OVER / UNDER EXPERIMENT:
Some of the most powerful lightning events can propagate horizontally for 10s of kilometers and connect to the ground with a massive surge of electricity. We call these horizontally extensive ground flashes.
Seeing these big daddies blossom underneath storm clouds is a jaw dropping sight but, underneath the storm, you’re still only seeing half the show. If a lightning strike is powerful enough, it can flip the charge at the top of thunderstorms initiating another spectacular light show high above the storm.
Red sprites belong to a group of mysterious large scale electrical discharges called Transient Luminous Events, or TLEs. In order to see the spectacular parent lightning discharges in all their glory and the TLEs they initiate above the storm, we’re going to need to be in two places at one time.
In this video, I team up with storm chaser Paul Smith to simultaneously document the most powerful lightning strikes and the magnificent TLEs they parent in what we call the Over / Under Experiment.
Negative ground flashes are the most common manifestation of cloud-to-ground lightning. But these generally don’t transfer enough charge to spark a TLE. For this experiment to be successful, I’m going to have to locate a rain free vicinity of the storm were the horizontally extensive positive ground flashes are occurring while Paul Smith finds cloud free skies and clear views over the tops of the same distant thunderstorm complex.

I've been watching you for years hank and I just wanted to say that you're one of the most talented people I've ever seen. You're such a legend. Much love.
Agreed! My son loves watching these videos and he learns so much from them. I have used a few for homeschool lessons 😊 Thanks for keeping it kid friendly!
@@lolzz457 that's amazing! It's incredible how he can actually educate people as well as keeping it extremely interesting at the same time!
bouncing sprites off the dome
This is facts.
gosh, your videos need to be about 2 hours longer each time, I can never get enough hearing the things you teach- congrats on the 1 million, u deserve many more :D
>THIS
OK 👌🏿
This almost brought me to tears - the majesty, beauty, awe, power, and wonder in what you two managed to capture here is TRULY breathtaking. Hank, simply put, you've more than outdone yourself with this project. A heartfelt congrats to you and Paul for capturing this, and presenting it to us! I made my family drop what they were doing just to watch this show. Amazing. Simply amazing.
I really appreciate you writing this Tom. Comments like this really keep me inspired. Happy New Year!
I second what Tom said! My family loves your videos as well and it doesn’t matter what it is. It could be weather or traveling. Honestly you’re what we love the most. You’re an absolute legend my friend.
I think he is one of the guys who first discovers something, never a human documented before :0 He clearly makes history and we can watch it for free here :0 This is amazing!
Absolutely stunning to see both sides at the same time, thank you for once again putting together an amazing experience!
Ayyy a fellow Unus Annus and Pecos Hank fan!
Awesome man, Paul Smith is the red sprite man! When I started lightning photography in 2008, i made it my bucket list shot, knowing no one had ever captured it properly. Then in 2016 I shot some awesome lightning storms in Philippines, didn’t notice them until Paul pointed it out. Now he captures them like no one ever before, he’s totally got it figured out. Huge respect, to both of you!
Teaming up with a buddy to film storms from different angles like this must be so interesting and fun. Great idea and amazing footage.
Wena Hank algún día voy a ir a cazar tormentas a USA, espero encontrarte por ahí jsjjaj
Always a good day when Hank uploads! Love your content, and congrats on a million subscribers. You've earned it!
His quality is the meaning of perfection
It was you and your previous captures of these TLE Sprites that made me first aware of such a phenomenon and your description back then explained it well in its entirety, but to see the effects in a real-time comparison is something really quite unique and hits home the process taking place. Absolutely beautiful and educational (with your personality to polish). Kudos to Paul for the team effort too.
That spark of excitement when the +CGs and Sprites fire is difficult to understand unless you've experienced it yourself, never gets old. Great video as always man.
Appreciate it as always dude. Gonna be a great year for us.
i have trauma relating to thunderstorms, but i just cant get enough of your videos hank. listening to you explain everything and watching your footage is oddly soothing. congrats on one million subs!!
Sounds like you're on your way to desensitizing that trauma Glitch. Cheers!
@@PecosHank and it's all thanks to you and your videos hank :)
Lightning is absolutely my favorite thing when it comes to storms. Thanks for this video!
