  • Will I decided to go ahead and run my NOS 1958 10hp. I didn't buy it to save it or resell for more money 10 years later. Really I was drying to see how a band new one would run, don't get to see that everyday. I replaced coils, spark wires and gas line going to the carb. I didn't go anything to the carb. I haven't replace the water pump yet but looks like it pumping good water for being 59 years old. I was very surprised how well it pumped, will replace it. I would of never guested it would start on the 2nd pull. I ran it for about 10min after I was done videoing, no water in gear oil yet. Compression was 85lbs on both cylinders Next it replace water pump and give a boat ride.
    PS. I was running it on a 16to1 oil mix

    What a beauty!!! That's VERY cool. That's what a new one sounded like back in 1958! I'll give you your couple hundred bucks for it any day of the week and twice on Sunday Scott!! Great to hear it run. Thanks for sharing that with us.

    This is astonishing to me. Not that the Johnson works like new, they were the bulletproof engines. It is so amazing that you can still get a brand new '58 Johnson!

    You really should do a compression test on this motor! I'm very curious what numbers it will show. You'll never get the chance again to do such a test on such a new engine. Great motor by the way, absolutely love it :)

    We’ve have the same outboard, not as nice thought. We had to replace the coils because it would die when hot, now it runs sweet

      I'd have paid you $2500, cracked coils, brittle wires and all..but then you 'fixed it up' and started it. NOS stuff if one of a kind. Now it's just a really awesome condition USED liked so many others..!! Too bad..

      1958 10hp and up were 24 to 1 from factory. FYI the 10hp and up are rolling bearing motors

    I saw this some time ago, and recently watched it again. Did you ever test the compression on it before you sold it, and if so what was it on a new motor?

    I know that sound. I recall when dad bought a NOS 1957 7 1/2 in 1958. That new sound came right back to me and still can smell the two stroke. So how do I change over from my old two line fuel tank to a one line?

    I've a question if you don't mind, I have a '58 Sea King that runs well but finding a replacement propeller is a bear. Would you have any insight insofar as cross referencing a modern one, preferably a 3 blade, to replace it with? Any help at all would be appreciated.

    Where did this turn up? Was it in an original packing crate? Maybe a floor model from a dealer who opened his doors that particular year and he never sold it?

      Well it was on eBay for off and on for over 2 years. But here's the thing he listed just as a antique motor. He didn't say the word outboard, or Johnson or the year or OMC. So it didn't come up in a search a person would use when looking for a old outboard motor. So after about 2 years He was welling to come down to a price I would pay. It came from the state of Maine. He said it was a display motor when the dealer ship went out of bus. He got it from a guy who got all the display motors when the dealer ship closed. The other guy still has 3 more NOS Johnson that he won't part with yet..Damm

  • @russg1801
    @russg1801 Před 5 lety

    BTW, what fuel / oil ratio are you running that on? You DO know it has full needle bearings and will run 50:1 with TC-W3 oil, right? Yeah, I'm sure you started it with 24:1 for break-in but in normal service I'd go 50:1. I have the same motor, VG condition not a cherry. Mechanically OMC didn't change much right into the early 70's on these 18's.
