Hello there and welcome to the Sounds American Halloween special!
Halloween is one of the biggest holidays in the US.
Modern Halloween goes back to ancient Celtic harvest festivals when farmers tried to protect their crops from all kinds of trouble including - wait for it - evil spirits!
They warded off ghosts by dressing up in scary costumes, lighting bonfires, and carrying lanterns carved from turnips.
Yes, you heard that right. They made Jack-o'-lanterns from turnips as there were no pumpkins in Europe back then. It was only much later that immigrants to North America discovered that pumpkins were larger and easier to carve. That's how carved pumpkins became a symbol of Halloween.
The Sounds American team can help you scare off ghosts without having to carve a pumpkin (You can still wear a costume if you like).
This is how we'll do it.

Hi there! thank you for this video likewise! can't wait for seeing your stuff in the APP. Please let us know when you are lounging your sound american app. thank you.
+Mohammad Faisal, you're welcome! We're working hard on our app to make the release happen as soon as possible. 🖖
Your channel is the best one for advanced learners that I've seen so far, could you please add the description of the words in the video? Sadly, some of the words are rather unknown to me.
+Alex Alex
Thank you! We know that some of the words we provide may be unfamiliar. However, we're almost sure that we'd better not include definitions and there are multiple reasons for that.
1) Practically every word has more than one meaning. Even if we offer one or two key definitions in our videos, it still won’t be enough as we obviously cannot provide all of them.
2) If we decide to do it, we'll need to use a very basic English vocabulary to avoid other unfamiliar words, and this can be a dead loop 😊. Even then, there is no guarantee that our explanations will be helpful.
3) In our videos, we typically use words from a list of 3,000 most frequent English words. We believe that about 90% of them should be familiar for students with an intermediate level of English. While trying to compensate for the remaining 10%, we may overload our videos with lots of extra information and therefore distract our viewers from their primary goal - learning pronunciation.
4) And speaking about pronunciation, the idea of this channel is to teach you guys to pronounce almost any word, even if you aren’t quite sure what this word means.
So, we decided we'd rather be one of the best pronunciation channels than one of the worst channels on vocabulary.
However, just in case you want to learn the words from our practice sections, we always include the full list in the video descriptions. You can print them out if needed.
Thank you for your feedback, btw, it's great.🖖👋
You're totally the best channel on how to pronounce stuff in English, and there's even more to that, I totally love your design and your visuals, none of the other channels pay attention to those details, that makes you channel to stand out even more, and if a particular thing is aesthetically pleasing, our brain automatically pays much more attention to it (e.g. beautiful men and women obviously get much more attention than those whose looks are rather mediocre), and people learn faster.
+Alex Alex Thank you! We're very particular about our designs and animations, glad to hear it helps our subscribers to learn faster! 😊👋

You can start by pronouncing Halloween correctly. The root word is "hallow", based on All Hallow's Eve. You kept pronouncing it Hollow-ween, which is incorrect.