When Paul mentioned he hoped he wouldn't get bugged by the cops, I can still imagine an officer on patrol rolling up to check on things and have Paul show him (possibly) his first sprites ever seen.
So excited to watch you get back out there this spring and chase them storms! Happy 2023 Y’all!
Love you hank!! you inspired me to pursue meteorology as my major, big respect to you my friend
Yesss! I love it when my favorite CZcamsrs post :D
Lightning is AMAZING! immersive experience every time i see en’ great vid hank! cant wait for the tornadoes if 2022 vid too! ❤❤
Clicked on this the second it popped. Love the videos man!
🌩️ Thanks for a great start to 2023! ⚡😎✌🏼
First video of 2023. Good to see another upload from ya, Hank. Happy New Year everyone 🎉
I always called horizontally extensive ground flashes, “sky splitters” and live for the opportunity to see them. They’re one of life’s greatest visual thrills and they never fail to stop my heart with wonder. I first heard about sprites a few years ago and have been fascinated with them and blue jets ever since. Fantastic videos as always, Hank! 💗⚡️
I am honestly astonished by what you have uploaded so far to this channel over the years Hank, you are by far one of the best content creators within meteorology. Thanks for providing educational resource and compiling this wonderful experience.
this video genuinely had me in awe, fantastic camera work from the both of you! those shots of the anvil crawler lightning creeping across the night sky were truly spectacular, i'm proud to say i've been following your channel since the el reno twister of 2013 and hope to see more amazing content from you in the future
We're coming up on our 10 year anniversary. Cheers Fox!
You inspire me! Can’t wait for tornadoes of 2022!!!
Got recommended, clicked instantly. Hyped to see what light-shows you have for us today! :D
Oooooh new video! Love to see the content and the beautiful views!
Lovely video. Since I was a child I was so fascinated by the glimpse of a flash in the sky. This man has been through all! From fascinating tornadoes to enormous supercells. Helping animals and exploring in the tropics for me is one of the most heartwarming channel! Keep it up Pecos we love you man 🎇
The lightning is returning yet again to make us amazed.
Love u hank have a good 2023 and happy chasing later on in the year also happy 1 mill subs
Finally a new video from you. I really love your videos hank. Greetings from germany ✌🏼
Nice to see you back with with Paul back look at sprites and lighting. It's so incredible that you guys discovered green ghosts! Can't wait to see your list of last years tornados!
I Love your Videos keep IT Up 👍♥️
First! I love watching new Pecos hank videos. You are my role model
I remember thanks to you I sat outside one summer night in the grass waiting to see a TLE and I did... Felt so amazing and exciting
Love your channel buddy❤
Happy New Year!!
I love positive strikes so much. The thunder is unbelievable!
Hank, this is one fascinating video.
The way that you and your colleague were able to "line up" video footage to pin down what was happening above as well as below the storm is particularly fascinating; your work here reminds me of your video where you worked out the speed of one of the Pilger tornadoes by mapping its motion using videos of the same tornado from several different chasers
Hey man, been watching your videos for the better part of a decade now (which makes me feel damn old). I'm currently a student at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, and I've always DREAMED of seeing if there were some way to invite you out to give a presentation of some sort. If that's of any interest to you, let me know and perhaps I could talk to some of the higher-ups to see if we can make something happen.
Thanks again for your miraculous cinematography and clever narration. Keep up the good work!
Awesome experiment! Can't wait to hear what kinds of insights you find after analyzing the data. As always great video Hank.
Dude, I LOVE your content on TLEs and lightning. Tornadoes are *always* interesting but there’s something about a vast electrical explosion that connects the ground to the edge of the atmosphere. TLEs are truly cutting edge and never anything other than completely fascinating
Hey man I love the videos you do. It makes my day!
Love you Hank, good job on 1M subs
youre probably my favorite youtuber
I love your videos so much! been a fan of you and your music for a while now. so glad to see you posting again!
This is amazing and beautiful, I've been watching you since 2017 and I've never seen a disappointing video ever. Thank you for making these amazing videos!
super cool!
Lets hope that Paul and you continue to discover more details about this topic
HES BACK!!!
Our day instantly gets 100x better as soon as we see u have uploaded ❤️
This will be jointly my favourite lightning video. Can't mistake your beautiful music surrounding the Anvil Crawler lightning and that phenomenon!
