  • This video shows my build of the A-10 Thunderbolt II re-released by Italeri in 2016 as part of their Gulf War 25th Anniversary series. I had this kit in my stash for quite some time but postponed building it due to my mixed experiences with the Italeri brand. Being a kit from the 1990s it has some nice details but also some construction flaws and fit issues and is not quite up to date with today’s standards. However, you can build a really nice model from it if you are willing to put in a bit of extra effort.
    I decided to build the A-10A version which saw combat during the Gulf War in 1991. These planes had the three-color European Woodland Camouflage scheme which I really like. Airbrushing it free-hand was a pleasure and it adds to the overall look of the finished model. Regarding the decals and stencils provided by Italeri I had mixed feelings because the provided instructions were completely messed up and were of no real help. So I used photos from actual planes as a reference - also in terms of weathering, dirt stains and the overall look the planes had back in the day.
    Let me know what you think of this build. Your comments and opinions are highly appreciated. Please bear in mind I am not a professional modeler, I just build these models for fun and relaxation and to help regain my mental and physical health.

    You 're now one of my more favorite modelers. The time and effort you take on the most mundane tasks such as scraping seams shows to me that you care to do the best. Many modelers put out out videos as quick as possible and neglect seam lines, flash, pin marks etc, just to have content on their channel. The build on this A10 is superb. Great job!!!

      Thank you very much! 🙂 I’m using the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline two in one. "Two in one" means it's a bundle including two nozzle sets, 0.2mm for details and smaller areas and 0.4mm for larger areas. Of course you can also get it with only one nozzle set. It's not the cheapest airbrush but it is very smooth and of high quality. I love it! It's also easy to clean and maintain and you can get a lot of spare parts and accessories for it. The standard version (which I have) is nickel plated but there's also a chrome plated version available for those who are allergic to nickel. If I were to buy a new one I'd go for the chrome plated version since it also has more abrasion-proof surfaces.

      Danke dir! Ich vermute, dass die 1:48er Anleitung besser ist, habe mir die nämlich ebenfalls als Referenz angeschaut. Es sieht so aus, als hätte Italeri diese für die 1:72er Version recycelt und beim Layout einiges durcheinander geworfen. Ich glaube auch, dass der Decal-Bogen ursprünglich der der 1:48er Version war und nur teilweise geändert wurde. Die Grafik mit der roten Frau zum Beispiel ist viel zu groß. 😉 Jedenfalls viel Spaß beim Bauen deiner A-10! 👍

    Great job! May i ask which airbrush do you use?

    • @RWOModels
      @RWOModels  Před rokem

      Hi there, for this build I used my H&S Evolution Silverline with 0.2mm nozzle. This was the only airbrush I've been using during the first three years in the hobby. I always found it difficult to use since it clogs very easily and the trigger feels a bit inconsistent and not very precise. So last year I wanted to step up my airbrushing and bought a couple of new airbrushes, Sparmax Max-3, Iwata HP-B Plus and Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. All of them are very nice and have an extremely direct and smooth trigger, the Iwatas being more expensive and even better quality than the Sparmax. Although the Eclipse has a 0.35mm nozzle it can still spray very fine detail, and it is an awesome all-around airbrush you can use for almost everything. My latest addition however is the GSI Creos PS-270 with 0.2mm nozzle, and this is a fantastic airbrush! It is extremely comfortable and precise to use, very well made, sprays ridiculously fine detail, for a very attractive price, I highly recommend it! It is also available with a 0.3mm nozzle, called the PS-289, which I guess is a bit more suitable when using heavier paints. Hope this helps, thanks for watching! 🙂

    • @fmascia
      @fmascia Před rokem

      @@RWOModels thanks for the answer. I also use an Eclipse hp-cs but i struggle a lot to obtain fine lines. I use Vallejo Air range colors, with thinner and flow improver, about 8/10psi. Any advice?

    • @RWOModels
      @RWOModels  Před rokem

      Vallejo Model Air apparently tend to clog up the airbrush and cause tip dry on the needle pretty quickly. I guess that's the problem you are experiencing as well. What's your thinning ratio? Don't be afraid to add generous amounts of thinner, sometimes I use 50% thinner or even more. Also your pressure setting seems very low. I used to work with 10-15 psi but have now increased my standard setting to 20-25 psi and gradually decrease if necessary (I have a small air valve on my quick connect). This requires good trigger control, but with a bit of practice you may get used to it. Of all the airbrushes I've been using so far, the Eclipse seems to handle my Vallejo Model Air paints the best since it's specifically designed for thicker paints with larger pigments. Another thing, did you check if your airbrush is perfectly clean? Maybe there is some tiny, hardly visible residue on the needle or in the nozzle preventing proper paint flow. As a last resort I would recommend to try other paint brands. ☺️ For example Mr. Hobby (or Tamiya) colors with their thinners (or Leveling Thinner) is a whole different league.

    • @fmascia
      @fmascia Před rokem

      @@RWOModels i use a thinning ratio of 1/3 (thinner/paint), maybe is too low. I agree with the trigger control you must have iot use these colors, infact i was planning to buy the preset handle to help me. Also the clogging was an issue but now i keep a damp piece of paper at hand to clean the needle. The airbrush is always clean, especially the inner side of the nozzle. I will try, as you suggest, an higher pressure and to adjust the thinning, thank you.

      @RWOModels  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you! Regarding aftermarket products - I don't like it when you have to put hours of work into the armament (and the A-10 has a lot of it) to try and make it look as good as possible and in the end it still leaves quite a lot to be desired. That's what I felt after completing the A-10 and especially my Italeri A-6E Intruder.
      Vallejo paints and products: I mainly use these, as well as Tamiya, because my LHS has them in stock, and so far these products work very well for me. ;)
      I have about five or six paints from the Vallejo Metal Colors range and I like them for their "depth" and their ease of use (no dilution needed).
      For my gloss coats I currently use Tamiya X-22 diluted with 50% Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. For flat coats I use Vallejo Matt Varnish 70.520 with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner or Tamiya XF-86 with X-20A.
      Hope this helps... Cheers, Oliver/RWO

    The model is very tail heavy. I realized the hard way. I don’t really know what to do now :(

      The build instructions suggest to add 30 grams in the front, and the model really needs that. Is there a way for you to somehow open the front landing gear bay and try to add some weight from there? Or just add some lead weight into the landing gear bay and paint it so it's not too obvious? I had the same problem with my B-25 build which is a notorious tail sitter as well. What I did there was I added a support made from clear plastic sheet in the rear of the model so it stays on its front gear.

    gulf war A10's were never painted camouflage

      They in fact were. Operation Iraqi freedom(03) warthogs were exclusively gray. Desert storm(91) most were if not all were euro camo. I don't believe they went full gray until the mid to late 90s.

      @@tonyroberts4807 The ones that supported me were all grey, even the one who fired a maverick missile at me.

    Negative my friend. You must study in a best way the A-10A ,because you had build an 1st Gulf WAR aircraft.
    Check the right reference.
    1- the GPS antenna was a later introduce after 2000 . This the most big mistake !
    2 - the color of wheel bay was in grey FS 16473 - the Insigna White was introduce with a low viz camo.
    3 - the fuel tank in a center line position is wrong, the carried for the long range transfer ( 2 fuel tank) .
    any way is a nice video
    kind regards

      Appreciate your feedback and corrections, but please, no need to be overly didactic or harsh here. Most mistakes come from the crappy Italeri build instructions. I'm not an expert builder, just trying to capture the "look and feel" of the model and share the FUN of it with you guys. Thanks for watching.
