Vintage lenses can be addicting, and hunting them down is half the fun. I didn't have to look far for the Pentax 50mm/1.7 that sits on my X-E2 right now: I've had it since 1980 when it came on my ME Super. The Super, unfortunately, hasn't worked in 30 years. Maybe I'll get it fixed some day, but can't bring myself to get rid of it, as it was my first. In the meantime, that lens is back to work!
I've got three beautiful vintage lenses I use with my XT2. Pentax 50mm f1.7, Minolta Rokkor 58mm F1.4, and the Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8. I love them all, beautiful colours.
The old (and seemingly forgotten) Fujica ECB lenses perform very well and can be found on older Fujica bodies for fairly cheap. Not to mention it is kind of neat having the Fuji name with the modern camera :)
I just bought:
• 28mm f.2.8
• 50mm f 1.4
• 135mm f3.5
Looking forward to putting them to use this spring!
I haven't tried that one yet, but I highly recommend the Pentacon 50 F 1.8 and Canon FD 50 F1.4. I find that on APSC I like more focal lengths like 28 to 40. 28 F2.8 vintage lenses look good on Fuji bodies and can focus very close to the subject. Thanks for your video
I’ve been using Minolta MD lenses on my Fuji X-E3 since I already had a number of lenses for the Minolta X500 I’ve owned since 1985. The camera and lenses are all still performing perfectly so it is very satisfying to be putting them to further use.
Enjoyed this video! I started adapting older lenses with a Fuji X-E2. I have older Takumar, Nikon, Yashica, Auto Sears, Pentax, lenses of varying focal lengths. I currently have a Fuji X-T5 and have yet to do anything with my vintage lenses but will get out soon and work with them on the X-T5.
Stunning visuals! Brilliant Chris!
I have a set of Olympus lenses 28mm 35mm 50mm and 135mm all great lenses nice colours.......
Yay! I've been waiting for this video! Thanks so much for covering this topic Chris!
The Pentax 50mm is so beautiful. The Minolta MD 50mm f1.4 is also such a beautiful lens too. The Canon FD 70-210mm F4 Macro zoom is a great lens as well, with an IBIS camera it creates some great shots for under £50.
These type of lenses have been my go to lenses over Fuji lenses due to the price difference. Currently rocking a Fuji XC 15-45mm and saving up for the XC 55-200mm (due to prices in South Africa, currently the XC 55-200 is ZAR4000 while the XF version is ZAR11000)
You love the Witterings don't you?👍🏻I bought a Helios m-44 58mm last year. Great fun and soooo easy to use manually with focus peaking, it's a joy!
Absolute banger of a video. Agree 100%, love using vintage glass on my fuji system
Gorgeous shots brother!
Great video Chris. What make of adapter do you use?
Love your enthusiasm Chris. I have a set each of Pentax & Oly: 28, 50, 40-80 Pentax / 35-70 Oly & 135, plus a Helios 44 (58mm). I’m loving using them on my A6500 & Olympus EM5 mk iii. As these have 2 different crop factors I’m getting a choice of focal lengths as well. You’re so right that they slow you down and help composition making.
I’m a big fan of adapting old manual focus lenses to my X-E2s. Since I shoot mainly landscapes, I don’t need an autofocus lens . I have to admit, though, I have a serious case of OGAS (old gear acquisition syndrome). I also shot film and picked up a Minolta X-370 that is in mint condition for a very reasonable price. Who needs new gear when there’s so much great vintage gear out there?
Great work Chris, this looks a lot like the North Norfolk coast. You cannot go wrong with the Pentax Super Takumar lenses, I have the 35mm f3.5 and the 135mm f3.5 love them.
Great video! What adapter do you use for this lens?
I have loads of vintage lenses for my Fuji. I particularly enjoy the Canon FD ones the most. I would encourage grabbing the Canon FD 28, 50, and 70-210. The beer can 70-210 is amazing and fast focusing. And when not using them on my X-E2, they go back to my Canon AE-1 I’ve had since a kid.
I also have a couple of vintage lenses. So far I have two Canon FD lenses, the good old 50mm f1.8 and the 135mm f3.5. I've had the 50mm for a long time along with an AE-1. I bought the 135mm recently in fantastic condition for $35 USD. I also have two lenses from my Ricoh X-RP, a 35-70 and a 70-200. Haven't used them yet though. The FD lenses have been fun so far. Recently, it's been crazy cold in Pennsylvania and I'm definitely not a fan of that. Can't wait for milder weather to get out and shoot more. Have a great week!
