Through the magic of XG, this sounds amazing, but the way which the high pitched instrument is carefully woven into the other tracks is lost in translation to General MIDI, ultimately ruining the entire sound. Put simply, it sounds terrible on any GM hardware you throw it at.
Yeah, even programs that emulate XG effects using soundfonts (eg. VirtualMIDISynth) still get it wrong. (In my case I was using Arachno Soundfont). That's why I have the MIDI Player program lying around on my PC and the S-YXG50 VSTi. (And after all, XG MIDI just sounds better using the stuff it was designed for. Although ngl, some MIDIs do sound neat using VirtualMIDISynth and Arachno Soundfont, maybe not as good as actual Yamaha Software but still kinda neat)
