  • Living Sacrifice originated as a Thrash Metal band in 1990 and released a trilogy of albums that explored the extremity of Thrash and Death Metal and in the process they would go on to influence countless bands as well. If the first album you've ever heard from the band is Reborn. You might be curious to hear what the band was up to before that.

It will always be Conceived in Fire.
But Death Machine will always be my favorite song.

Not the most popular choice but Infinite Order is number 1 for me. So underrated and every song is a banger. 2nd would be Reborn and 3rd Hammering Process

Nonexistent. Inhabit and Conceived in fire comes at a close 2nd and 3rd, respectively

All of them…. My introduction was Reborn … fortunately a buddy of mine hooked me up with their first three albums … I love the DJ trilogy! I like how all three albums brought something different and unique to my ear buds. I saw living sacrifice twice … but my favorite is when they played with Overcome for their Reborn Tour. One of my all time favorite shows!

I've been listening to them since the beginning. It's wild when you hear how many bands today will list living sacrifice as an influence on their style. Very cool

I got to see Living Sacrifice in 1992 in Little Rock, AR (their home town) at a place called Vinos Pizza. Amazing live. I was already into the Crucified etc being from California so it was extra special to see a band like them before the Tooth & Nail thing happened in the mid 90's with "spirit filled hardcore" etc.

It's funny. I was with my friend Mark when we bumped into DJ at Cornerstone 91 and as I recall he told Mark he was working on this vocal style he compared to opening up a furnace and a blast of burning heat coming out (or something like that). When Nonexistemt actually came out, one of the first reviews I saw compared the vocals instead to a tongueless man cougijg up a hairball. All funny comparisons aside, Living Sacrifice were not my first ride on the thrash / death metal bus. But seconds into the first song on the first album, I knew I was in for an epic ride. A buddy of mine showed me a review in a metal magazine that said they can't believe a group of Christians has created a Reign in Blood era Slayerr clone that is actually out slayers Slayer and that he is torn because he wants to recommend the album but he just can't do it because he can't support bands expressing Christian beliefs. That made us laugh. Wish I remembered the magazine but it was his not mine and I don't know anymore.

In 91-92 there was so much great music and bands coming out, especially in the Christian scene. So much so that I don’t remember what all I was listening to when I found their self titled album, and it was good, but got shuffled in the mix. I didn’t have it but a few months maybe when I found what I consider the best album of all time.
    Nonexistent!!!
The heaviest, darkest, melodic masterpiece! To include DJ’s vocals. For me they are what makes this the best album and really enhance the mood overall. Breathy guttural pitched growls that are just perfect for the overall composition.
Musically Inhabit is as good but I was disappointed with the clearer vocals and production. I don’t think that had Nonexistent been recorded in the same way that it would have stood out to have any impact whatsoever on me. Idk.

I have never felt any personal enjoyment in this era of Living Sacrifice. Not a big thrash fan and DJ’a vocals were always a bar I couldn’t clear on the second and third album.
But, for the Christian metal genre at the time, LS was far ahead of their “peers” in terms of heaviness and brutality.

I have not listened to Nonexistent and am so excited now that you compared it to Gorguts in any way, shape or form! I just took my 6 year old son, Elijah, to see Gorguts and Blood Incantation as his first real concert.

    • @dft9000
      @dft9000  Před měsícem

    Total Nostalgia for me.
The Inhabit cassette was my intro in 96 when I was 14 and will always be my favorite.
Imo the first 3 albums are superior to all their albums that followed.
Though I’ve seen them live at least 5 times from 00-02…..
Ah cherished memories from days gone bye…..

I drive a vehicle equipped with a CD/cassette player, though I only listened to CDs for a season, because I no longer had the cassettes of my youth. That is, until ... the CD player stopped working! Instead of investing in a new or fixing the existing CD player, I choose to re-invest in some of those aforementioned cassettes of my youth, specifically, Believer (pictured in this video), The Crucified, Deliverance (also pictured), King's X (who I just saw live last month, Holy Soldier, Mortal and a new one by Impending Doom. Thanks eBay!

You need to check out Monotheist! They're a Christian Technical/Progressive Death Metal band, heavy with some beautiful solos and leads: I recommend the Genesis of Perdition album (link to that here: czcams.com/video/LDLgQylpoW8/video.html), they're a lot like Extol, and a little like Opeth I think.