If you like 50mm vintage lenses, then you would love the Takumar 50mm f/1.4 (sharp & great bokeh), Helios 44 (magical swirly bokeh), & Industar 50 (wonderful light flares) lenses.
Hi Chris! Great video as always, try some vintage Minolta MD or MC Lenses, also vintage Takumars.
I have the helios 44m 58mm f2 and a Super-Takumar 135mm f3.5. The takumar has such a smooth focus ring.
How about a video of you showing a step by step guide of each stage to how to alter your Fuji camera to use manual focus lenses whether Ttartisan or an old film lens.
I did something similar but didn't dive into showing the menu settings. Might have to do another video on that
@@atwistedlens, that would be really appreciated Drew. I think many are missing out on not using 'manual' lenses simply because they are not absolutely sure what to do to the menu in order to get started. A really simple idiots guide would be most welcome.
Old MF lenses are great on mirrorless, but I would avoid the wider focal lengths as due to the flange distance of SLRs, their optics are compromised. From 40mm on though....
On APSC the 50-55mm standard lenses make great short telephoto's, but I find even better for not much more money are the macro lenses in the same range.
I've picked up a few over the years, from pentax/takumar, these are my favourites: SMC m 50mm f1.7, then SMC Tak 55mm f1.8 as well as the Tak 35mm f3.5... My BEST VALUE EVER lens is the Pentacon 50mm f1.8. Close focus of about 30cm and super dreamy bokeh (it's not sharp wide open but it's got masses of character!) And f4 upwards is very sharp. I got one for £5 - although I did have to clean the blades for that price. A fully working one should be £15-20 on ebay. Superb for the price. I also got an SMC M 135mm f3.5 - another bargain and a fantastic lens - and not huge either.
Absolutely love my Carl Zeiss Jena 35mm 2.4 Flektogon. Such close focussing too
It's a fantastic lens!
So excited to see you do a vintage lens vid!
I've just recently started putting mf lenses on my X-M1.
Current fav: Yashinon-ds 50mm f1.9 (under $30 on eBay)
Most disappointing: nikkor 50mm f1.4 (its terrible wide open)
I also have a Helios 44-2 on the slow boat from Ukraine apparently
I love 50mm lenses on my X-Pro2. When I had an M9, I had 10 different 50mm lenses and each one is unique in its own way. Right now I only have three; the Fuji 50mm f2 R WR, a HandeVision 50mm f2.4, and a TTArtisans 50mm f1.2. The first two are in the hundreds of dollars category, but not the TTArtisans. Also just ordered an Opteka 50mm f2, another dirt cheap Chinese lens, but it got some nice user reviews. You might want to look at the Jupiter 8 and some of the other old Soviet 50mm lenses. You just have to find a good copy.
I have a bunch of old Olympus lenses, that I sometimes use on my fujifilm, lots of fun for landskabe, not so mutch for action pictures, in my opinion.
I have this lens I love it 🥰 the colours it renders are great love vintage glass so much Olympus om lenses are nice Minolta 45 mm also a good one in my opinion
I’ve used a Pentax lens a couple of times with an adapter for Street Photography and I did use a 70-200 Tamron ( for Pentax ) push and pull lens which I wasn’t too keen on for a long landscape shot but that was when I was very new to Fuji and even though I’m still not sure I’ll stick with Fuji I am getting better with it and do enjoy the film simulations, need to add some others though but will have to wait until next month to get yours. Sorry though but if I do join the Patreon it will most likely be for a month only, I’m unable to work and with the way energy prices etc are going, little luxuries like this will have to be put on hold
Hello Chirs congratulations for your channel and these wonderful videos, but I have a doubt, I bought an AX mount URTH adapter to use some old Sony lenses and the adapter ring only takes 8 steps, is it normal?
I have had much fun with vintage lens on mirrorless cameras I use Fujifilm X-T1,X-T10 & X-E1 I have a large collection of Nikon lens dating from the 1960' 70 80 and 90's
I also love Carl Zeiss Jena lens I have Zedra 50mm Pancolar f1.8 a 29mm MC f2.8.
the great. thing is they help digital cameras look like film which is what I started in 1972 as a professional shooting the Lord mayor show for schools filmstrip.
