Thrips can be very destructive if not kept in checked in a greenhouse. It was either the thrips or our crop. That's pretty much farming unfortunately.

I’m really glad you posted this. I’ve been dealing with these. I have Orthene. What helped you make the decision to use Orthene? I’m just curious since I never know which active ingredient to select
Will you retreat? Are you going to replace potting media? I guess I’m curious if you are going to try and eradicate or just spray and manage the population for the spring?

Orthene has systemic properties so it gets all the thrips no matter where they hide. Thrips often migrate to the back side of the leaves, so sprays that kill on contact don't get those. But when you use a systemic, the chemicals go inside of the plant and kill any insects that are actively feeding. The Orthene will take care of everything that is there now. Thrips will start to infect greenhouses when the days warm up and the vent fans kick on drawing them in. After a lifetime of greenhouse work, spraying is just a part of the job.

@@AgTeacherThoughts So do the plants absorb the orthene through the leaves or does it need to be applied as a foliar spray? Will you do multiple applications or rotate with anything else?

Before spraying make sure that the plants are well watered and ONLY spray on a cloudy day. You want the stomata to be open. That well help the plant absorb the spray. Use the soluable powder, as the liquid has an oil base that can burn off blooms. I will probably only spray twice. Once now, once 3 -4 weeks before the sale. I won't need to rotate. I don't keep any plants in the greenhouse in the off season. So the local thrips won't gain an immunity to the spray.
