  • Richard Dumas was a star in high school, won 3 state championships and became a McDonald's all American. Although he could've went to the school of his choice, he chose to attend Oklahoma State, where he was the second leading scorer as a freshman. Also by this time he had a crack addiction that was new to him, but one he'd never shake. The addiction would stay with him throughout his career, and cost him just about every opportunity at the same time. Suspension after suspension between college and the league pushed him out the door when by all accounts, he had the talent to be a great player. He was instrumental in getting the Suns to the finals in 93, where they lost to Michael Jordan and the Bulls. Since a child he's been participating in using substances to alter what was later revealed to be bipolar disorder, anxiety and serious mental illness.
All in all, he still made it to the league and is now doing great things in his community while getting his life together. Salute to him, but here's how he went from NBA Finals To Stealing DVDS! RICHARD DUMAS Stunted Growth Story!

That ‘93 Suns team was special. Out of all the teams that faced the Bulls during the first three peat, they pushed them the hardest. Jordan really had to dig deep. Barkley, KJ, Thunder Dan, Dumas and Ceballos off the bench. Dope squad.

But kidding aside that is to this day one of my favorite teams of all time and maybe the main reason I became an obsessive NBA junkie nerd.
The underrated Mark West and rookie Oliver Miller up front. Barkley, Tom goddamn Chambers, Ceballos, and Dumas at the forwards, Thunder Dan and KJ, AND Danny Ainge coming off another Finals appearance with Portland, not to mention solid veteran backup point Frankie Johnson and a young Negele Knight when it looked like he still had potential.
When I think of most talented teams to never win a title, I put them first and nobody else is even close...except their 95 team with Wesley Person, AC Green, Wayman Tisdale, and Danny Manning added to the mix. If Manning doesn't shred his knee they take the West in a walk . But with only Joe Kleine and Danny Schayes up front may very well have lost to the Magic at the end.

As i've become familiar with your channel which is Amazing btw... i think Richard Dumas is the most stunted growth case that i was personally familiar with while growing up. He was exciting to watch, played with frenetic energy most times he hit the floor & could have been a 5 time allstar & possibly even a h.o.f. if he could have gotten his prob under control. Well based off how well he did when he actually played. Absolute steal of a second round pick.

Folks talk about Lebron's lack of a killer gene when the pivotal game of that series had Pippen bringing the ball up and Kerr (or Paxson...I forget) hitting the game winning three (Jordan watched and trusted his team)…anyway. Dumas helped build that Suns Team. I remember his off-court issues then. I had no idea of the depth of the challenges he had. Respect to the man!

Had family that know him around the neighborhood. I remember a story about him shooting a gun in the air to prove that the police wouldn't show up. He had talent it sucks how life can take such a left turn.
