal at the Olympics in this very event, is racing likely, his last track race ever, to experience the Hayward joy one more time...and that he gets his nose into the race in the final laps...that's exciting!
Obviously he didn't have the closing speed wheels because he trains for the marathon now etc.
A real missed opportunity to honor a home town legend, and an American star distance runner, who's done so much to promote the sport and give the others the inspiration to know that they can mix it up with the best in the world at distance events. The totally flunked, with nearly 30 minutes to give this legend 30 seconds of honor and props. Embarassed for them.
They failed to do their homework. There were other examples of poor announcing in the race too. Amateurs! All too often more poor distance announcing for our dwindled sport.
