  • In this video I make a copy of a Velázquez's Lady with a Fan, 1638. This painting in the Wallace Collection in London has been a favorite of mine and here I try to learn more about it by doing a master copy over the course of a few days. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you enjoyed this video and would like to see more art videos like this in the future.

Materials: oil colors, nylon and sable brushes, walnut oil, fast drying medium, canvas panel
Book: Velázquez by Maurizio Marini. Electa publisher
More information from the Wallace Collection's site:
As court painter to King Philip IV of Spain, Diego Velázquez created consummate portraits of the Spanish royal family and the high nobility. The Lady with a Fan is one of his most famous and enigmatic portraits. Long believed to represent a Spanish lady, recent studies have suggested that the sitter may have been French and not Spanish. The only Frenchwoman known to have been painted by Velázquez was the Duchess of Chevreuse, intimate friend of the Spanish-born Queen of France, Anne of Austria. Her political conspiring brought her the enmity of the powerful Cardinal Richelieu and, in 1637, forced her to escape to Spain. In the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth is another portrait of the same woman, probably slightly younger, in a much more modest pose and clearly Spanish dress.

How skillfully you put the expression in the eyes in place. My hands shiver whenever I paint eyes.
I loved the attention to minute details and blending of colours to produce the reflected light without compromising on the expression on the face. Marvellous!

While I would not call this a poor copy of the original, I think it should be clear to everyone that Velasquez is so incredibly capable that no one can approach his "felt" technique. This is exactly why the word "ineffable" exists. In the end, the best painting is about expressing the inner genius, insights, nuances and emotions of the original artist. This is why the cream always rises to the top. It cannot be simulated.

This ainting example of this master-work is so incredible. I am color-blind in the problem areas of red/green, so, I have relate my colors to my knowledge of the grey-scales. I have tried to identify the suble changes in the face, depending on where the lights are, but I have so much left to learn. Thank you, this demonstration is helpful, but the dialog along with it would be helpful. I am attempting to paint an oil portrait of my 4 year old granddaughter, but it isn't going very well. I wish there could be a way of sending an image of my painting so I could receive some valuable help. Thank you for this incredible lesson,

I think it's a very good study copy. Although I don't know if you're trying to reproduce Velazquez's technique. If so, you shouldn't paint "physically" all the colours you see in the painting. Many of the tones you see are only optical colours, the result of the mastery with which Velazquez superimposed and worked the layers of paint.

I strongly disagree with "coloring in" with a very small brush like this. Surely that is antithetical to how the Masters painted. --- and--- who paints with gloves on?????

@@verydrunkcat Cuts on hands?? Look, if you are that afraid of working with pigments that have been used for thousands of years, then just don't use them! In my view, many current "artists" are trying too hard to have it both ways. They want to pretend to be artists in the time-honored traditions, but they are careful to wear plastic gloves all the while. It's all just so silly. I am not impressed with ANY such artists, by the way. Just look at the final outcome: their paintings!

@@KpxUrz5745 I did not see technique in this copy, only coloring. The only merit was mixing the colors before. But it is too far from being a master copy, it could be a copy, but you can never imitate Velazquez's technique, you can never imitate his brushstroke. This can only be called a studio, but to say that it is a master copy is too pretentious. Titian's Adam and Eve is an impressive work and Rubens himself made a study and master copy of that painting, and that is really a master copy.