I have really enjoyed our book wonderful photos.
I had this lens on a Pentax k1000 when I was in high school. It was just the basic lens then. ❤I have a Fujifilm X-30 ii coming today with a free third party budget lenses but never thought to try vintage lenses. What kind of adapter would I need to use old Pentax lenses?
In the last two weeks i have added Olympus Pen F 38mm 1.8 superb piece of glass also Pentax smc 50mm 1.4 and the smc 50mm 1.2 and a Hexanon 40mm 1.8 and today came a silver zeiss tessar 50mm 2.8 Love your videos as always..
My favorite is the auto takumar 55mm f2.2 very sharp and a lot of character.
What adapter do you recommend for these vintage gems!? Advice would be much appreciated
I just picked up a fuji xe1 with the intention of using it with vintage lenses. Sofar I've got a pentacon 30mm 3.5, pentacon 50mm 1.8 (definitely recommend this one, especially close focusing) and a Carl Zeiss Jenna DDR 135mm. Imagine that a carl zeiss for £30. Your k&f bag, do you rate it? Looking for a hybrid bag.
Like you love the 50mm range….bought a ttartisan one to go with my cheap second hand x-e1….which I use with various other cheap manual lens….if I fancy something that ‘auto focuses then I pick up my x100s …satisfies my photography needs
I have an x-e1 and x-e3. What adapter(s) would you recommend. I currently have old nikon ai-s and olympus om zuiko manual focus lenses. Thanks for help.
I’ve got the Helios 44-M its so fun!
Pentax Super takumar 135 f3.5 has very similar look to that one! Any takumar lens is good. I also really like Olympus om lenses
I recently picked up a Nikkor 55mm micro lens.
Hi Chris... I'm a bit confused about using vintage lenses with adapter. I've just ordered an k&f adapter from nikon f mount to fuji camera. I've done lots of research and came out with few answers. For instance if we use a nikon f mount 50mm on a fuji camera then it should be equivalent to 75mm however there are people saying if a fullframe 50mm lens using adapter mount into fuji camera will still have the same focal length. Now I'm confused whether the 50mm going to be 75mm full frame equivalent or 50mm. Thanks
I got mine with the urth px to xf adapter and I’m waiting for them
Vintage Pentax lenses never fail to impress me. I have the 50mm 1.4 to use as my portrait type lens. It's dreamy but still sharp enough at 1.4 and by 2.8 it's tack sharp and consistant across the frame. It's simply lovely.
@@kenhosie4533 I love the 135mm as well. And my ME Super and MX of course. I've never had the chance to use the LX but I hope to one of these days.
What make adapter are you using? I have a number of old Pentax lenses that I would like to use
@@stevecox7836 K&F Concept Pk-Fx. It was slightly more expensive than the no brand ones but I'm very happy with it. £21/$25
@@stuartcarden1371 thank you, much appreciated
what converter do you use so you can mount and use the lens?
@Chris Orange ... Have you tried any of the fuji EBC analogue lenses ?
I've purchased a Canon EF to Fuji X adaptor and now use all of my L glass, and a Canon FD to Fuji X adaptor.
Unfortunately the prices of older lenses are on the up because videos like yours and people like Mattias Burling..... but we wouldn't want you to stop making them.
Hey Chris
Is this lens radioactive? I got the 8 element version in the belief that this is not but it seems some of the later ones are. There's no way to tell but to use a geiger.
I am restrain myself from buying an AF lens for my Sony camera because I want to use vintage lenses only. The Pentax-M SMC 28mm f/2.8 is great lens. It is rather sharp and on an APS-C camera it is a roughly a 42mm equivalent which is a pretty useful focal length.
I did a quick video about using vintage lenses on the fuji cameras as well and plan on doing a video about the individual lenses soon. I love my helios44-2 and Canon FD 50mm f1.4. Recently picked up a Zeiss Jena 35mm f2.4 and it is a beautiful lens!
