  • A few things to consider before you buy a circuit breaker. Many consumers assume they can just go buy a breaker like buying produce, but not all breakers are the same.
    Massive Electric exists to help consumers understand electrical work, why electricians cost what they do, and to help young guys in the trade learn how to think about troubleshooting.

    I'm sure you know this even though you stated otherwise, but breakers wear out and can start tripping well below their stated amperage, so sometimes when a breaker keeps tripping it is the breaker that's the problem. Appreciated the rest of the video, didn't know there was so much variety between makes/models.

    Bravo for posting this video since it brings attention to much maligned perception. Just a couple of fun facts. Breakers do wear out ! How ? In many states it is required to mount the load center " outside " of the building for easy access. Humidity up, humidity down, salty air & direct sunlight will affect operation. Also in many commercial operations the breaker is used as a " switch ", for lighting. Generally a no no. Use a solenoid or relay system to operate the lighting on or off. In general terms, replace outdoor mounted breakers 20 - 25 years. Indoors slightly longer. I use my " breakers " to seasonally switch my baseboard heating. Cheers.

    Simply put an amp probe on the load wire. If load is within tolerance look at the brand, amperage and type and go shopping.

    My fridge and small ac keep cycling on and off. I suspect they are on the same 20amp breaker. I tested the air-conditioning unit in another room, no problems. The breaker does not trip. But, when the AC cycles on the lights dim and sometimes flickers.

    Problem is home owner #1 'matches it up' to something that fits and home owner #2 comes along and looks at the model number. Before long you have a panel full of incorrect breakers that happen to fit. Home owner #3 comes along and ends up with problems. Been there and done that.

      @MassiveElectric  Před 7 lety +2

      +Dewayne Fanchier perhaps, and I'll recommend safety precautions for non electricians when applicable, but who uses PPE inside residential panels? I don't know one electrician who does. I appreciate your input though, I'll keep it in mind for future videos as it definitely sets the right example. Thanks for watching.

    • @dewaynefanchier589
      @dewaynefanchier589 Před 7 lety

      I guess that's the problem... Very few people use the proper PPE in residential. NFPA 70E doesn't exclude residential. Trust me, I know it's difficult if you've been in the craft for a long time! Back in the day I have been in an energized 480V control panel wearing a T-shirt & shorts while troubleshooting......... It's actually a little ironic since I teach 70E...... :-)

    • @MassiveElectric
      @MassiveElectric  Před 7 lety +1

    You also might be changing a circuit breaker because the line is going to a different device. Let's say you have a 30 amp breaker for a water heater but you are routing that line to a baseboard heater drawing 6 amps. The 30 amp breaker may not protect the 6 amp heater.

    @Massive Electric I installed a 30 amp circuit in my garage so I could run my mig welder from there. I bought a new 2 pole 30 amp breaker from lowes, but it doesn't fit the box well. The connections where the breaker slides onto the busbars is loose. The busbars are thin, the old breakers in the box have steel inserts in them to create a tight fit, but the new breakers don't have that insert. Can the inserts be purchased or is that something that was phased out. It's an old box btw.

    Hello, if I have 2 double pole breakers where there are and they have 2 switches each. SO, say you have 1 thru 4 switches but, switch one and 4 are both 20 amp and switch 2 and 3 are 20 amps. This is for an electric dryer . If the Dryer is turned off completely, should there be am amp draw on any of the legs going into this breaker?

    • @MassiveElectric
      @MassiveElectric  Před 6 lety

      I assume you are referring to what is known as a quad breaker - it's two thin two pole breakers side by side in one breaker. Normally two pole breakers like this are used in dedicated circuits which is a circuit that goes from a breaker directly and only to one device or outlet, which is probably what you have on both sides of this breaker. Normally, if a device or appliance is turned off then there will be no current draw on that circuit. I assume by asking, this is not the case you are experiencing? Sometimes just because it's turned off there can be some current being used: particularly if there is a clock or other internal electronics. In these cases the amount of electricity will be VERY small. If you are seeing a significant amount of electricity being used, it's possible that it is not a dedicated circuit and something else is on the circuit.

      My suspicion is the manipulation of my electricity via the means of a smart meter. I have lived in the same 1100 sq ft townhouse for 18 years. When comparing the weather from dec 2016 to dec 2017 I found it to be quite the same. The difference is that that are charging me for 3753 KW when I have never gone over even 2000 kw. I think that the electric company is forcing power usage through my meter.

    My house was built in 1954 and still has the original 70 amp six space panel. I think the 70 amp might be sufficient, but I would like to replace the single breakers with the double or twin breakers to create twelve circuits. Is this safe? The panel only has a neutral bus bar. No ground bus bar, and I'll need to increase the neutral bus bar to 12 spots.Is it OK to add a ground bus bar and double the size of the neutral bus bar?

    • @MassiveElectric
      @MassiveElectric  Před 6 lety +1

      +Mike Miller that's a great question yes you can do that but there is a very high possibility of overloading the service but there are a lot of variables. Back before we grounded, any grounds that were added to a panel without a ground bar, the ground conductors were added to the neutral bar. If you're not going to replace the entire panel, which you should consider first, you can add a ground bar and thereby also a ground rod, to the panel for proper grounding of any new circuits. While you can do this I'd be more curious as to what you're going to add as far as circuits and what the circuits are going to be for. Technically when you add a circuit you're adding more load to the main but like I say there's there are some variables here. This is a great question for me to discuss on my Snapchat tomorrow and I may make a video kind of detailing some other variables to answer you properly. Thanks for watching and thanks for asking.

    • @mikemiller5827
      @mikemiller5827 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for answering. Although I have my cabinet shop in the garage there won't be any more power usage than there has been for years. We have two breakers that trip fairly often. The entire kitchen is on one circuit which also has two plugs in the living room and two from an upstairs bedroom on it! The other that trips is for the garage. Another breaker is for the other three bedrooms and one bathroom. So I just want to split up the existing load on to more circuits.

    if i have a 100 amp main how many total amps can i safely install. whats the rule of thumb how many breakers\amps i can add to a panel

    • @MassiveElectric
      @MassiveElectric  Před 6 lety

      There's really no number of breakers rule, the max will be how many breakers fit in the panel. However, short of having an engineer do some load calculations, use the 80% rule for max amperage. In other words, don't allow more than 80 amps to be pulled from a 100 amp panel.