Now we're jointly observing sprites at two polar opposites!
Thank you!
Without a doubt one of the best content providers out there.. anyone can see how much passion and knowledge are in each and every one of his videos👍🏼
I always look forward to and rewatch many of your videos ♥, nice work as always! Hope you're staying safe out there Hank
So glad you're here, love your videos! Just wanted to say thank you for the years of amazing content!
It's such an obvious experiment to make. But actually going through with the huge effort to do it, coordinate it and produce a video about it for us to see is just something else. Chapeau and thank you so much for that.
I got into hanks videos two years before COVID started and his videos would make me want to watch storms so much with the lighting off in the distance on a cricket filled summer night
When I see that he’s posted a new video
It just reminds me of the time just before COVID when everything was normal
No new wars
No chaos and panic
New terrible things happening everyday
I miss it
Great video, cool to see the same events from multiple perspectives. As always your editing style & music choices are really fitting as well, the audio of the intro really sets the mood.
Cool
Nice
congrats one million subscribers hank! never fails to entertain :)
Love this! Happy NEW YEAR! Peace and Good Fortune and Good Health to you and your family. All the best!
Hey, Hank, nice to hear from you again! It's always a pleasure to see more of that "real lightning" you get down there in the Southland. I gotta tellya, if we ever saw red sprites like that up here in the Northeast, well, we might think that's the end of the world up here! That was so awesome! I would think it to be a truly cosmic event if I ever saw the red sprites for real. Here's to a very intense Storm Chasing Season for you in 2023! Happy Trails!
Our cameras a very light sensitive, so the sprites appear much brighter than they actually are. But you can still see them. Happy Trails Shaun!
The teamwork involved in creating this video and the detailed explaining of what is going on is worthy of any movie/tv award.Your video productions just keep getting better and better!
Hanks videos are the only time I immediately tap on a CZcams notification! Awesome footage! Hope that jogger was friendly.
Hank, thanks to you I've found my burning passion for weather! Im almost done with high school and didn't know what i wanted to do in the future for a long time. I've decided to seek a career in atmospheric science! I adore your videos, and I'm so excited to see where this channel goes in the future :)
I was so happy to see a new video from you! Thank you for this, it's beautiful. 😍😍
You’re freaking amazing dude. Not only capturing the awe and beauty of storms, but contributing to and furthering meaningful scientific data and research. Bravo
I can't get enough of Pecos Hank's videos. They are always so educational as well as spectacular.
Fantastic idea, this over/under thing. You can always count on Hank to think outside the box. Spectacular content! Cheers.
YEA THE WEATHER KING IS BACK!! 👑
Fascinating!!!! Thanks so much for what you do. 1 million!!!whoohoo!!!🙌🏽
Congrats! Thanks for the vids a lot since years and that one wow!
OMG that camera work is CRAZY exciting!! Thank you both for the experience shared through your lenses. Beautiful to observe and then to be able to capture it, then show it slowed in duality, just WOW!!
Thanks for the year man i wish you the best for the next year
Happy trails
This is my absolute favorite content on CZcams.
I feel like knowing the TLE happens when the bolt makes contact with the ground is huge. I wonder if they could be energy coming from/being reflected by the ground. It would be interesting to know how much time passes between ground contact and the TLE.
excellent as always. interesting to see the direct connection. youre a legend hank, keep up the good work!
Your video drops are always a special event, gotta first get myself a drink and switch to landscape orientation before watching. I always love the "atmosphere" created by the combinatin of images, narration, editing, natural soundscape and music choices. Keep it up dude!
Well done, as usual. Love your work!
So beautiful! Thanks for the great and very interesting videos.
Congrats on 1mil and thank you for the many years of beautiful, awe inspiring footage. May there be many more 🍻
Love your videos

How fantastic is that! Thanks hank, I hope you’re well friend.
Lightning is such a fascinating thing, and very cool to look at. I'm very glad I've been watching your channel for a few years, the tornadoes, the lightning, it's all so amazing!

Fantastic video Hank. Love the work you do .
You are definitely one of the most interesting persons I have ever seen. Love all your stuff. Please never stop.
I found Hank through this channel and watching his storm chases, but I've recently decided to check out some of his music and I really like it so far! Good job having more than one trick Hank.
HAAAANK! You're back!!!
I really needed this today.