Last year, I purchased for my full frame full spectrum converted camera:
Nikkor-N 24 f/2.8 (almost new, even came in the original box and plastic shell) - for IR
Nikkor 35 f/2 AF-D - for IR
Olympus OM E.Zuiko 24 f/2.8 - for IR
Olympus OM E.Zuiko 100 f/2.8 - for IR
Kuribayashi K.C. Petri Orikkor 105mm f/3.5 - for UV/IR
Kyoei Acall Kuribayashi 35mm f/3.5 - for UV/IR
Now that I have an X-T4 for visible light, I was thinking about getting the Olympus OM E.Zuiko 18 - nope. That is not a budget lens. 🤣
I have a whole bunch of vintage lenses (just 1 Fuji autofocus kit lens). M42 - Vivitar 28mm (2.8), Zeiss 50mm (2.8) & 135mm (3.5). FD - Sigma 24mm (2.8), Canon 35mm (2.8). Pentax K - Chinon 50mm (1.7). I have about another 8 M42, FD & K mount lenses though not sure offhand of the make. One thing you really have to look out for when buying vintage lenses is FUNGUS.
Nice video. 👍👍
What adapter are you using?
Vintage 135mm lenses are particularly brilliant and usually cheap - even the 2.8 versions. No XF lens of mine can match the pop I get from my old Zuiko 135 f3.5, that I paid just 17 quid for in mint unused condition. Hipster inflation has seen prices rise for FD and OM Zuiko lenses but they're still dead cheap. If anyone wants to buy me an old Olympus 21mm f2 lens there are a coupe on Ebay right now - for around £5500 a piece! A more realistic dream lens for me would be the Nikkor 105mm f/1.8. Again, prices have crept up but I've seen them go for £350 quite recently. Even that might seem expensive but it's one of the best lenses ever conceived for XF 27mm f2.8 kind of money. No brainier and a good investment piece too. Lots of fun to be had.
I have the latest style Voightlander 58mm f/1.4 in Nikon mount and it is why I never got the XF 56mm Fuji lens.
Adapted to the X-T class body, it is terrific. One advantage over the Nikon DSLR is that with my Fuji body set to hybrid mechanical/electronic shutter, I can shoot at f/1.4 in bright light and get av very nice rendering and background blur.
I also adapt my 90mm Elmarit Leica M lens which has allowed me to forgo the XF 90mm, which may be better, but would be a low use lens for me, thus unjustifiable.
Hi, where can I find an adapter to connect the 58mm Voigtlaender to the FujiX System ?
@@thomasfries3393 The Voightlander is a Nikon (D)SLR mount lens. so you only need a Nikon to Fuji adapter. I bought mine from Amazon for under 20 Dollars.
If you search, you'll find many. It is simply a passive tube that holds the lens out to the distance of the non-existent flipping mirror which is not needed on the Fuji.
Be sure to go into your menu and set the camera to fire WITHOUT lens, since the camera does not recognize that you have anything attached to camera. You can also add the focal length in the menu so that it shows up in the data in the photo... but the aperture will be blank since again, the camera is not talking to the lens.
@@albertsmith9315 Thank you Albert !
I'd love to know what you make of the Helios 44 lenses. Weird bokeh and lens flare, so not everyone's cup of tea....
How do you attach a vintage lens from a different manufacturer to a Fujifilm camera?
You have to buy an adapter. I got mine from Amazon. Just search Amazon for your camera and the lens you want to attach, and a product will appear.
@@ChrisOrange Thank you! Love your videos!!
I searched many places , even in CZcams, still confused without any outcome . I have Sony 6400. I want to try /buy vintage lenses. Any leads ? Suggestions
Any vintage lens will work, and they can be found just about anywhere, from ebay to thrift stores to yard sales. An adapter will be required, which is a simple metal cylinder with one end that accepts the lens, and the other end has a mount that matches the camera, in your case the Sony E-mount. Adapters for the E-mount are available for just about any common vintage lens mount. You really can't go wrong starting with a Pentax/Takumar (either the M42 mount or the K-mount), the Canon (FD mount), Olympus (OM mount), Konica, and others which are plentiful.
Need adapter for lens?
Yes but they’re readily available for mirrorless and dummy adapters are cheap.
Nice move! Though let me tell you, these vintage Pentax lenses are a very slippery slope... I started off with a couple of sub-£100 bargains, and a year later I'd spent 10 fold! 🤭 Still, I'm not saying I'm unhappy or anything ;)
I have a Pentax Super takumar 50mm f1.4 and 35mm f3.5 that I got for free.
First.
Get the Pentax K 28mm 3.5. Not the m version and not the m42 version. It is untouchable.
