    It is funny your heading motioned the Goldwing. One of my coworkers had owned Goldwings in the past and bought a Beemer and said he was going to trade it in on another Goldwing. I told him to look at the ST1300. He went to the Honda dealer and saw one, and said "I'm not buying any crotch rocket" but the salesman told him to take it out on a test ride. He bought it on the spot and loved it. Took it on many long trips and loved the handling, etc. (Only thing is he had to put risers on the handlebars, and complained bout how the heat from between the tank and seat was like "roasting chestnuts on an open fire" if you get my drift.)

    Great review, one of the best bikes I have owned (I had the older 1100), used it for shopping and commuting as well as touring. It does have plenty of power (for 2-up touring with luggage) and handles well but it won't keep up with a sports bike unless the rider is a complete novice. Always check the clutch when buying used because it's a lot of work to replace because of how the engine is set out - do some steep hill starts, do a few quick launches to warm it up, then check the hill starts again - should be completely smooth, no juddering and no slipping.

  • @DavidR8
    @DavidR8 Před rokem +4

    The weave is due to poor weight distribution. The fix is to ensure your rear shock preload adjuster is full. If you do not feel resistance after about two turns from fully out then you need to refill the adjuster.

    • @motardsquid
      @motardsquid  Před rokem

      People keep saying that. But i don't buy it. I've had 40 bikes and none of them exhibited this. No matter how loaded they were they more stable at high speeds. If the st1300 is only stable with cargo evenly then it is a major design flaw.

    • @DavidR8
      @DavidR8 Před rokem +3

      @@motardsquid I’m not saying it is more stable with cargo. What I am saying is that if the bike is loaded and the rear spring preload is not increased to ensure the correct ride height then you will get wobble. Before I refilled my adjuster and increased preload my 2005 was awful at highway speeds. After I refilled the adjuster so that it would actually increase preload the bike was and is still rock solid two-up at much high than legal speeds.

    Im in the process of looking for a sport touring bike, narrowed it down to the Yam fj1300, Kaw Concours14 and Honda St1300. Leaning towards the Kawasaki well because I'm a Kawasaki guy. The FJ1300 is impressive if you want to win the race. The Honda styling just a little off for my taste, but is the better bike in most other ways. I love HP sadly so will probably go with Kawasaki.

      2003 was the only model that had the issue. 2004 onward it was fixed. It was due to the damping system from what I gather. I’ve never had issues unless I’ve had a top-box on and that’s to be expected. Issues >100mph.

      the heat problem can be reduced by trimming the inner plastics beneath the outer fairing. There's nowhere for the heat to escape to. By removing some of the inner plastics either side of the from wheel a lot of the heat is "washed out" with airflow It makes a HUUGE difference

So I budgeted for a packaged suspension upgrade, front shocks and rear main shock and bought it. Then, silly in hindsight, a check of the tire pressure showed about 30 pounds, not the recommended 41. Oops! Anyway, once I get back on the road after extensive maintenance and delays, I hope correct tire pressure will have chased the squirrel away!
